so i don't know the if any of you know your central valley geography. button willow is about 20 miles west of bakersfield and it was a company town. i don't know if you know what a company down is. you have to think back a few lectures, right? company towns were small towns that were more or less founded by companies and their workers, right? so button willow was a product of the miller lux company. and i mentioned the miller l you x company to you in one of our earlier lectures. this was a company based out of san francisco and in the 19th century, the early 20th century, they owned much of the land and they raised cattle, right? and my grandfather worked as an accountant for that company. so that is the sum of the story of how my mother's family came to settle in the central valley. and, again, they had a connection to agriculture and i'll come back in a little bit and maybe say more about my grandmother. but let me talk a little bit about my father's side. so my father's side of the family, they were not displaced by the mexican revolution, but they

danger it helps with the heat right now in the central valley, we've got heat advisories and excessive heat warnings kind of for the fresno area in modesto. and then the north valley heat advisory reading today hit 100. there's not 108 they hit 118 degrees red in california. that's didn't break the all time record in reading. but 118 degrees today in reading, so that's a significant number. i mean, when i looked at that, oh, yeah, 108 that's about right for reading. it was 118 97 to conquer today. temperatures tomorrow be equally as warm. they stay warm in the central valley. but then, as we get to, um the point where we get into tuesday morning, we're going to start to see this onshore flow and priest. the winds come out and more out of the southwest. and then the smoke goes. that's what i showed you earlier and then the temperatures will drop out a little bit. that helps fire danger around here, but it doesn't help the firefighters up on the dixie fire lines only because it's going to increase the southwest winds which any wind even though it's a good direction for fires, typically i

plenty of smoke for the central valley.t is downright unhealthy to very unhealthy as you get over toward the sierra and the foothills. when you look at the bay area as a whole, look at that weird shape right there. wind coming in at the lower levels to the golden gate and over the hills. the sea breeze in the onshore flow pushes it in. if we go through the rest of today, it gets better. a little bit more wind is squeezing into the delta and it will scour out a lot of the smoke down here. with this current scenario for this weekend, the air-quality will be okay. on sunday, it will happen again. it really gets better. as we get into sunday through the afternoon, a much stronger onshore search will clear a lot of this out of. . it will continue to look easy. it could be moderate with a few unhealthy for sensitive groups. go easy on yourself. you can at least take some solace in knowing it is not all that bad here at this point. current temperatures out there are right around 60 degrees. by the time we get into the late morning

but that is just smoke from multiple fires funneling into the central valley getting stuck in the central valley and creating unhealthy air quality. take a look. these are the current live sensors. and you see the reds up around sacramento, you guys sacramento has had like beijing tight air for the last couple of weeks. not healthy. we have been very fortunate. we have had lots of greens, which is what we want, and we've had very few yellows, and that's good. yellows is kind of the moderate and that's where we are again. tomorrow i think tomorrow setup is going to be a lot like today. we're going to see temperatures a lot like today. you notice the current temperatures kind of mild. why is that because of the smoke, the smoke adds a shade component to the atmosphere. and actually cools temperatures down 5 to 10 degrees in some cases, so spare the air day tomorrow. not surprised. probably see one on saturday, potentially saturday is going to start to clear out and that should market the transition from what we have now. by saturday afternoon, it should start to look better by sunday. it sh

much of that smoke has settled into portions of the central valley.of it, though, is still continues to be sent to the east of us. so sparing us here in the bay area. the worst of that air quality seeing a nice on shore flow this week. that's going to keep temperatures moderated, especially as compared to last week. not a big change for coastal areas today. we're still hanging on to those comfortable 60's for most spots. as for besides cities, it will be 70's to low 80's, another really nice day. actually a very similar feel as to what we had for august first yesterday, san jose 81 santa clara 79 fremont through oakland in the 70's. where is low 90's to upper 80's for most of our inland cities. nice way to spend the afternoon, especially for those of us inland that are used to it being a lot hotter than this vacaville. you are one. oh, one at your warmest last week. today only 90 degrees. that sounds like a breeze right temperatures tomorrow will be a little bit warmer before an even bigger cool down into wednesday. so we do see a little movement this

this low pressure areas really helping to do a number on central valley air quality creating just enough smoke can lift a bit be transported elsewhere. so air quality is good. we have some fog near the coast line which is going to stay put through the day. keeping areas like sunset district in the upper 50's. as for bayshore cities today it's mostly 70's burlingame at 74 degrees. foster city there as well. redwood city and san carlos beach at 77. we're a south bay temperatures in the upper 70's to low to mid 80's. this is cooler than yesterday's 90's in a couple of spots like morgan hill, pleasanton and livermore. you're also down from yesterday's 90's to the mid 80's today. worst oakland berkeley richmond and san leandro in the 60's concord and danville. each 85 antioch in vacaville in the low 90's are only 2 spots. barely hanging on to the 90's and that's a change from yesterday because take a look at where we're going to be tomorrow. even cooler yet likely to only see 80's that our warmest and if that some low 80's for inland areas break from the heat before we see a bill back tempora

even in the central valley, even around like tahoe as we head into tomorrow these are the current air quality readings and any time you see greens you're happy. that's that's that's really good. and even sacramento this westerly winds helped them a lot. they've been listen. sacramento's been inundated in the oranges and the reds the last week, two weeks and then of course, lake tahoe. those sea breeze is really not getting there and you're finding aircraft city that is just literally toxic especially on the south lake tahoe side right now and in reno so if you're heading that way, it'll be slow to clear out there as well. the forecast for the smoke is something like this. i'll take you through tomorrow here we are in the morning it's going all right right it's kind of pushing what you see what lingers though. especially down in this santa clara valley out in the modesto area and then it kind of moves on, so it's not going to. it's going to be a slow clear and as i said earlier, there are a lot of fires burning big fires and so they're going to continue to pump smoke out really for the

now see those oranges showing up in the central valley up by reading. that's the wind event right there. i'll see you watch what happens about three a.m. for and watch calistoga. cousteau goes from two miles an hour to 30 miles an hour quickly. that's an elevation and then it looks like right about here is the peak wednesday morning, and you see words that where's the red contour? it's that's where the heart strongest winds will be. do you see those over your house in your neighborhood? most of us don't most of us will be not impacted by this that is the hope the other thing is going to happen as this thing moves in as this wind moves in tomorrow, it's going to recirculate that smoke that pretty much blew out of the area today, and it's going to bring a massive amount of smoke back into our zone, creating poor air quality. hence the air quality alerts, so there's a lot going on. but again, really the big story here will be the dixie fire and the fires up and out of sacramento because those wind shifts are really playing havoc on these poor firefighters

in fact, a poor to very poor as you make your way into the central valley. real this to you've got some poor quality. you get the stockton. tracy. it is looking very poor right now. we've got a long way to go before we're done with all the smoke until these fires go out. we're going to see this kind of repeat itself time after time tonight. the smoke models are again, be getting to pick up on that offshore wind developing throughout the night tonight. and that is going to pump in more the smoke from the fires. and again, it's going to come all the way down to the surface, not just a lot but down the surface, you may have noticed the smell of smoke in your neighborhood may be was a mask on your car. we could very well see that again as we look toward tomorrow morning by the afternoon, though, there should be some improvement. i think a stronger sea breeze by tomorrow afternoon. but you can see these fires that are burning in the smoke just kind of billowing up and rotating back yesterday or they're going toward the east and now you have the winds switch and l
