central italy. stone homes, the american and british tourists who rent homes there. tell us a little bit about the area. it's pretty rural? >> reporter: yes, it's very rural, it's a town of about 2,000 people. they say close to 1 million probably in the area right now. we're still in the height of summer here. school doesn't start for another couple of weeks. people are still on vacation. these are the places they come. many of these homes have been restored and rented out as holiday homes. other generational homes, five generations gathering for family holidays. we see a helicopter landing about 300 meters from where i'm standing right now. but it looks like it's got some sort of emergency medical people in it. desperately trying to find the survivors. in front of our position right now, they're describing what the floor looked like. we don't know if this is a holiday house or residents who lived here. again, it's for miles and miles in this area where people have gathered for the end of the summer
