chad myers is tracking the storm for us. chad, what are you seeing? >> i've seen the storm make the right turn that we expected all along, finally, because it was really making a b-line all the way to wilmington. here's the line of longitude right there. follow the eye, now move to the east of that line of longitude. so now we know that it has its eastward component that we always thought. this part of the storm will rotate around, it will wobble up through over moorhead city, through cape hatteras, and out to sea, just like that. because hurricanes don't go in straight lines. you think they do, but they're only going in straight lines if they're very symmetrical. that's not a symmetrical storm, it's kind of a wobbler. this is going to continue to wobble up the east coast. the problem is it's wobbling at 90 miles per hour with the eastward front there and it's going to get to 100 miles per hour before it does hit morehead city and then probably into the sound and across to nags head. here's the issue, when you talk about the sound, it's a pretty shall

it is, chad. i don't know if you can see the direction of the wind just by the way the rain is falling, but yeah, it's whipping around the other direction and it's coming down hard and the wind gusts are pretty impressive. >> yeah, your wind gusts are at least 65 miles per hour on the backside of that eye and as we go up towards the northeast, rene's, as we get into this part here, you not only have wind gusts near 70 to 90, the forward motion and so as our reporters continue to get better and get worse, aleena you'll get better, rene you're about to get slammed by the worst of this storm. you can never take the backside, aleena out of the storm. you can never not count that because all of a sudden you board up the east side and the winds blow through the west side and i have not seen you have winds like that the entire time we've been there. >> no, this is unique. we have seen strong wind gusts throughout the night and also throughout the afternoon, but nothing like this, chad, nothing like this.

chad, if i can, i want to start with you. where is the storm headed right now and as it makes landfall how bad do you think this is going to be? >> it's moving north. it's going to turn the northeast. it's going to make a glancing blow at wilmington, north carolina. that means it's going to slam into carolina beach, into wrightsville beach, into surf city and all the way up the carolina coast. this couldn't be worse case than what we have right now with a category 2. sure it could be 3 or 4 but we're going to have an eye and an eye wall on land for many miles, maybe 50 miles. usually a hurricane will come on shore, you get ten miles worth of damage and it's over. this is going to skim along the coast all the way through here for miles and miles and miles taking on its on shore wind and also its on shore beach erosion right there along the carolina coast. it couldn't be any worse than that. we'll show you the radar in a second. we have now hurricane warnings all the way from the virginia/north carolina border down to moorehead

chief meteorologist chad myers is in atlanta with more information about the plane's flight path.o many crucial pieces of information on these map and these blips of plane. this plane did deviate a bit from its normal route. >> that's right. in the morning when the plane was taking off there were a series of thunderstorms in the usual path. this isn't unusual. i mean, sometimes you fly from atlanta to nashville you have to go around charlotte one way or maybe you're going all the way over toward chattanooga. just depends on what's up there, how the wind is, the direction of the wind, are there storms in the way. i know it looks nilly willy when i show you that and there's thousands of planes, it looks like there's no organization. there's interstates in the sky that will take you from one point to the next. that's how you get the 12-hour night all the way to kuala lumpur. many times you're not going in a straight line, you're going from one spot to the next spot. in a normal flight -- we've watched these over and over, many, many flights i've backed up. most of the time the flight

chad myers, you've been watching this roll off the coast of florida. talk to me about the conditions right now. >> this affects the entire east coast. florida today, florida tomorrow, south carolina, north carolina, wednesday, thursday, and then friday even on up into new jersey, long island, on saturday we're talking major waves in boston, in maine and all the way up to nova scotia where i think it finally makes real landfall there. there is the issue. the storm all week long will be the rip currents. the water is going to pile up and then go out and if you're a swimmer and get caught in a rip country, you're going at 30 miles an hour and you're going to try to swim against it and it's the worst thing you could do. there's lightning and there could be flooding. this thing is going to explode and then as you travel up the east coast, travel away from jacksonville but towards north carolina, i know there's going to be a bigger cone that gets wider as you get farther away. the middle of that cone will be nags head. there's north carolina, wilmington, and

we'll talk to chad myers about that. chad joining me here, david soucie is joining me, madrid bureau chief, al goodman, as well. al, let me begin with you on the who, what, where we know so far. what do we know about the cause of the crash and who was on board this plane? >> hi, brooke. as to who was on board the plane, we've had the most definitive description here just in the recent hours from an executive of algeir airlines. he said there were 116 people aboard from 16 different nags nationalities. 24 from burkina faso from where the plane took off. five canadians, four germans, eight from lebanon. three whose nationalities are not known and spanish crew. this was supposed to be a straight forward flight. overnight, left 1:00 in the morning from burkina faso, a three-hour flight straight north to algeria. but the french foreign minister has said in france the pilot apparently had problems with the weather, and went to make a diversion and that was about 50 minutes into the flight. and that's when contact was lost with

chad myers is in the cnn weather center. what do we know about the flight and the people on board? >> the airport it took off, the capital of burkina faso, that airport's website says that french forces stationed in mali detected the crash in a desert area with difficult access between a couple towns in mali. now, there were reports earlier in the day citing african diplomats by news reporters in africa that said that the plane which was going from burkina faso to algeria, it should have been a straight shot about three hours north had to divert because of bad weather in the area, and that's when they lost contact about one hour after it took off. also, on the people on board conflicting figures, 116 is the number that we've heard including crew, but it may be as high as 119. a number of nationalities, about 50 french. we've got french officials in paris saying clearly there were a lot of french citizens on board. some number from burkina faso, five canadians, four germans. others from lebanon and from various countries in africa and in europe. right now the effort is trying to fin
