chad myers at the weather center, chad, what do you see? >> john, the storm right now is a rainmaker as we expected. still making winds of 65 with gusts, but really now, the rant event, it is 65 miles per hour but it is a tropical storm. so hurricane warnings have been dropped but hurricane watches have been posted up the coast because the water is going to get offshore and get into the warm waters and then intensify. it may not gain intensity, but 70 miles per hour, that's pretty close. that's what's going to happen with the rainfall as well. still intensifying because of the warmer party in the atlantic and the gulf, the purple area here, greater than 10 inches and i'm assuming places likely on radar estimates picked up 20. 20 inches of rainfall that's already fallen. and more is still coming. here's the latest gust in daytona, 62 miles per hour. officially 2.49 million people without power. and rainfall is going to be moving up into the local country of georgia, into south carolina and north carolina. some spots up here could pick up ano

chad myers standing by with the latest forecast. chad, what are you seeing? >> john, the 140 mile an hour number came over at 5 a.m. the pressures are going down and the winds are still coming up. the storm is going to be very significant, anywhere from sarasota down to fort myers and even naples. some of those towns will -- every square foot of those towns will be under some feet of water. that's how much surge is going to come into this. randi kaye touched on this in punta gorda. we didn't get a surge. no, we were down there. this is a wind storm. this is a wind storm and a surge storm and a flood storm all in one. this is going to spread itself out across the entire state. everybody is going to see something and there is one on the eastern said of the state but the big problem i see, a 12-foot surge. all of those canal homes in cape coral, in punta gorda, there are thousands, they're only three feet above sea level. if this water comes up 12, that means water is up to the gutter. there's no place for you left in the house. you absolutely need to be out of

chad myers, let me go to you on this. and i know you want to show us the speed and the direction of this storm and where it's heading, but that video that leyla was showing us, just a few moments ago, that bridge getting washed out, if we could show it one more time, chad, you were mentioning this in the previous hours. the danger of flash flooding is so severe right now, it sounds like this could be repeating itself for hours now, for days, potentially. >> absolutely, jim. there are places in rivers that are river gauges that are now higher than during maria. that's how much rainfall this storm is putting down. it is a slow, lumbering storm, 85-mile-per-hour winds, with 105-mile-per-hour gusts, 1000-mile-per-hour gusts, but it's moisture surge that's coming off of the gulf, coming off of the caribbean sea. and the rain just hasn't stopped. and there are spots now, i know that there are spots with 15 inches already on the ground. for a bit, the radar went out, the communications didn't work so well, after about -- when th

let's begin with chad myers, he has the latest hurricane center advisory. and chad, something that i found interesting here, officials were saying there is a higher than usual unpredict ability about how strong this storm will be and where it is going to land. >> true. and i think we're getting -- we're anxious. we want this to be perfect. we want all of the models to line up and say this is what is going to happen and that hasn't happened. a few models on the right and the left, not really agreeing. so an 80 mile per hour storm at the 11:00 advisory two minutes ago. the storm does move across cuba overnight and into the southwestern part of florida with winds and waves already on shore by 8:00 wednesday morning. there will already be wind. but the storm is still growing. where does it go from right there? that is the question. the cone gets very large. does it go left or right? because that makes an entirely different forecast for everyone if it stays out into the ocean a little bit, in the gulf or does it turn to the right. we have rays there, the tampa s

what's the latest, chad? >> the latest is that the national weather service is issuing a 9-foot-likely surge there, a 9-foot level of the water. that's the fifth highest level charleston harbor has ever seen. the highest was hugo, that was at 12 feet. we're at 9. all of a sudden, this is a major flood situation if we get it at the wrong time and if we get the onshore flow. right now, there's an offshore flow. that's helping. that's helping myrtle beach. that's helping charleston kind of keep the water levels down for now. but i don't believe that that's going to continue all day. i certainly know it's not. and especially to the north of that center, it's not really an eye. let's just call it the center of circulation. myrtle beach going to see 39 miles per hour this hour. but as it gets closer and turns direction, that will be the problem for ore county, for waccamaw river, that's the possible flooding there. we have the hurricane warnings in effect right now. here's what the winds are going to look like. lik

chad, ian is not yet done. >> it's not.t's going back to be a hurricane again and the hurricane warnings are now posted for the entire coast of south carolina. yes, this thing is getting into the atlantic. getting into the gulf stream, into the warm water of the gulf stream and it will try to reintensify. 75 miles per hour for now but that's not on shore yet. there is still time between that spot and landfall. going to have to watch that. surge coming into places that don't need it like charleston. charleston can flood with just 4 to 6 inches of rain then you put a four to six-foot storm surge then you have real problems in downtown. a little less storm surge to the north in the carolinas. north carolina only one to three but you see the problem. you see what's happening here. this is now gathering -- halfway off the coast so half the storm is gaining strength, the other half isn't gaining strength. i won't say losing strength but isn't gaining and this center of this hurricane went right over cape canaveral and decided to

you know, miguel standing in charleston -- oh, is chad there? chad, what are you seeing? what is the forecast now? >> the forecast is somewhere around 2:00 landfall, likely north of charleston. and that might be some good news for charleston, but bad news for places up there along the grand strand, because that's where the biggest surge may be. but we have this charleston issue, which honestly i heard what he said, he kind of broke up. charleston can flood on a sunny day with a king tide. but all of a sudden, if you get up to high tide and push a hurricane into charleston, you get significant flooding. and we're going to have the rain. the rain is all the way up even into virginia right now. tropical storm over the gulf stream. the very warm water of the gulf stream. and i said this last hour, the same gulf stream that kept fiona so strong all the way up into atlantic canada and up into newfoundland and nova scotia. right now, we have hilton head, gusting to 43 miles per hour. for now, the wind is not right onshore, it's down along the shore. so not piling the water in ju

and meteorologist chad myers is at the weather center in atlanta. let's go first to randi kaye in southwest florida, where people are getting ready, randi. >> reporter: yeah, they certainly are, john. we're in downtown punta gorda, florida. you see here people have started to board up their businesses here in downtown. they also have put some sandbags down. that's because people here, there is a real culture of preparedness. they remember what happened here in 2 04 with hurricane charlie when it chewed through this area. that was supposed to go to tampa, might a right turn and plowed through punta gorda. they have been stocking up on gasoline, stocking up on water and certainly up and down this street they have been putting up boarding along their shops. the story with hurricane charlie was wind. the story and the concern with hurricane ian, of course, is water and storm surge. they're expecting a 4 to 7 foot storm surge here in the punta gorda area. they have four shelters opening this morning at this hour here. they can hold about 4,000 people. bu

chad is all over that for us. more than 15 million people in florida are expected to feel the impact of the hurricane. more meme people along the west coast are boarding up homes right now. carlos suarez is live in gulfport, florida, which is just outside of st. petersburg. how are people there preparing for this? >> yeah, so folks out here, businesses are getting ready for this potential impact with hurricane ian. now just a few minutes ago we learned that another 90,000 residents in hillsborough county, that is the tampa area, are being told they'll have to evacuate. so now we have two evacuation orders that are mandatory over in hillsborough county and two mandatory evacuations here in pinellas county. in gulfport, a lot of the businesses again they're getting ready. this one restaurant on the corner here, though, they are still open. they can serve you some food out here on outdoor dining but you couldn't eat inside because their putting up plywood ahead of the potential track this way is that storm surge. we'

chad myers is tracking the storm. chad, we're talking about all of the computer models, the various paths. what are they telling us right now? >> they're getting more organized even though there are five or so different models that we look at. the ones that the american model was really way out in the middle of the gulf of mexico. that was last week. the european model was in the atlantic ocean, 700 miles away. now all of that has calmed down and narrowed down to about a 100 wide strip where not that much air, what a pretty picture as long as you doan have to deal with this. this is the hurricane. the visible picture from the sky. this is what it looks like when you talk about the hot towers. the big thunderstorms around what could be and likely later today an eye. the storm is now breathing. it is sucking air into it from the surface and it is blowing it up to those towers and out of the top and that is what we call a breathing, living, growing hurricane. 140 miles per hour to the west of the keys an also to the west
