now this sets up a cdc advisory panel to vote today. an acceptance by the cdc would allow the vaccinations to start as early as monday. >> the timing could not be more critical. more than 3300 new deaths due to covid-19 were reported in the u.s. on friday. more than 108,000 people in hospitals right now across the country and the u.s. has added more than 231,000 new cases yesterday. all of these statistics are records. let's bring in cnn health reporter jaclyn howard now to walk us through the vaccine news. jaclyn, good morning to you. first off, explain what happens next. now that the fda has issued its emergency use authorization, how soon will we start to see people getting that needle in their arms? >> reporter: yeah. well, we could see shots administered within days, but this is a process. yes, the authorization news is big news, but the story does not end here. there are some additional steps. here's what those additional steps are. while we heard from the fda, we're going to hear from another public health agency next beings and t

she's previously served on the cdc advisory panel that we talked about that is meeting today. your expertise is so important right now. on the meeting that will be happening today, what are you expecting to come from -- look, it is now a highly anticipated cdc advisory board meeting today. everyone is waiting to see what could come out. what do you think will? >> so good morning, kate. and good to be with you. i think that today we will be hearing clearly from the cdc what the prioritization is. what their recommendations are for priority groups to receive covid-19 vaccines. as we've all heard we hope that eventually everyone will get vaccinated but initially there won't be enough vaccine for everybody. so it's important for us to think through and be clear and transparent about how we prioritize and move through our population offering vaccines. >> absolutely. we also just heard from the head of operation warp speed saying clearly that, as you well know, the need far outpaces the initial supply of the vaccine, even amongst the high risk group, the priority group that we've be

cdc's vaccine advisers also have recommended who should get those first doses here in the united states. cnn's sara murray live in washington this morning. so fill us in more on this recommendation from that advisory panel at the cdc. >> yeah, so, look, this is going to be a huge logistical challenge ahead. here's what we know. we know that the cdc has recommended that health care workers be at the front of the line, and we know that it could be as soon as december 15th, pending fda authorization, that these start to get shipped out. they go out within 24 hours from pfizer. and it's really up to states to get them into the arms of these front line health care workers. we know that even in this first initial round, there aren't going to be enough doses, even to do all of these front line health care workers. states have already thought about, how do you prioritize within those priority groups? for instance, if you're a health care worker that's working every day with covid-19 patients, you are probably going to be at the front of that line. the federal government has taken this 10,000 foot management view on this. they're talking to states about what they might need. you know, do you have enough cold sto
