comparing data from 2016 to 2018, the cato institute shows that denials of visas to potential immigrants have increased since trump took office by more than 37%. in 2018, 150,000 more immigrants were refused visas than in 2016. so while the president wants to focus our attention on the dramatic rise of border apprehensions reaching 467,000 people last year, more than 620,000 were denied immigrant visas. today, the backlog in visa applications stands at over 4 million worldwide. and for mexicans alone, it is 1.3 million. the wait time for most mexicans, therefore, is well over 20 years. so when people talk about immigrants getting in line and waiting their turn, they need to recognize that for some groups, this line is absurdly long. asylum approvals have also been declining in recent years from 43% to 30% between 2016 and 2018. and the absolute numbers of people being granted asylum have been dropping as well. in short, there has been a concerted effort to shut down legal immigration channels at the same time as the militarized border attempts to crack down on unauthorized entry. consula
