. >> here with me now, cnn military analyst cedric lleyton. president biden has said he's opposed to providing ukraine with f-16s. it sounds like he might be changing his tune. let's take a listen. >> we've reached a moment where it is time to look down the road and to say what is ukraine going to need as part of a future force to be able to deter and defend against russian aggression as we go forward? f-16's fourth generation fighter aircraft are part of that mix. >> how will f-16s potentially change the situation? >> well, f-16s are an all-purpose aircraft. air to air attacks, air to ground attacks. they're an exceptionally versatile platform. for that reason, they are the desired platform for the ukrainians. they do have some drawbacks. they can't be used on runways. they can fly a fairly great distance, depending on the model, 500 to 1,500 miles without refueling, and they can also return back to base, get new armament and continue to prosecute the war effort. >> and the president told allies that he would support joint training exercises.

joining us now to talk more this is cnn military analyst and retired air force colonel cedric leightons start with the counteroffensive that's coming. first, what are you expecting that this will look like and how important is timing of when this starts? >> yeah, victor, timing is everything. good morning to you. the big thing here is that i think we'll see some movement in the east around bakhmut as sam mentioned in his reporting. we will also probably see something in places a little bit further south. and then i expect things to really move into the southern area, particularly around kherson and zaporizhzhia. that's going to be a particularly dangerous thing for the ukrainians to do especially because of that zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. that is going to require a lot of real planning, real operational planning, finesse in their movements, and it's going to also require the element of surprise. so the strategic part of that is, is kind of gone because we have been talking about this offensive for many months now, but the tactical part is there. and so the ukrainians are going t
