general, the american director of the center for democracy at the state of ford university, catherine stonerys that the initial program was too small, and the new summer program, although shorter, will allow more ukrainians to complete a course of study at the university of california, circumstances have obviously changed in ukraine this year with the renewal of the russian invasion, but before that, the donors of the program were concerned that it was expensive and not as effective as it could be, and i think we all share that concern, and that's why stanford made this decision, the idea that our faculty came up with was to combine it with a really successful dragon hills summer scholarship program. so we could bring more ukrainians to stanford for a shorter period of time and it would not result in them having to leave their current jobs in ukraine and i would say that despite all the successes of the initial program, the leader's disadvantage is that it was so small that we could bring only three fellows a year, the full-scale war with russia affected every aspect of life in ukraine and f
