i knew that karl could do the home. >> and chad, jump in. >>'m wondering what the fire department and fema or red cross, what have they told you about your house? we see the fires in california a lot. the fires burn from the inside out, and when the curtains catch on fire from the heat, have they told you to put tinfoils on the outside of the window to keep the radiant heat from coming inside or are you just winging it? >> i am winging it. i am three miles are the the edge of -- well, i'm almost two miles from the edge of town. and in the middle of town, i live right across from the fire department. they are the ones who have helped me to burn the fields around i felt that urgency this spring because it was so dry. they built that fire station just for me, because they know how i am with fires. i have had a few fires myself in ditches and things. so no, they haven't told me anything like that, but i feel like i'm far enough away and i have my hoses out. i have the sprinkler on my woodpile and that is my big worry if it got into the woodpile

there will be definitely a severe weather threat today. >>> thank you, chad.son is joining us from sierra vista for an update as well on our fire fires. are things looking any better today? i think i saw some smoke behind you in the distance? >> reporter: there's still a bit of smoke. firefighters are beginning their assault this morning. perhaps the biggest gift mother nature has given them is less wind. can you see the white smoke off in the mountains. yesterday wind was gusting between 45 and 60 miles an hour. we're looking at wind gusts about 10 to 15 miles an hour. fire crews say that is what they want. it helps them get a handle on this, we've seen them making some drops this morning on some of those hotspots that are popping up along the mountains, trying to contain it as much as they can. at last count it burned just under 27,000 acres. it's about 27% contained. crews are still making an assessment this morning, trying to update some of those numbers. they do that by flying over, looking down and trying to figure out what has burned overnight. we know

lots of people shifted across the border, they fled there to chad for safety. and that went all very well. well, it didn't actually go terribly well because the local people weren't wild about having a quarter of a million people arrive in a desperately poor place where they didn't have enough water, let alone anything else. it didn't actually go that well, but at least people were not being bombed and killed there. however, and there's been a sort of a hatred between khartoum and yes mean that for decades. however, recently there's been a refreshment, and the consequence of that is that the military is now prepared to betray the people of the ethnic group who are within chad in refugee camps and to send them home. home to what? you saw those pictures of what their villages are like. some of those villages being repopulated by arabs. home to what? you know, this is going to be forcible return, and it is not going to go at all well. you know, we just hear really, really dreadful stories about the consequences of this and where it will lead. and, unfortunately, a

our own meteorologist chad myers is here with us and, chad, in light of all of the tornadoes, right,in the last couple of months, what does it mean now that hurricane season is upon us? >> well, that means a lot of humid any spots across the middle part of country where the storms have been. means there's a lot of flooding. means we have a la nina that has ended, that maybe caused a little of our severe weather season. la nina can enhance it. now that it's gone, maybe that enhancement is gone a little bit. you know, we didn't even realize we were going to have a big severe weather season until april, because january, february, march, had nothing. 50 tornadoes in three months, and then all of a sudden, it just, right on top of us, in april and may. now something's on top of us, maybe tropically, although it's not even far enough in the middle of the atlantic to have any strength before it hits land. it will becoming ashore here looks like maybe north of brevard county, maybe even towards, i would say almost further north at the beach. does it mean more weather? no. actually. where did

our meteorologist chad meyers tells us what it is all about. what is happening here? worst day for the fires and firefighters as well. they're trying to build a 30-mile-long fire line and this fire is completely uncontained. 0% containment. wind's going to be 30 to 50 miles per hour today. firefighters are going to be in the way. like if they're not always in the way. but today with winds blowing like this, the firefighters will be in the way of getting blown back, getting moved back all of a sudden everybody's got to get out of the way. let me tell you, these firefighters do an incredible job. they work long hours in very tough conditions. it's very hot there today and the wind is blowing again. let's get to it. critical fire conditions even extremely critical fire conditions here from phoenix all the way over toward albuquerque. the fire will be right in here and that's where the circle is for the most extremely critical conditions. i actually can see the fire on the satellite. you can see the smoke on the satellite now. phoenix would be way over here and albuquerqu
