i'm catherine kobayashi. a strong and large typhoon is impacted western japan and could make landfall as early as tuesday. we now go to the weather desk for the latest information. >> that's right. this is definitely a major typhoon that we do need to watch out for. let's start off with a look at the scenes from this morning. things are getting already pretty stormy. this will be in the shikoku area. you can see waves impacted the coastline. strong gusts already hitting 140 kilometers per hour. heavy rains falling in the past 24 hours. and highest amounts almost hitting 600 millimeters. we are going to see a lot more rainfall over today as well. so big concern here. it's going to be turning very stormy. this forecast path taking towards the north a little more over the course of today. then it veers out quickly and heads toward the east. but this is going to be a slow-moving system. a wide area is going to be impacted. and we are going to continue to see that stormy weather over the next couple of days. of co

i'm catherine kobayashi. typhoon ma-on made landfall in western japan and continues to batter the region with strong winds and heavy rain. we go to saki ochi for the latest information. >> once again today we are going to be talking about a lot of stormy weather impacting japan, and let's start with a look at some of the most recent footage of the storm system impacting southern sections of japan. this will be along the coastline in wakayama prefecture. still very high waves being seen and rivers, too are overflowing. there have been reports of flooded homes, over 2,500 people have had to evacuate, injuries, too, have been widespread nearly 50 people reportedly injured from these storm systems, as those very strong, damaging winds have been causing quite a bit of destruction, and today, typhoon ma-on is still just about in the same area, the defining characteristic has been that slow speed at 15 kilometers per hour, considerable slower, usually 40 kilometers per hour so moves away at a much faster pace, not t

i'm catherine kobayashi. at the fukushima daiichi plant secondses for covers that contain radioactive materials released from the damaged reactors have begun arriving at the site. the covers will be installed at the number one, three and four reactors. buildings housing these reactors sustained severe damage from hydrogen blasts triggered by the march 11th earthquake and tsunami. pillars, beams and other parts are being pre-assembled at a port 50 kilometers away from the plant. the concrete basis of the structure will be delivered wednesday with more sections arriving in mid-july. the operator of the plant, tokyo electric power company says it hopes to complete assembly work by late september using a crane with a 140-meter long arm. reducing radiation released from the reactor buildings is crucial to getting the crisis under control. this month, tepco will estimate the current amount of radiation released from the reactors, the figures will be used as a reference to gauge the effectiveness of the covers when
