joining me now is cecile richards, a texas native.our reaction when this happened. >> i mean, this is a tragic day for women not only in texas but across the country because the news is just the tip of the iceberg. once this kind of law is allowed to go into effect and really overnight 7 million women of childbearing age just lost a right they've had for almost 50 years, this is going to embolden the opponents of safe and legal abortion, and we're going to see more of tis. the stories coming out of health centers today, i've been talking to folks down there, are really heart breaking. women who show up and found out they'd lost their legal rights overnight. and i think the thing, anderson, that is really so upsetting is that it's not that abortion will not exist in texas. it's just that legal and safe abortion won't exist. and of course when roe was decided so many years ago it was in large part because young, healthy women were dying in emergency rooms from botched abortions around the country. and i fear for the health and well-bein

cecile, i want to start with you, ask you what your thoughts on the planned parenthood suit that gotunction to at least temporarily stall the texas law from going into effect. >> well, i mean, it will maybe be helpful for a few days. as you know, everyone does, the extreme right in texas is everywhere, asking people to file suit against doctors, against clinicians, against anyone who has helped any woman try to get access to a safe and legal abortion. what we're also seeing, jonathan, is that this has created a political firestorm all across the country because, of course, people are realizing if republicans can do this in texas, they can do it anywhere. and we're seeing, again, efforts in ohio, in florida. texas is the second largest state in the country, and 7 million women of child bearing age just lost the right to make their own decisions about pregnancy. i think the political repercussions for this are going to be enormous. the last thing i would say is it's really important to understand, texans don't support this. people in this country don't support this. and it is finally n

the way that you're going to get around this, people like cecile richards who i've spoken to about thisoment just on the issue of abortion, democrats still aren't there yet. in the 2020 election it ranked bottom of the list of concerns for biden voters and three or four on the list for trump voters. so democrats will have to work hard to mobilize their base. they're trying to. they're looking at 2022 senate races in nevada and say we're going to take the texas law to the people and try to issue -- elevate the issue of abortion but it never has been up until now. it's such a motivating issue for republican voters. if democrats want to stop this happening in texas and other states and beyond, they're going to have to make this more of a voting issue, which is something that cecile richards is well aware of. >> i hate to put everything on the one party that's not trying to destroy our democracy and deprive women of reproductive freedoms, but katty has a point. this joins all the other sacred things they're trying to protect, voting rights and the covid package and other priorities. i wonde

i mean, cecile richards said on this program that roe vs. wade was overturned in texas.you've been focused on the mississippi case for a long time. are we at a moment where roe vs. wade will be overturned in multiple states? >> so, i'm older than the rest of you in the sense that i remember a time when roe wasn't the law in this country, and remember the momentous impact that rio coming down from the supreme court had on women in america to the point that almost take that for granted and that's is issue here. we have this national supreme court standard, this constitutional right to personal decision making where reproductive health is concerned that's enshrined in the constitution because of roe and the cases that followed it. and the supreme court now has the moment approaching, probably first opportunity in dobbs, the mississippi case, where it could say, as a nationwide matter, that there is no longer a constitutional right to abortion or perhaps more likely restrict that right so severely that it ceases to exist. and that's the biggest, the most omnipresent risk tha

cecille passed a protection with threats to roe v.ut not going to get a vote or survive in the senate. if it comes to a point where roe is overturned, what are the avenues pelosi and congress have given the divide in the senate? >> well, it was great to see that bill pass the house, although i will note not a single republican voted basically to support the right of people to safe and legal abortion. that's how far the republican party has gone and, as you say, this whole not public hearing in the senate. what it means, of course, is that we're in a state by state fight and in the state of texas, i would argue that roe doesn't even exist any more. overnight women that lost access to safe and legal abortion, the isis not just something that happened by chance. this was the republican governor and the republican legislature putting their own political ambitions ahead of the women. it has created total chaos for women, particularly women in rural texas, young women, women who can't drive 250 miles to get to another state to access what i

wade, which is what cecile richards, who ran planned parenthood for a very long time, says this law does, this newly reconfigured 6-3 supreme court as a willing participant in efforts to reverse wade, and what happened in texas is really very interesting, from a legal perspective, if you walk out the emotion of the issue. these statutes had been beaten back repeatedly because any statute that imposed a ban on abortion was perceived by the courts as violating roe and so it would get blocked at this preliminary stage, as soon as, really, as it was passed and opponents could get into court to challenge it. the courts would say, this statute violates roe. so, we're going to block it from going into effect while litigation is ongoing. and in texas, they decided they wanted to try to get past that ban and come up with a strategy that would permit the law to move forward. now, look, nicole, there was nothing that forced the supreme court to throw up its hands the way it did and diter when they were presented with this private enforcement mechanism. the court could have certainly seen through it
