chad meyers, our meteorologist with us, chad, we have been talking about new bern, again, this is as i am getting pounded here, and the wind and the rain here -- the real problem up in new bern where they have been dealing with storm surges, the rescue crews want to get out as soon as they can. when do you think that will be? when will they see the wind speeds get below 50 miles per hour? >> in ten hours. ten. 55 miles per hour, and you are in a ten-foot zodiac trying to go through the streets, and it's an impossible task. you are putting too much pressure on the rescuers to get to you. the problem is the neuse river, and they get there and move into new bern, it went up from one foot to 11 foot. because of low tide, we lost two feet of surge. all that water will go back up, so i think we are going to get higher than an 11-foot surge, probably up to 12 to 13-foot surge. so let's just get right to it here. john, just take a breather and you get dry, dry your ear out. there's new bern. here comes the rain. it comes in from the neuse river here, and the entire area has been raining ther

thank you for talking to us. >>> let's go to chad meyers, our meteorologist, and chad we know this is first course of the meal to come. the eye of the storm, you coached us through it many times when it comes to coverage. tell us what they are seeing in wilmington and what the reality is to follow. >> finally our crews can begin to cry out in wilmington, because they were really in it. wilmington picked up four inches of rain in one hour. in just the last hour, 4.0 inches. so our live shot we had was right there, and there you see that that is the center of part of the eye right there. our crew is still right there, still seeing some rainfall but that is the calm eye, and like you said and he said, that's not it. there's all this that is going to come your way very, very quickly, as it moves on by. this storm did pick up some motion this morning, because in the overnight hours it just sat there and there was a threat that this was not even going to be on land until noon. at least now it's moving something, maybe six miles per hour, and the rotation is still there, but this part of the

i want to check in with our chad myers.hout north carolina and south carolina. we are reporting this storm, but let's get an overview. chad, where is the storm now, what's it looking like? >> it's about 20 miles to the southwest of you, and it still looks very wet. there's still a lot of the storm that's over water, over the ocean. still picking up more humidity to dump on these already flooded areas. 14 rivers in major flood stage or higher. some even making a run at record. davis had a wind speed of 108. wilmington air park, not far from where you are, 105. that happened about three hours ago when the eye was on top of you. a couple things are still going on. the rain continues on up to the flooded areas around new bern. also here to the north, a couple purple squares. those purple squares are now tornado warnings. these are not ef-4s and 5s like we see in the plains in the spring, but like waterspouts that will come onshore and still could do damage because the winds could be like 120 or 130. and that's enough wind speed

chad meyers is tracking hurricane florence. what do the models say, chad? >> it says this goes to one -- 150, 150 miles per hour. it's nearing the top end of cat 4. a lot of insomnia and amnesia going on here and people are not sleeping because they are worried about the storm, and potentially correctly so because it could make a severe storm surge like what we saw in gulfport from katrina, because it will be out here in the water so long getting so big, getting that bubble of water under the storm itself, and then that bubble crashes onshore at almost a 90-degree angle. that's the worst. if it's a glancing blow, you don't get as much surge. but through hatteras and through wilmington, we don't know because it's three days out yet but you need to prepare for this storm, because the gfs and european models are within 100 miles of each other of what this storm is going to do. it will make a devastating impact somewhere along the carolinas. there will be people that need to leave because there will be water coming onshore 15 feet deep and you just need to get
