we know that can really wreak havoc on the central valley.t's not making it into parts of the south county today. could make it through the altamont pass into livermore and into parts of the delta, fair field and the carquinez straight, fairfield and parts of the north bay. this is happening on the first day of winter. it started early this morning. winter solstice means the sun is now directly over the tropic of capricorn. with this we have seen it give us those cool temperatures but, of course, for the southern hemisphere direct sun light rays and it's warm summertime there. our sunset will happen before 5:00. it's the shortest day of the year. as soon as the sun sets look up in the sky. saturn and jupiter will be the closest we've seen in almost 800 years. it will look like a bright star in the sky. they're calling this the christmas star because this is the first time this has aligned since 800 years but also they think this was also the setup when jesus was born and they were looking for him over jerusalem so that was pretty cool to see

away from interstate 5, which runs right through the central valley. it's kind of squished between all of these different population centers. what kinds of hospitals are the hardest hit right now? is it just the ones in the big dense areas like l.a., san diego, san francisco? is it the ones that are kind of squeezed between areas? who's struggling the most? >> in a lot of ways it's sort of equal opportunity. the state divides things up by region, and they're rook looking at icu bed capacity. in southern california the most populous part of the state they're tapped out of icu beds. los angeles, san diego, santa barbara. zero icu capacity. also here, this is considered part of the central valley, the san joaquin valley, also no icu capacity. in the bay area, the greater bay area, we're talking about 12%. the cutoff for the state, for the expanded stay at home orders is 15%. the bay area's below that. and sacramento now sitting right at 15%. the only area where it's a little bit less severe is in the northern part of the state. they're operating with abou
