let's go to cecilia vega as the pope emerges. what are you sensing? as he walked outside, there was applause from the crowd out here. as you hear this chanting in the background there's a real haunting sense about it in this square right now, a sense that this crowd is about to embark on a very spiritual event, a ceremony from the highest order of the catholic church. i want to talk a little about something i'm extremely struck by as we watch the pope emerge from st. peter's basilica. one week ago today at this very hour, he was in that church for the start of the conclave mass. i was in there covering it and there were throngs of people, people who waited hours and hours of outside to get a glimpse of all of these cardinals. this is the cardinal from argentina when he walked in a week ago. i wondered when i watched him walk through st. peter's square right now. what is going through his mind as pope. the contrast is so striking, a cardinal from argentina who lived the most modest life who give up opulence of a palatial apartment instead for a small o

cage at the time it happened and authorities are trying to figure out why this morning and abc's cecilia vega has the very latest from los angeles. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: amy, good morning. boy, what really happened inside that park remains a mystery. something caused this lion to snap and turn on this intern. her family tells me she was so new to the job she wasn't even supposed to be inside the cage. this morning a team of investigators is trying to figure out what made the lion turn on dianna hanson in this wild animal mark near fresno wednesday. >> the lion has been taken care of. >> reporter: police say the attack began around 12:30. the 24-year-old ink tern who had just two months on the job at cat haven was inside an enclosure with this 4-year-old african lion named couscous. another park worker frantically tried to distract the cat as it mauled hanson but nothing worked. less than 30 minutes after hanson had entered the cage sheriff's deputies arrive add and began firing hoping to reach her, it was too late. >> the lion was shot and killed per our safety protocols. >> rep

special mass seen by hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people in attendance including our cecilia vega covering it for us in st. peter's square. good morning to you. what a day. >> reporter: josh, good morning. boy, what a day. and what a glorious day it is really here in the vatican. beautiful weather for these pilgrims gathered in st. peter's square. this crowd began showing up at dawn for this inaugural mass and to catch a glimpse of pope francis. pope francis emerged this morning, thrilling a crowd of hundreds of thousands of faithful gathered in st. peter's square. for nearly half an hour riding in an open-air popemobile, he toured the square stopping several times along the way reaching out to pilgrims from around the world. kissing babies, giving thumbs up to well-wishers, even climbing out of his jeep to lay hands on and bless a severely disabled man. the buzz in this crowd is overwhelming as he came out in that jeep, the crowd went wild. you can see the shots of the pope waving. clearly this is a pope, pope francis, who is loved by the people less than a week into his papacy.
