cathy, you were there on 9/11. what do you remember of that day? >> well, i always -- i'm always big on a setting. we had an incredible several weeks. first of all, the one few blessings of the horrific day, we had beautiful weather. and ultimately, both in new york and in washington. that helped the relief workers and emergency workers. at least it wasn't horrible weather, but we had had a string of events. we had our first state dinner. president and mrs. bush for the president of mexico was september 5th, vicente fox, and, again, we had beautiful weather. the dinner went flawlessly. i think the bushes were happy. it was a beautiful occasion, and then on 9/11 we had our next big event for the administration, as far as entertaining and we had scheduled the annual congressional barbecue. very often it could be in june or september. we picked september for a new administration which gave us more time, and that's a big deal, you know, as bess will say going back to lbj and before to have the u.s. congress to the white house in a casual setting, very

[applause] [inaudible conversations] >> i'm glad you are here to hear about the story of the trenton six. my book is about six african-american men who were rounded up, tried, convicted and sentenced to be electrocuted for the murder of a white man. this was all done more or less within the law by police and prosecutors who followed proper procedure and who knew that the men were innocent. i'm going to very briefly tell you some facts of the case because i want to spend most of my time reading little bits from the book. on january 27th, 1948, a white man, william horner, who was a secondhand store dealer in downtown trenton, new jersey, was murdered. seen leaving this crime were two light-skinned african-americans. six men were ultimately arrested. they had no way to fight back, no knowledge of their rights. the sister of one was determined to to find justice for the men. she found the civil rights congress when no one else would help. the civil rights congress was an arm of the commu

many of you may know cathy as a longtime activist from san francisco. her father's grandfather was a police officer. jack did not own his own car until after he retired. his family believed in the importance of public transportation. he was a third-generation city employee. he was a public library in for 35 years. until he retired in 1992. he believed strongly in providing professional service to his patrons and saw public service as a privilege and a calling. he was among the first iteration of librarians to fight for recognition that required graduate training when it was still considered a lesser job. he was extremely proud of having grown up in the richmond district. he was a product of parochial school in, jack and his wife said all three of their children to the san francisco unified school district. they were proud to put their first child on her first day of kindergarten on the first buses to go across town as part of the great experiment for the racial integration and equal opportunity of san francisco schools. a 43-year resident, he was a volu
