we're here at the california academy of sciences chabot across the bay. they are looking at this s we. of course, we're talking about kepler, the observatory that's about 40 million miles from the earth right now. this was a spacecraft that was launched back in 2009 and it's basically out there looking at our milky way galaxy. and it's taking photographs and also images of areas of the sky where it's looking for planets. and it has found thousands of new planets. now they have developed a problem, a mechanical problem aboard kepler where two of the four rotating wheels, the wheels that allow it to get into specific positions so it can look into areas of space, have frozen up. they believe those are wheel bearing problems much like what you would have in your car if your wheel bearing froze up and developed a problem. well, they say that kepler has been put in safe mode. but it is not dead yet. and a lot of the astronomers here including ryan wyatt say kepler has provided a wealth of information to scientists. >> kepler has been an amazing instrument. it h
