and msnbc's chris hayes spoke with cedeno, a regular at pulse, who actually lost friends there this weekend. he said that he recognized the gunman from dating apps for gay men and from seeing him inside pulse. >> one of my friends he doesn't want to be spoken to on media, he said he knew in guy from back in 2007 from when he was coming to orlando and to this area and he used to talk to him on the adam for adam app. once he saw the guy's picture on the news, he told his mom, i know this guy. his mom is like, no you couldn't have known him. he was like, no, i know this guy. i spoke with my friend and i told him i was like, i showed him -- yeah, from a gay dating app. and he instantly was like oh, my gosh, i knew i wasn't crazy. i know this guy. >> so -- i mean, so you're saying you and friends of yours, like -- familiar to you from the gay dating app? >> one of my friends had seen in pulse before. he's been there several times. that's not his first time going there for. he clearly had a picture open on adam for adam. he's had his picture up on grinder. two of my friends went to the fbi and th

cord cedeno, who also saw mateen at pulse, says he talked about having a wife and a child. >> i know the struggle of him that his wife and stuff, and his family, didn't know that he was gay, but he's been doing this, coming to these clubs for years and years and years. >> reporter: today, mateen's ex-wife, sitora, told abc news that he told her he often frequented nightclubs without saying they were gay clubs. >> do i think he was gay? >> reporter: she struggled with my question. >> i -- at this point, i think he might have been. maybe wasn't able to be honest about it at all to anybody, because of the family and the culture that he's from? >> reporter: mateen's interest in gay men goes back at least ten years, according to a former classmate at a 2006 law enforcement training course, who did not want his face shown. >> and he asked me if i was gay, and, because i wasn't out at the time, i told him no, i'm not. and he said, if you were gay, you would definitely be my type of guy. >> reporter: yet somehow, mateen, a muslim, was drawn to isis, a terror group that preaches that homosexu

. >> reporter: orlando resident chris cedeno told chris hayes he immediately recognized mateen's face when he was identified as the gunman. >> you said the shooter when you saw the picture, did you recognize him? >> i recognized him from one of the apps. i instantly blocked him because he was like very creepy in his messages. i blocked him immediately. >> over a gay dating app? >> yes. >> reporter: he says mateen has profiles on a number of sites for gay men and regularly sent messages to his friends. >> two of my friends went to the fbi and spoke to them. they already turned in their phones. >> reporter: mateen's ex-wife was asked about his sexuality on cnn late monday. >> do you think he was gay? >> i don't know. >> reporter: the fbi tells nbc news that investigators are checking out the claims which only add to an already complicated portrait of the 29-year-old. his pledge to isis in the 911 call was not his only show of extremism. he told co-workers he had family connections with al qaeda and that he was a member of the terror group hezbollah, triggering an investigation in 2013.
