you can see that chill making its way in from the central valley, creeping in closer to our more inlandast bay communities. this is going to be the chilliest part, inland east bay communities and north bay communities with mid- to possibly lower 30s, petaluma possibly 34 degrees early tomorrow. so warm winter weather gear is necessary to start off your tuesday, but by tomorrow afternoon, we will be warming up again to well above average across the bay area. we'll see high temperatures sitting in the 60s from our inland communities to coast, although you might be upper 50s in point reyes, but for january, we'll take it. it's going to remain well above average, warmer than we should be feeling this time of year. normally we're in the upper 50s. enjoy it, though, while you can because if we look at our seven-day forecast, you'll see a cooldown by the end of the seven days. by this weekend we'll be back to seasonable, normal for this time of year. it depends how much you love the warm air, how much you'll enjoy this week. if you liked the past couple days, a very similar pattern is in store

if you look in the central valley, that is the next area of low pressure that is about to spark this next instance of offshore winds. let me show you how this comes together and why it keeps happening this way. when we look at the satellite imagery, you'll notice nothing coming down through nevada if you look at the regular satellite because the storm track is easy to pick out going up and over, but when you look at it this way, you can see what is about to come down inside the continent. within this is a tight area of low pressure that is going to drive the winds. there's no rain in here. you can't even really see the clouds. if we visualize this differently, watch the wind field as that moves south. you'll see the screen light up here as everything progresses done the state and right there tomorrow offshore winds develop seemingly out of nowhere, but now we know what's going on. these are these areas are low pressure going over the top of the state and diving down the interior and that's what keeps giving us these offshore winds. it's also why we aren't getting rain. they got to go

an update now on the future of governor newsom's controversial underground water tunnel in the central valley. today, the santa clara valley water district voted 6 to 1 to contribute nearly $10 million toward the planning and design of this massive infrastructure project. valley water is the 13th water agency to vote in favor of the plan. the 45 mile tunnel would take fresh water from the sacramento river and divert it underground to large water pumps already located in tracy. from there, the water would be diverted to other parts of the state. it will cost an estimated $20 billion. environmental groups and counties along the delta who oppose the watater tunnel say ts tunnel would make the delta water saltier, lead to more algae blooms and hurt the fish that swim in it. defense secretary pick pete hegseth is on capitol hill, kicking off confirmation hearings for president elect trump's incoming cabinet. he pitched himself as a change agent to lead the department. democrats grilled him on his sexual misconduct allegations, drinking and past comments on women in the military. nbc's alice barr h

local officials there say high speed rail is giving the central valley a big boost, creating nearly 15,000 jobs. >> what is represented today is a game changer, a transformative moment for kern county's workforce. our access to uc merced, our access to other parts of the state, our access to upward mobility to skill up to get some education. >> the biden administration has contributed more than $6 billion to the rail project. future funding under the trump administration remains uncertain. life threatening and destructive winds are set to hit much of southern california, bringing extreme fire danger to the area starting tomorrow. the severe winds are set to kick in in the evening hours and could reach up to 80 miles an hour. the national weather service is warning it will affect not just parts of california, but also nevada. arizona. red flag fire conditions could stick around in southern california all the way through thursday. firefighters here in the bay area are there now pre-positioning to help with the possibility of wildfires sparking up. we have seen wet weather on and off over the

devastating landscape that, that will be going to we, we do have crews already down there all from the central valley and actually all from throughout california. good thing i can say is there is uh, probably more than sufficient water should one or maybe 2 houses to come to uh, to a fire event. i don't think there is a water system in the us that would be able to support the firefighting efforts when you have um, you know, vast neighborhoods and, and street after street after street of homes on fire. i can tell you unequivocally, we do not take the fact that we place evacuation orders or, or even warnings very lightly already. you know, there has been a lot of technology, equally technology advances in the last few years to get out the message that we need. people to get out of out of these areas that the fire is approaching. you know, it's, it's kind of a ready set go. when we tell you, ready is gonna fire comes. we tell you get set. that means we need to get out. when we tell you, go, we need you to go because it does, obviously, is we have seen that it does come down to a matter of life and death

but you can see some of the bright colors in the central valley. that's some of the wind that is developing, with some gusts up to about 40mph. now, i do anticipate tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon and evening. we'll get some on and off gusts 15 to 45. a steady wind 10 to 20. and the top risk will be in the mountains 500ft and above. so even though we've had this wind, we've also thankfully had some rainfall recently. so that's helping us out on that fire danger front. but it's the opposite situation in southern california. look at these red flag fire warnings and wind warnings all through socal. with those gusts out of the northeast up to 100mph. again, the national weather service is calling this a particularly dangerous situation. they save that terminology only for a handful of events. sustained winds up to about 50. no big rain chances the next two weeks. and one last thing about socal here los angeles rain sean only 16 hundredths of an inch since october. they should have 4.68in by now. i've got more looks at all of this coming up. ano
