[applause] u.s. been watching betty liu speak with former president bill clinton, founder of the clinton foundation, at the clinton global initiative's annual america event. mark: joining us with more is politics managing editor mark halperin, also the cohost of "with all due respect." i was struck by something the former president said. he said there was a gaping hole between productivity and the fact that it is not widely shared. was that a hint of an indictment of the current administration's policies? mark h.: statistics don't lie and even president obama would tell you that is a problem. but there are statistics, as this very proud former president points out, that suggests he made progress on that and the country made progress on that during his time in office. but the long-term trend including during the last six years of this president have not been good on that point and it is a point that both clintons have worked on from back in arkansas.

interview, we agreed to talk about some of the topics that president clinton was addressing at cgi americaich included topics we wanted to discuss anyway. >> he is good at deflecting. you don't see it coming. he swifted from if the foundation is going to be a problem for the campaign his wonderful daughter and a greet life they had. did he address any of the questionable donations the foundation has taken? >> sure. that's a quick excerpt. we have a longer interview with the former president. he talked about, i mean, specifically specifically i asked, you say there's no evidence anybody at the state department including secretary clinton did anything in exchange for the big donations given by corporations wealthy individuals to the clinton foundation. can you really say none of them were seeking anything in return? he talked about that. he talked about specific donations, the donation from algeria. he talked about the donation from boeing the donation the clinton foundation made to "the new york times" neediest cases fund. that was a little thing to wet your palette. >> it worked. >> i can'

. >> i want to ask you about veterans because i know that's an issue that cgi america has been workinggot commitments from two groups, service nation and got through six to help veterans transition. things have certainly improved from the days when you were younger and veterans, vietnam veterans were being spit upon in the streets. but, today, it's a different kind of tragedy. it's veterans committing suicide. it's veterans suffering in silence. it's the v.a. scandal. you've somebody who has actually sent men into battle, some of whom didn't make it back. what can be done to help these people who have given so much and have such a tough time and don't seem to know what to do after they leave the military? >> a positive, but mixed blessing. many of these veterans who have sustained brain injuries, particularly, survived roadside bombs which in an earlier era would have killed them. and battlefield medicine has improved so much that a lot of people who were surviving were previously killed. but then they bring big challenges home. and they have to be dealt with. and then they come home t
