chad meyers, appreciate that. he'll be joining us again momentarily.let's go to one of those mid-atlantic states, maryland. annapolis, specifically. that's where we find our a thth jones. we know that early voting has been suspended. people were excited to be voting on a saturday. not today. what else is taking place? >> that's right, it's been canceled for tomorrow. we're here in annapolis, one of those places particularly prone to flooding because it's so low. it just started raining here a few minutes ago and the wind is picking up, but this is one of many communities up and down the eastern seaboard that is preparing for hurricane sandy. >> annapolis resident kim kimball is hoping the sandbags she's collecting here will protect the museum where she works from rising waters. >> that's the one most vulnerable, because it's closest to the water. when it comes up, it will flood the basement. it's just one of the problems with living in the city in front of water. >> reporter: she's been through this drill several times. her friend jack is a novice. >>

chad meyers still with me now. chad, do you have a question for george? >> what i was mentioned earlier about how irene didn't hit new york city very hard, it didn't hit new york city very hard because it got the stuffing out of it when it hit north carolina. irene really devastated parts of that outer bank. it's still fragile, the sea grass not back where it should be, so any type of surge will quickly erode that beach again. it takes a few years for all that seal to come back and protect it. george, are you expecting that water to come over that barrier island and into the sound behind you? >> reporter: there is a real concern, chad, about the storm surge on this area where we are. obviously 4 to 6 feet, that will cause some flooding and it will get over the water. there is a temporary bridge that was washed out from irene. people are worried about that bridge. there is a temporary bridge there now. they're worried about what will happen as we continue to see the ocean push up. they're also worried about all the water, chad, that gets pushed into the so

chad meyers, thank you so much.ff to new jersey right now where the governor, chris christie, spoke a short time ago about hurricane sandy. he said his state is indeed bracing for the worst. we're in seabright, new jersey. it's definitely very windy. you don't have the rain yet, but what are they bracing for? what are they expecting? >> actually, it did start to rain a little bit ago and the winds are picking up. check out the atlantic ocean. the atlantic is really fierce. the winds picked up steam there, but believe it or not, this is still low tide. high tide is coming in in a few hours at 9:00 p.m. the sheriff expects the water to move up much more forward. you see how the beach erosion is happening here. much of the beach is gone here. he expects that to move even forward. the town is not far away to my left. they've been boarding up their storefronts, putting sandbags out. their concern is behind those buildings that you see is the strusberry river at high tide this morning even came forward three to four feet,

and chad meyers with an update moments away.ll force has gotten closer but you would not know it. the wind is whipping and slamming out power and more is expected with sandy endo. sandy, a lot of people are concerned about you, and we have said you are okay, but many people who are there are in harm's way where you are, and the mayor said to evacuate, get out. >> absolutely, don. a lot of people have heeded that warning here in ocean city. last time we spoke, the winds have picked up and the rain is certain certainly copping down. we heard a crash, and some kind of glass. you can take a look at what happened here. the wind just knocked down the glass globe protecting that light fixture here, and you can see it down on the ground sh shattered in pieces, because i mentioned in the last hour or so, the wind has picked up here, and the rains are coming down constantly all day long, and the real issue for this area is the storm surge. you have been talking about that on the air for quite some time, and it is a real issue here, becaus

san dirks ch sandy, chad meyers is here, and he may want to tell us more about the information we got at the top of the hour. >> while sandy feels okay, but did you feel the squall about 30 minutes ago, did it ever materialize? >> yes, chad. your words are ringing in my ears, because when you said that the squalls are coming, we definitely feel them and see them. when we are inside, we look outside of the window, and we have a the wind blowing in the wind. clearly, that is something that everyone is looking out for here. they have had a mandatory evacuation order in effect for downtown ocean city, and some people in the hotel have been hunkering down, and other residents who are going to ride this out have been warned to really stay inside. so, clearly we have seen a light blow out here, and the wind gusts picking up a little bit. but again like other hurricanes, usually, those squalls come and go, and the rain stops and the wind dice down, but not in this case, because it is nonstop just gathering in this area. >> are you still very cold? >> it is cold. you know, it is unusual, don a

chad meyers is here now. the storm is massive. >> the dome will make a large storm surge.rd charlie, franciss, gene, ivan, in the hurricane in the deep south, it is cold. get wet and wind blows 60, doesn't matter what you have on, the wind blows through everything and you're cold, but it's not a tropical storm anymore it is transitioning to the hybrid this cold air that's been over the eastern part of the plains, moving to the east is now getting sucked into this storm, entrained. now we have the moist chaurnd the heat that was the hurricane and the cold air coming together that's the hybrid that we talked about that we knew was going to come.the cold air coming togeth that's the hybrid that we talked about that we knew was going to come. it will eventually come bang at us from the east. the storm will come in from the east. here is the storm, talk by talk, we call it tick tock. sunday, 9:00. where we are now. most of the winds still offshore. we have 40, 50, 60-mile-an-hour gusts all along the coast from atlantic city southward all the way down to hampton roads. so the mo

chad meyers joins us now. vat of popcorn in front of the television set. >> i sat right here. >> for anybody who is watching, they hear red bull and they think this is an evel kinevel kind of thing. >> no one knew that a man could fall from space, literally hit 833 miles per hour and then hit the atmosphere below, slow down, survive it and land literally -- watch this, watch this -- he hit the ground, as we say, running. we kneat this point he was completely fine. he knew he was in trouble. at one point he was in the big spin, couldn't get out of it, didn't know what to do finally fought that spin. as you spin around, all the blood wants to go to your head or feet. all of a sudden you can get too much pressure, the exact opposite of what fighter pilots get into when they're pulling positive g and all the blood wants to get out of their ahead. this is the opposite of what felix was feeling yesterday. he did not break the free fall time record because he went so fast. he pulled the chute at about 7,500 feet. the

chad meyers is joining us now with the latest forecast. >>> it's still going to be downgraded to a tropicalt you cannot let your guard down. that is expected. it's also expected that when it gets back over the warmer water and starts to combine with the storm already in the northeast, you know how cool it is, those two things will clash. that clash will enhance the hurricane, and it will become that super storm. we call it a hybrid because it's warm and cold. as it's a hurricane, it's all warm inside, back here it's cold, when they clash, it's, i guess, like trying to put vinegar and oil together. they want to celebrate. they clash, and the storm will blow up, it's called a bomb, sometimes they're called bombs, nor'easters, coastal storms, this is not starting as a storm from the plains, it's starting as a hurricane and combining with the storm from the plains. the models are all over from boston to hampton roads, and there's a big difference depending on how far it goes north. the longer it stays in the water, the bigger it will be. if it's going to new york city, it will be a bigger storm
