he went with chavez on a trip to europe where, among other things, cesar and helen chavez had an audience with the pope. leavey was there. on the flight back, tapes of cesar talking about the trip, what it meant to him to meet the pope. it was this wonderful resource for me. >> do you repeat any of those stories for us recent readers of chavez? >> absolutely. they're all -- i mean, i do repeat the stories, and then i try to separate out the facts and the way the stories have sort of gotten embellished over the years, some of them. really interesting and, i think, important ways. chavez created, to some degree, his own mythology, and he did it because he was a great organizer and did it to sort of help with the cause. but in the end, you know, 21 years after his death, i think it's time to sort of separate out and show the ways in which he created the mythology. >> i understand that you did not have access to most of the family, or i believe dolores, as well. >> right. >> could you tell us the reasons they felt, perhaps, they didn't want to cooperate with another book? >> so i think i shou

he used to be a captain when they would do picket lines for cesar chavez.was very involved, and he told me he came from -- it was from arizona, and he used to work in the fields as well, in selinas and for some reasons, he moved, and he went one day, one of his cousins, i believe, one of his cousins invited him to go listen to cesar chavez, and he was like, okay. let's go. so, he went and he listened to everything -- the words he had to say, like they impacted him in a great way because he said that when he was sitting there, listening to him, he was thinking to himself, hey, this is me. this is my father. this is my uncles, you know? talking about farm workers. and that very same day, he said he went to him after everything had finished and he told him, i'm in. i'm with you. and the next day, he went and he told his boss, i can't work no more. and he talked about that it was hard during the strike because -- >> five long years, right? >> like you said, they were living on donations and stuff like that. but to him, it was a very big privilege to be able to

chavez understood this completely. i encourage everyone before you die, go up to la paz. which is the headquarters of the united farm workers. they have cesars office. that left just the way it is when he passed away. chavez only had an eighth grade education. when you walk into his office, books. so he was highly educated and highly literate. and to answer your question, non-violence was not being passive. non-violence is a philosophical strategy. it's shaming your enemy to change their ways. again cesar was not passive at all. the ufw was not passive at all they wanted to engage the public engage the media to get people to cover this story. this was why internationally people today are studying delano. it was the special moment of activism. for that sleeping giant that we talked about. let me also complicate that by talking about fear, again. i got this from a lot of oral history. is for some families, right, who were undocumented. or for some families who were not part of the union, fear was a real driver of them during the era. they didn't want to go join the union because there was a fear of being punished by your employer. in some case

not many people are familiar with dolores huerta as they are with cesar chavez. for that reason, we wanted to bring her contributions to light. come inside. the exhibition starts here with some materials that give a little bit of a sense of dolores' background and how she got into community organizing. she was born in new mexico in 1930. she was a second child of the marriage of alicia chavez and juan fernandez. when she was about 2 years old, her parents divorced. dolores' mother moved with her three children to california, to the town of stockton, the agricultural town which was multi-cultural. that was where dolores grew up. dolores' mother was very -- she had a very -- personality. she was a hard worker and provided her children close to a middle class upbringing. during the day, she worked as a waitress. as night, she worked in the canneries. so eventually, she was able to buy herself a lunch counter and then a hotel where she would house migrant farm workers who were passing by the town and who could not afford to stay anywhere. she'd just house them for fr

south vanness runs from south of market to cesar chavez street. originally residential after the 1906 earthquake it was used as a fire break. many car dealerships and businesses exist on vanness today with expansion of bus lanes. originally marlet street was named after james vanness, seventh mayor of san francisco from 1855 to 1856. vanness heavy are streets in santa cruz, los angeles and fresno in his honor. in 1915 streetcars started the opening of the expo. in 1950s it was removed and replaced by a tree-lined median. it was part of the central freeway from bayshore to hayes valley. it is part of uses 101. it was damaged during the 1989 earthquake. in 1992 the elevator part of the roadway was removed. it was developed into a surface boulevard. today the vanness bus rapid transit project is to have designated bus lanes service from mission. it will display the history of the city. the city. >> welcome to the townhall on return to school. this townhall is hosted by the san francisco department of public health. this townhall will be in english. w
