. >> let's head right over to meteorologist cecily tynan who is timing out the system tonight. cecily. >> hi, rick and double scan live showing the system is beginning to push some light rain into parts of our viewing area. the actual center of the storm is over west virginia and the latest computer models are trending it farther down to the south. the focus of the heaviest rain is even shifting a little bit farther down to the south right now. so, we do have a flash flood watch in effect now through saturday afternoon but only for the counties south of the pennsylvania turnpike and i actually wouldn't be surprised if the national weather service lifted it a little bit early since it looks like the heaviest rain will be pulling out tomorrow morning. so, these are the changes since yesterday. delaware, south jersey really the focus of the hardest hit rain. some areas, same areas got the heavy rain last weekend unfortunately getting it again. that means south jersey and delaware, there likely will be some widespread flash flooding overnight. we're looking at rainfall there about t

meteorologist cecily tynan is live in the "action news" big board and cecily you're promising a good weekend. when do we make that transition? >> we will start to as we head through the overnight hours. what's happening, there's a cold front that's pressing to the south. this is the same system that's sparked the tornado warning for berks county. the stormy weather north and west last night. now it's across south jersey and delaware. this the past 15 minutes we've had close to 900 lightning strikes and folks at the jersey shore with dogs, the dogs have been upset all evening 'cause we've had a lot of vicious thunder and lightning. zooming in you can see the heaviest part of the storm has shifted off into the ocean picking up some rotation there. could be a water spout trying to storm. that's a fish storm though. that continues to push to the east. we still have some heavy rain beginning to move towards dennisville. as we go wider there's pockets of heavy rain. the severe weather has moved out. we can flip this over and show you how much rain has fallen this afternoon and we're lookin

cecily tynan is live at the philadelphia zoo where it's certainly hot. hey cecily. >> hi guys it's certainly very hot and that is why we are focusing on reptiles and animals that handle the heat. this is kenya the sand boa, found in northern and eastern africa. i want to hold up her head. what makes these guys interesting if you see the shape of the head it's wedged shape and shaped like a shovel and they use the head to burrow under the sand and then to catch their meals they just stay under the sand and sometimes here is the tail, they kind of poke up the tail through the sand and animals think that is something to eat and they will ambush the prey and they can conserve their energy and let the food come to them. the females can also be double the size as the males and these are a snake that gives back to live young. you think about snakes actually hatching eggs but the eggs are held internally and hatch inside of the body and then the babies come out alive. an interesting animal and people that are afraid of snakes it's none venomous and not slimery at

we have a flash flood watch in philadelphia and the surrounding area, lets get the latest from cecily tynan. >> reporter: the morning showers evolved in a steadier rain this afternoon and double scan live radar showing pickets of heavy rain west of philadelphia. it's going to be a while before we can completely dry out the atmosphere. and we are seeing the potential for a lot of rain in a short period of time. the national weather service posted an insurance watch for philadelphia and all the counties surrounding i-95 until 6:00 tomorrow morning. that means the potential for localized flooding we have been seeing flash flooding this is where the warning continues for the next hour and a half in southern newcastle county, middletown townsend, delaware, these areas are seeing a tremendous amount of rain. this shows the radar estimates, how much rain middletown 3.5 and middletown, delaware closing in on the a half foot of rain. between route 1 and 301. this flips over with the current radar pockets of heavy rain generally south of philadelphia and you see how it's pivoting to the northwest cro

let's look ahead with meteorologist cecily tynan at the "action news" big board. cecily. >> and jim, after that rainy morning with some of that rain heavy enough to cause that flooding across the lehigh valley we're getting a break in the action but double scan live showing stormy weather out to the west. the larger complex of storms is moving into west virginia with severe weather. that is going to be missing us to the south. what i'm tracking is a smaller cluster of some heavy downpours moving through central pennsylvania right now it's near harrisburg, it's tracking to the east and this likely will survive the trip over the mountains and will bring us some scattered showers and downpours this evening. so, this is what to expect between about 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock tonight, a broken line of storms. that means not everyone will get them. those who do, though, could see some locally gusty winds, some brief heavy downpours and it does stay muggy tonight. dewpoints in the mid 60's to around 70 and it's pretty warm out there. yesterday we were stuck in the 70's. 75

meteorologist cecily tynan at the big board with the call from accuweather. cecily. >> hi, monica. double scan live showing that there is a broken line of some strong thunderstorms rolling in from the west. this is all ahead of a cold front and some of that has been severe, actually there was a tornado warning for the wilkes-barre scranton area that just expired at 5 o'clock. a lot of that will be pushing up to the north, will be clipping the lehigh valley but the whole system is moving east at about 20 miles per hour. so, future tracker showing this is likely will be rolling right into the philadelphia area crossing into south jersey around 9 o'clock tonight and it's one of those situations not everyone will get the storms but those who did expect some isolated severe winds, some brief but heavy rain and then behind this system, temperatures really fall. today the heat index about 90 degrees. that's how it feels right now. if you look north and west, though, a dramatic drop. the heat index dropping into the 60's. i'll talk about the cooler weather on the way and how long it lasts

action news" reporter john rawlins will have much more on that in a moment but first meteorologist cecily tynan has the latest on the fourth of july forecast. hey, cecily. >> reporter: hi, rick. it certainly has been a hot fourth of july weekend. it started on friday. our high on friday 93 degrees. on saturday, we dropped down into the upper 80's. as expected, so that means although it's been hot this is not officially a heat wave. yesterday and today both days 91 degrees. the normal high is 87 and tomorrow temperatures should drop back up into the upper 80's. so, again, shouldn't be a heat wave but it is hot. 90 degrees in philadelphia, new york city quite a bit cooler, 74. washington, d.c. 89. and richmond currently 88 degrees. we do have a weak frontal boundary that will be pushing through overnight. ahead of it, though, it's not all that humid. the dewpoint is 60 degrees in philadelphia, slightly humid so as that boundary pushes through we won't see anything more than an isolated shower. isolated shower across northern berks county right now. tomorrow, fourth of july looking pretty nice. li

first to cecily tynan with the action alert. >> double scan showing the storms rolling through on schedule are focused on delaware and south jersey. there is a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of new castle, salem, cumberland and atlantic county. some storms pack wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. that can cause damage. the line of storms i'm tracking over the delaware bay right now moving east at 30 miles per hour. this view alone, we have had close to 170 lightning strikes. sea breeze all in the path of the storm as it pushes east. it will start to weaken once it encounters the coast with cooler air. part of the problem with flash flooding, this is the third stormy night in a row. we have a flash-flood warning in effect until 1:45. do not drive into flooded roads, turn around and don't drown. it's hard to tell how deep the water is. lehigh university reporting a funnel cloud at the same time a radar that showed rotation. flooding, close to two inches of rain and trees damaged across the region. we talk about cool changes behind the system in the seven-day forecast. >> we'll check b
