i want to talk to chad meyers about supplies and safety when you travel out.pdate us if you hear anything throughout the show. chad meyers, that's something you can probably weigh in on really well because people who go out in cold weather, maybe aren't used to it, should know that there are very small things you can do to actually save your life in the event that something like this can happen? >> the biggest thing you can possibly do if you go out on the trip is to make sure your gas tank is full. that's the most important thing. you will use that fuel to start the car, to warm the engine, to warm yourself. this is a large family in a vehicle. they can all keep warm inside that vehicle. make sure your cell phone is charged as well. and something i just came up with this, not that long ago, i'm thinking how would they find a silver and black jeep that might be covered up with a little snow. the best thing you could possibly do is go out and buy a $2.99 blue tarp. blue tarp. why blue? because when you see the police coming, you see those blue lights, that's no

for more on what caused it and what is coming for christmas, let's check in with chad meyers.his has been a crazy december. yesterday many around the country including me in baltimore, it was like spring, but not for long? >> not for long. it is just outside your door. it has been warm up and down the east coast. the jet stream has been up into canada. it has been cold in the west but not in the places along i-95 in the past couple days. we will see this entire system go away as this cold front slides on by. this jet stream moves to the east and is it going to push all of that warm air and it will be gone. we are going to change this warm to cold and significantly colder. we have temperatures right now in parts of the dakotas that are approaching 25 degrees below zero with the wind chill. there is 27 below in fargo and guess where that is moving? to the south and east moving through new york and philadelphia and d.c. you were 70 degrees a couple days ago. the morning low in 36 hours will be around 20. that is a 70-degree shift, john. >> that's a big shift. >> how about those o

chad meyers is over at the cnn weather center. chad, when will the next storm hit?ow bad is it going to be? >> it will hit tonight. it's not going to be as big of a storm as we had over the weekend. but this is a lake effect storm, as well from woodford, vermont, 18 inches, connecticut over five, even central park had over 5 inches of snow with the last storm. and this storm is going to bring in cold air, down from north. this is a clipper storm that's coming in next. so a lot of these numbers you're seeing now will be the same type of numbers that we'll see throughout the rest of the week. here comes the snow across the lakes. we're seeing some snow right here. i can is it show you where it is coming across wisconsin up here across the u.p. of mirren gan and down toward chicago. it gets more organized tonight. and then it develops into something more sinister as it gets close to the ocean. picks up some ocean moisture and then tries to dump it along the berkshires maybe even parts of western new jersey and even into parts of upstate new york along the catskills. in

our meteorologist chad meyers will be joining us in a moment with the forecast. let's go to cnn's row sal flores first. she's watching the comings and goings out there on the new jersey turnpike. what's going on out there, rosa? >> wolf, up with of the things we're dealing with is low visibility. so all the drivers out there using their low beams, there is precipitation in certain areas so they're using the windshield wipers and it's in the 30s. they're also cranking up the heat. let me set the scene for you. you can see that visibility is low. the clouds are low. so drivers are being very careful out there. you're looking at the new jersey turnpike. traffic is moving at a pretty good clip right now. the office of emergency management tells us they're dealing with two things, the southern part of new jersey, ponding and flooding. and the northern parts of the state, they're dealing with snow, sleet, ice on the roads. so it can be treacherous. the department of transportation said they were preparing for the absolute worst. they have about 2,000 pieces of equipmen

chad meyers counts down the top ten. >> 2013 was quite a year weatherwise.o the top ten weather stories right now. we'll start at number ten in mexico. twin hurricanes hitting that country, one from the gulf of mexico, the other from the pacific. five billion in damage, more than 100 people killed in flooding. to south dakota, 12 days into autumn. we're looking at four feet of snow, 70-mile-per-hour winds. 20,000 cattle were killed in this storm as ranchers were caught off guard. now to the northeast. the nor'easter a big storm back in february. 3-mile-per-hour winds at one point, but the pressure was equal to a category 2 hurricane. now to arizona where the wildfires struck. lightning strike north of phoenix created this wildfire. it grew to 6,000 acres. the granite mountain hotshots were sent in, the wind shifted directions on them and blew the fire right back at those firefighters. 19 died that day. that's the largest loss of life from firefighters since 9/11. to east asia right here. big dome of high pressure, very populated area here, shanghai into sham

for more on the weather we have our meteorologist chad meyers standing by at the cnn severe weather centere national mall here in washington. the evening commute, what is it shape up like? a lot of folks didn't even go to work today because the federal government was, for all practical purposes, shut down, chris. what's going on? >> why there would be any major problems with the evening commute. the sun's coming out here. the ground's already starting to dry up. it stopped snowing a few hours ago and when you think about all the federal worker who's were told to stay home today, that causes a ripple effect in this area. here in the washington area, a lot of private companies use the federal government sort of as a template. if the government's closed, a lot of companies say we're going to close down for the day, too. the schools are going to close. so you don't have very many, many people out on the road today. i know we didn't get any accumulation here in downtown d.c. there was a little bit more out in the suburbs but there was a lot of fear on the part of this storm mostly based on what

chad meyers, what's behind it all? >> this is a huge storm, a low pressure in the north sea.his is a biggie. the pressure of this storm is equal to a category 3 hurricane. no kidding. 941 pressure and there's another storm coming in two more days. two storms for the uk and for wales. this is a big effect here. we are going to have waves of 40 to 50 feet along this coast, the west coast of from wales all the way back down toward the uk. a little bit farther away from london. we're not going to get the significant action in london. wind gusts of 0 miles per hour. think about that when you push the waves against the rocky shores. we'll see rainfall and snow in the higher elevations just north of dublin and north of glasgow, the wind, as well. this is wind gusts tonight. there are a lot of planes on the way to this area for tonight's landing. we have 60-mile-per-hour winds in london. i don't believe we'll get them all on the ground when you have winds like that. this is the flight explorer. planes on the way over to america at this point in time. later on they go the other direct

let's get the forecast now, chad meyers is joining us now.re is the the front right now, where is it heading. >> moving through oklahoma on it's way to texas, wolf. eight in denver, 26 in guyman, oklahoma. so the could air is just rolling through oklahoma right now and that's the problem. there's not really a storm right now, it's just cold air moving south. and then later on this week, thursday night and friday, warm air will try to go on top of that cold air. it will be 28 in dallas and it will start to rain. there is no place in the world that can handle that. there will be millions of people without power from this storm, wolf, north texas. it is turning rain into cold air. it's cold at the surface, and it rains through. if it hits you and you can hear it or feel it, that's sleet. by the time it gets to the east coast, it's gone. there will be inches of this stuff across oklahoma, arkansas, this is all ice, half an inch at least, building up on trees and powerlines and those will come down. a foot of snow from arkansas to kentucky. it all
