centcom more than 27,000 passengers await follow-on movement from six active locations. and today 17 flights will transport about 3,700 passengers to both dulles airport with 11 flights and philadelphia international airport with six flights. in north com there are nearly 13,000 passengers that remain at five different u.s. installations. these numbers are a snapshot in time and movement of personnel is very fluid. we do not expect these passenger totals to match the total number of evacuees from afghanistan nor will they match the total afghans arriving to the united states. the mission of the evacuation operation was to help as many people as possible leave afghanistan. some of these evacuees included american citizens, third country nationals or afghans whose credentials permitted them to otherwise depart without processing at a military installation. military civilian and contract personnel continue to work closely with both government and non-governmental agencies for families continuing their transition. while operations in afghanistan will conclude soon, the d.o.d

>> neil, we just came out of a briefing here with centcom commander general frank mckenzie. he explained what happened outside abbey gate today. he confirmed the death toll, that 12 u.s. service members, most marines, one navy medic and 15 others were wounded in this suicide bombing attack. he explained the bomber got close to abbey gate, even possibly close enough for the marines to be patting the bomber down. they don't know the size of the blast but clearly to take out so many people with one blast, this was a sizable bomb. it's also clear there was a security failure. what we learned is that the u.s. has been relying on the taliban for their checkpoints and their screenings, if you will, of those coming toward the airport. that is really a very tough visual to imagine. the taliban patting down every person and checking everyone coming to the airport. that is the arrangement that they've made to have some semblance of security. clearly this bomber got through. general mckenzie was asked whether there was any possibility that the taliban were involved. here's what he said.

instead, that attack turned out to be, according to centcom, and the taliban itself, turned out to bee. a couple hours we got this from captain bill urban. u.s. military conducted aself defense unmanned over the horizon air strike today on a vehicle in kabul eliminating an i isis-k threat to the kabul airport. the taliban went and investigated the situation and determined that, yes, there had been a drone strike. you know, this is the second drone strike against isis-k, you can tall this a retaliation or prevention. that's really what looks like happened here. it was almost an-movie type of situation. this drone struck, according to centcom and sources talking to nbc, a car full of jihadis, potential suicide bombers, it sounds as though they were on their way to the airport to conduct that same attack that u.s. intelligence and president biden had warned about. so the question now becomes, you know, if this attack was neutralized, will there still be another isis-k attack at the airport? you mentioned now the u.s. officials are wrapping up their eye vac ways efforts, trying to get dip
