abc's cecilia vega has been digging into these new numbers. cecilia. >> reporter: yes, diane, los angeles is one of those cities. drivers here could be paying as much as $4.70 a gallon in just a matter of months. sadly, they're not alone. if you were driving, the predictions would make you slam on your brakes. just in time for memorial day weekend, the highest average gas prices this country has ever seen. >> for now, the calm before the storm. >> reporter: prices that already seemed sky high are about to get even higher. one estimate has an average gas price of $4.05 a gallon by may. another predicts $4.15. that means by year's end, american households with two cars could be shelling out as much as $300 more for gas than they did last year. >> i can't afford the prices. with everything else going up. grocery store's going up. rents are going up. >> reporter: that's the magical figure that makes you go, okay, drive less.

we sent abc's cecilia vega in search of some answers. good evening, cecilia. >> reporter: well, diane, this is hitting drivers squarely in their wallets. and it's hitting earlier than usual. drivers here at this station in los angeles are paying more than $5 a gallon for premium gas. normally, we don't see gas prices spike till may or june, just before drivers hit the road for their summer vacations. >> about 75 or 80. >> 50 bucks doesn't even fill the tank. >> you spend more getting to work than you do getting paid. >> reporter: what a way to celebrate presidents' day with the highest gas prices ever seen this time of year. they're rising at record speed too, up 25 cents from just a month ago. last year, prices mostly held steady from january to february. clocking in at $3.14. the year before that, they actually went down. by april, experts say, it will only get worse. >> we're looking at perhaps prices getting to $3.75 to $4.25 perhaps by april or may. >> reporter: the spike is being driven largely by smoldering tensions with iran and
