cbs chelsea edwards is there this morning. chelsea, what is the latest? we learned overnight the valley fire has turned deadly. state fire officials confirm that one person has been killed. although right now, they are not providing details on how that person died. you can see the devastation is widespread in middletown. i'm standing at a former apartment complex that is completely in ruins and the smoke is still smoldering and still coming up from some of the rubble here and charred cars were left in the parking lot after this fire. the fire broke out on saturday. it erupted in size and swallowing up at least 78 square miles in less than 48 hours. very quick moving. we are told the lake fire has destroyed at least 400 homes and possibly as many as 1,000 and it also prompted an entire town of 3,000 people to evacuate. the flames spreading so fast and leaving the residents to leave to a chaotic scene. >> you could see the flames creeping up. i think the wind changed direction and sent it toward middletown and i feel very bad for all of those people there.
