cbs's catherine herridge on what's being done to limit the damage. >> reporter: tonight pentagon officials are scrambling to identify the source of leaked documents apparently meant for senior decision makers like the joint chiefs. pages seen drawn from secret military briefing books, including cia updates. not even the white house can say if the crisis is contained. >> we don't know. we truly don't know. >> obviously, you know, this is very detrimental. >> reporter: republican congressman mike turner, chairman of the house intelligence committee, was briefed earlier today. >> we don't know what else might be coming or what else they have access to. that's why it's so important to tsurorhe firstime since tocuments were identified on a popular gaming platform, the pentagon is acknowledging the stakes. >> in some cases, it contains sensitive and highly classified material. >> reporter: with a spring offensive approaching, the documents apparently revealing ukraine's reported need for new munitions, so acute its air defense could crumble, and indications a former intel official says the u.s.

catherine herridge explains. >> reporter: defense secretary austin acknowledged the leaked documents were exposed on the web potentially for weeks. >> where exactly and who had access at that point we don't know. we simply don't know at this point. >> reporter: the probe being led by fbi investigators is making progress. austin drilled down on key dates. >> the documents that we are aware of are dated the 28th of february, 1st of march. i don't know if there are other documents that are -- have been on line before. >> reporter: as the investigation accelerates, two officials tell cbs news it does not appear to be a cyber leak but rather a physical theft of highly classified material. before the leak, sources say about 1,000 people or more potentially had access. it has since been scaled back. >> well, the fbi and pentagon investigators narrow the universe of suspects. >> it's actually easier the higher the level of classification -- >> reporter: robert anderson who worked counterintelligence and espionage at the fbi told cbs news highly classified material is also highly restricted,

cbs news senior investigative correspondent catherine herridge joins us now with what she has learnedtherine. >> reporter: good evening, norah. court documents allege the 21-year-old gamer and air national guardsman actually searched his own government computer for the word "leak" apparently concerned investigators may have identified the source. as the charges were read in a boston court room, 21-year-old jack teixeira stood silently. arrested thursday by heavily armed federal agents outside his mother's massachusetts home, teixeira now charged under the espionage act. federal investigators accused him of posting dozens of images bearing top-secret markings to discord, an online gaming platform. >> people who sign agreements to be able to receive classified documents acknowledge the importance to the national security of not disclosing those documents. and we intend to send that message. >> reporter: according to the criminal complaint, teixeira did cyberdefense operations in the air national guard and required a top secret security clearance that gave him access to some of the gover
