when kyle and i went to the cdc, we were there to be a bridge between the cdc and washington and reallyovide them with political support that hadn't quite existed there before. and to support the incredibly important work that the public health experts there do on a daily basis and it truly was an honor and privilege of a lifetime to work alongside them. throughout the course of the summer and during our time there, we did see more and more often individuals across the administration commenting and on the guidance the cdc was trying to put out. unfortunately that often led to delays in this cases and in that particular instance with the president tweeting out, it led to us having to go back and make changes and do additional guidance in order to provide the right information and more information really to the american people. but really what was so critical during that time and what was needed was cdc to be able to get information out quickly to the american people so they can make the best decisions for themselves and their loved ones. . and it's our hope that moving forward, they're g

right now as we speak, the cdc advisory committee, one committee at the cdc, is holding a meeting on whether to recommend the use of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine. a final vote is expected within the next few hours. and final announcement could come from the cdc shortly after that. now all of this comes just a day after the fda gave the green light for an emergency use authorization of that same pfizer vaccine and now one "operation warp speed" official said the vaccine will be delivered to 145 sites all across the states on monday. and another 425 sites on tuesday. it could not come at a more dire time. the united states seeing its worst day of the pandemic thus far. on friday, the highest number of deaths, over 3,300. hospitalizations and new cases also higher than any day prior. the u.s. now approaching another horrific milestone closing in on 300,000 americans killed by the disease. and as we wait for the vaccine's arrival, hospitals are struggling. the department of health and human services saying that 85% of hospitals across the country have more covid-19 patients last week than t

one saying, quote, damage has been done to the cdc that will take years to undo. among those interfering in the agency were kellyanne conway and ivanka trump sending their ideas about once in a century pandemic management. this wasn't just a couple of political hacks mouthing off in emails, no. this was a concerted, coordinated strategy from donald trump down. at the most preeminent health agency in the world or at least it used to be until he broke ith the simple truth of the last nine months sounds extreme. it sounds almost hysterical when you say it. but it is what it is. here it is. donald trump and our government under his leadership explicitlyu pursued a strategy to spread the virus, to get more people sick. they took the side of covid. they had the same aims as the virus. they were as i said before objectively pro covid and they are to this day and not because they were incompetent even though they are. but because they actively, affirmatively chose that path. because through a combination of idiocy and cynicism they thought that path aligning with the viru

in addition to reported cases cdc uses several other systems to track the pandemic, which are compiled in the weekly surveillance summary called covid view. this weekly report includes the percent positivity of molecular tests for sars-cov-2, the virus that causes covid-19, shown in blue, as well as syndromic surveillance for covid-19 like illness among ambulatory patients shown in red. both of these leading indicators have been increasing since september. also included in covidview are weekly hospitalization rates shown in gray which are currently at the highest point since the beginning of the pandemic. and also the percent of deaths due to covid-19, influenza, or pneumonia based on death certificates shown in green, both of which are lagging indicators that have been increasing since october. one component of the weekly covidview report is an assessment of covid-19 hospitalizations through covid net. covid net conducts hospitalization surveillance in 14 states, representing about 10% of the u.s. population. patients must be a resident of the surveillance area and have a positive sar

what is it about the cdc you don't like so much? they took it away from the cdc.he health and human services department, which had no experience tracking that kind of complex and fast-moving data. well, today science magazine did a deep dive look at hhs's covid hospitalization data, such as it is. they compared it to state by state data and other federal databases. basically to check to see if this crucial data collection the trump administration wrestled away from cdc now reflects an accurate picture of covthe covi hospitalization crisis on the ground. the bottom line of what they found is we shouldn't necessarily think of the data from hhs on covid hospitalizations as, like, science-based tool to track the availability of beds in the u.s. instead we should think of this data as garbage, a random jumbled collection of numbers that doesn't reflect reality at all at a time when it would be really good to have good data on this in particular. the headline at science magazine is a little bit more polite than i'm being. their headline is this. federal system for track
