police have a wide area cordoned off in the heart of downtown san jose at plaza de cesar chavez on market right at park. near the fairmont at the corner of the tech museum. you might say that this is the beating heart of downtown san jose. five or six suspects jumped a victim. when officers arrived the victim was found to have been stabbed. the victim died at the hospital. the suspects are still at large. they are saying that this was not gang-related. they don't have a motive at this point. the crime scene itself is wide. they have the blockade out a block in each direction and the crime scene tape stretches from the b. of a. across the street into the park itself and then back to the tech museum corner there. so we don't know why it's that big but that is unusually large. and speaking of unusual, we typically see homicides in east san jose and also on the outskirts of downtown but they have it this close to where a lot of the businesses and families come to take their children into the fountain. this is unusual. that's what we know for now here in downtown san jose. we are live, kiet do, kpix 5. >>>

the idea is to deal with the large squirrel population here at cesar chavez park in berkeley. en an ongoing problem in the area. this particular park is built on top of a landfill. those critters have been burrowing holes in the dirt here. there's concern that could lead to a toxic leak if they break through the clay cap that covers up this former dump. so the city of berkeley has made it a crime to feed squirrels and other animals in the park. this happened during the council meeting last night. originally the city was considering killing the squirrels but the council backed away from the idea after a public outcry. the council formed a special squirrel subcommittee to try to come up with another solution. that's when they decided the best way to control the critters was to simply have the public stop feeding them. once the new law takes effect, anyone tossing food to squirrels could face $1,000 fine and possibly six months in jail. over the next couple of months, the city is expected to begin putting up new signs and brochures at city parks letting people know not to feed the

cesar chavez. the most visible thing, the black backpack where you see the evidence markers. there were also beer bottles and other items found in the park. police are collecting it all as possible evidence in this deadly stabbing. at 2:15 a.m., police say a group of five or six people attacked a man at park and market streets. he was stabbed at least once. police arrived on scene and emergency crews rushed the victim to the hospital. but he was pronounced dead shortly after. homicide detectives have been canvassing the area. they are conducting interviews. police are still trying to determine a motive. but from the preliminary investigation they say this does not appear to be gang- related. police are not sure if the man knew his attackers or if this was random. >> it's too early in the investigation. as soon as we can kind of find out from the witnesses, you know, whether or not there was some sort of a conversation between the victim and the suspects prior to the attack, then we can go ahead and confirm some of that information. >> reporter: police are looking for the suspects but have not put out any descriptions yet. we do not know
