good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: amy, good morning to you. the fire chief calls this one of the most rapidly moving, dangerous fires he has seen in his 50-year career as a firefighter. and just take a look at this. you can see why. up and down the streets out here, devastation. overnight, even more southern california hillsides up in flames. this latest fire, forcing several communities to be evacuated, as flames race through the san gabriel motains. fires encroaching on roads, lea lea leaving hollowed-out devastation. now, spanning 21-square miles. >> i feel terrible. >> reporter: firefighters battling fierce winds and parched hillsides, east of los angeles, until the sun came up. now, on day three, the blaze still only 20% contained. it's pushing flames both east and west, causing what's known as a wind tunnel. this has been the real challenge for these firefighters out here. they put one blaze out and another one popped right back up because of these winds, making it almost impossible to put out. at least 500 homes threatened. 26 homes des

abc's cecilia vega tells us about the race to keep radioactive material from reaching our shores. >> reporter: it is a staggering revelation, nearly 72,000 gallons of radioactive water a day are pouring out of the fukushima power plant and into the sea. we know countless items of debris have made their way from japan to u.s. shores, but is radioactive contamination reaching america, too? the canary in the coal mines say scientists is the blue fin tuna, served up in super markets and restaurants here. it begins its journey in the waters off japan's coast racing all the way to america's west coast. stanford university researchers say they have found trace amounts of radioactive contamination in the tuna they tested, tuna caught here, contamination from fukushima. before you stop buying tuna, scientists say don't worry. the amount of contamination found is so low there is no danger in the fish we eat. >> consumers should education themselves as best as possible. we try to put the levels we found in the context of safety standards and in those con tekts, these levels are extremely low. >
