catholic church. i am excited to be moderating our second panel on culture and religious life where we will talk about the similarities and differences between late 19th and early 20th century and the migration happening today in regards to -- the last panel focused on legislation and policy. now we will be focusing on the experience of catholics and the catholic church at the grassroots as different waves of immigrants came into the united states. how did catholic churches deal with successive waves of immigrants? how did that present challenges and opportunities? we have three wonderful panelists talking about that. our first is a professor of religious studies here. he is also a fellow at i.p.r. he received his phd in 1983 and has been on the faculty for 32 years. his recent interests include a variety of topics, religion in america, religious movements fundamentalism and religion ecology. he has published many articles on these topics. he also has a long-standing interest in catholic traditionalis

catholics took care of catholics. jew would take care of jews. they would not discriminate against other groups, but there was a focus on your own groups. denominational ties were still strong. with the integration of catholics in the post-world war ii world, you have a decreased in the feeling of being threatened from the external enemies, such as protestant groups and so on. when you have this decline in sort of the threat level catholics become more comfortable in american culture. that d credits -- that decreased remove some of the institutional threat. you have the emergence of the cold war and a lot of the issues that emerge with that. you have that it can, engaging the world in a way that the -- you have vatican two engaging the world in a way that it had not been. there was this kind of social mission approach, i think, to migration policy. as an aside these approaches to migration policy can be applied to a much grider -- much greater range of issues. immigration, health care, so on and so forth. we can leave that aside for now. it is a

among new catholics. in fact, i remember when i was at the office of ministries at the bishops conference, we had this immigrant finally from vietnam arrive. -- family from vietnam arrive. as they unpacked everything, over 50% of the luggage they brought was a devotional stuff. bibles, statues of mary, rosaries worried over 50%. what does that mean? he means that devotions and religious value is very strong among them. and they want to keep that. they want to maintain that. they want that to be a part of who they are. because they don't have a vietnamese church, or african church nigerian church hispanic church, sometimes when they are together, there is a clash of devotions. and that is something that one needs to be aware of. let's take for example devotions to marry. -- mary. it is the same blessed mother. but we have our lady of anti-blue, our lady of waterloo bay -- guadalupe, and so on. if we are in the same church, and if it is not well handled it becomes whose mary takes center stage? finally, i w

the focus is the fact you are a catholic lay catholic evangelist. we will break that down and talk about what that means. let's talk about your dad. tell us about your dad. >> dad broke in to the nfl in 11952, a walk on kind of undrafted free agent in 1952. se set a record -- he set a record. he was traded to the chicago cardinals from 1953-1959 and from 60 to 66 played for the detroit lions, went in to the nfl hall of fame in 1974, name was dick night train lane. >> that father of yours, has raised a wonderful son, we got a beautiful picture of you guys. >> taken in 1993. i'm sorry, 1994, 20th anniversary of his induction at the hall of fame. >> i hear you get to go back there. >> my brother and i get a chance to go to the hall of fame every year, and it's just a wonderful, wonderful time of being able to celebrate dad's legacy. >> the neat thing is, you go back not just as a child of someone in that legacy, but also as a preacher. people now know you as the preacher. >> yes. >> tell us about the john madden story. >> so i'm out here in oakland, ca

like him better than catholics? i said maybe it's because he reminds some people of jesus. >> your first book was a biographer of st. francis. i was wondering what does he think of pope francis? >> the question is what would he think about pope francis? well, he would love him. what's not to love? the thing is although he had some bad views, especially on jews, he was a date great democrat. he said democracy is like blowing your nose. you may not do it very well but you have to do it yourself. [laughter] i think he would recognize the democratic goal of st. francis who wants to be with the people. he says get out of your rectory's. one of the things that came up in the jesuit orders is he took some people who he felt were endangered but many jesuits thought he didn't support them enough but then he became archbishop and he would take the bishop he take the bus and he would say i want the priest to get out there. he said i admire the priests because he knew the name of every dog in the slum. >> you began by saying ca

if you do not call the right doctrines you cannot be a catholic so since the pope is a catholic though some are beginning to hesitate about that he must hold all the right doctrines. the only thing he can changes the tone. rather than tone i would prefer to talk about changing the culture of religion. the ethos of believing as a matter not only of the head of the heart. as he told his jesuit interviewers the structural organizational reforms are secondary. the first reform must be an attitude. france's signals a culture change in everything he does in what he calls himself, where he lives, what he wears and even what he writes in. .. >> >> so there were various observances and conventual ones. so that was the thing that surprised me. second, where he lives. the fact he is not living in the papal palace has been discussed of austerity. but that is now when he emphasizes he said i cannot live alone and must live life with others. there really say they need others. with those entry rituals traumatized the self-sufficiency. that it is not like you or me by frances takes all types of measur

there's parts of the town that catholics don't go into.re's protestant people just don't come into catholic areas. it's the most saddest place. >> pelley: that sadness, and anger, rose again last year when, based on the boston college tapes, adams was taken in for questioning in the jean mcconville case. catholics wanted to see him free. protestants wanted to see him hang. was your arrest a dangerous moment for the peace? >> adams: i think so. to be quite honest, i was sick sore and tired of a tsunami of stories based upon these tapes linking me to mrs. mcconville's death. so i contacted the police and said, "look, you want to talk to me, i'm here to talk." >> pelley: he was held for four days with the boston college tapes played back to him. they asked you if you were part of the decision to kill jean mcconville. >> adams: they said that i was a senior member of the i.r.a. at managerial level, so i'm bound to have known. >> pelley: and you told them what? >> adams: i told them i didn't. >> pelley: the disappearance of jean mcconville was

against catholics. much for joining us san francisco's archbishop is at the center of a big bay area battle. more than 100 local leaders signed this open letter urging pope francis to replace him. it was signed by a group of catholics opposed to the archbishop's views. leann melendez joins us with the story. leann? >> cheryl, well you know this group is very clear for the past three months, they have quietly and discretely asked all their contacts here in the san francisco bay area and at the vatican to intervene on their behalf. they have sent letters, they have made phone calls and yet nothing. the full page ad would have included a lot more signatures, but those behind it say they needed space for the actual message. asking the vatican to remove san francisco's archbishop. >> so our hope is that the pope recognizes both from our messages and this, that we are serious. >> those behind this letter say they are catholics from different backgrounds who oppose the policies. for example, the archbishop wan

baptist or white only catholics. the church might have a restroom but it cannot say that this is a white only restaurant. i'm sorry, this is a white only drinking fountain. the one for people for colors down the road. bob jones university had a policy failure of abandoned by the time it was a -- they no longer a democrat and abandoning a policy. that banned interracial dating or just a lot of banned interracial dating that college campuses could not have such a policy. this is the worst act of 19 safety for the banned discrimination on the basis of race. the irs came to bob jones university and so change a policy. no, it's based on a biblical beliefs. they went to the united states supreme court and the lost that case and, therefore, they lost their tax-exempt status. a facility in new jersey, a methodist association lost its property tax exemption over this. this will have a wide reaching ramifications. whether and when it will reach the point of what a pastor can say, i don't know. we do know, however, that the bel

the ambassador diocese said this ad does not speak for the expire catholic community. some want him to stay as archbishop. you can not change that stuff. >> we have conservative catholics and of course to some degree they are going to defend what they think is important. >> those would signed the ad say the archbishop is mean spirited and fosters an atmosphere of intolerance. for example, he is asking teachers at catholic schools to sign a morality clause this calls things like homosexuality evil. these have triggered profits throughout the city over the past couple of months. >>> thank you. police are investigating an officer involved shooting that injured a woman driving a stolen car. it happened year on 105th east oakland neighborhood. the officer who fired the shots was a san leandro police officer investigating burglaries outside his city limit when the police say he spot add stolen car and tried to pull it over. the officer said the woman ram his car with hers so he opened fire on her. she was hit but she is expected to survive. police detained her male passenger

it's signed by over 100 catholics here in the city. some are ceos.hers retired battalion chief, retired football coach, teachers, professors. so again, more than 100 people. they're saying, i'm quoting, that the archbishop has fostered an atmosphere of division and intolerance. they're specifically upset with the morality clause that teachers and staff at the four catholic high schools here in the city must abide by. the letter goes on to say that goes against those people's personal beliefs and that it is not right that they have to abide by that morality clause under the threat of being fired. they also argue that it violates a state law. so again, they're calling on the pope to remove the archbishop. the diocese has responded by saying that this is just a small group of catholics. they do not represent the wider view of the entire catholic community here in the city. the people behind this letter will be holding a news conference later this morning to discuss this further. reporting live here in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> in

charlie: there is also this notion that -- about dogma as a non-catholic.hat do you have to do to change dogma? garry: that is a good question. often, you don't. it just falls out of use. when you look at things like interdicts, indulgences, bans on usury, all those things -- there was never any renunciation. it was just the people of god just started living in a different way. when people want him to change the teaching on contraception for instance, he knows the catholics overwhelmingly practice contraception. they pay no attention to what the bishops say. the bishops only said it because under the last two popes, a litmus test for advancing your career was that you would never question the teaching on contraception, abortion, married priests, women priests. you needed to have a clean bill on those. they were looking up towards rome. they were not paying any attention to what was going on in the pews. the pope, when he was asked about contraception, praised paul xi and said he was teaching against neo-malthusianism and against european colonialism of the

the aclu said because the government has paid catholic groups $73 million to care for the kids catholics than just provide food and shelter. they need to provide contraception, and abortion which the catholics don't believe in. the aclu claims a third of the unaccompanied minors are young girls and most were sexually assaulted. there is no evidence so back that up. but the aclu is suing to force the government to turn over records related to catholic groups' reproductive health care saying quote, the catholic bishops are imposing their beliefs on this vulnerable population who they say are who they are supposed to serve. that raises serious concerns under the separation of church and state. but the bishops have responded. listen. >> it violates our religious freedom because we don't think it's morally correct. but in the broader context of the american public the american public doesn't necessarily support this. as the polls show they don't want their taxpayer money going to abortion. >> right now, the aclu is only suing for documents. further legal action would depend on what the doumgs
