inside. let's assist inside if you can. >> reporter: firefighters who raced to this small brick home are grieving, the family they behind flames. and most of the windows were blocked by security bars like this one, which had to be removed. >> we located an additional victim, total of five. >> reporter: it was too late. three adults and six children lost their lives. one child is hanging on in critical condition. we spoke with their grandfather, who says his heart hurts. >> i love my grandchildren. my grand babies. now, all of my grandbabies are gone. >> reporter: authorities say the fire began in the living room, from an air conditioning unit. they found a smoke detector and think it was working. >> nothing in our training can prepare us for this heartbreaking event. >> reporter: the fire department is installing free smoke detectors. steve osunsami, abc news, memphis. >>> now, to maryland, where several children were evacuated after their bus caught fire. a nearby resident saw the disaster unfolding and helped the kids off the bus and into her home. no word on what caused that fire. >>> north carolina is facing controversial transgender bathroom law. the ncaa is relocating all championships scheduled to played in this state this school year. the move comes weeks after the nba called the all-star game out of charlotte. a spokesperson for north carolina's republican party called the ncaa decision, quote, absurd. the move will cost the state games in the division i men's basketball tournament in march. >>> look at this picture of a 12-year-old boy, standing up to
