cnn meteorologist chad meyers has the answer. >> fred, here's how it works.n amazing beach, you have an amazing beach day, nice waves out there to go play in. the problem, the waves are a little too big. and there are sandbars offshore. those sandbars and those waves create a hazard, called a rip current. not immediately, but when water piles over the sandbars that are offshore, eventually the water gets slightly higher close to the shore and wants to run away from the shore to balance out the ocean. and if it comes in and comes in, and you don't flow where it's going to break because you never know where it's going to break, some point the erosion's going to take place as the water rips out and it's called a rip current. so the water's coming out maybe five miles per hour straight out into the ocean somewhere if you're caught in this, you're sent out to the ocean as well. the problem is, your body, because i've been in one, your body all it wants to do is turn around, swim back toward shore. you want to get back as fast as you can becauses you know the water

we're monitoring the situation with meteorologist chad meyers. what's up, chad?stronger, getting windier at the core. that's not good news because it wasn't forecast to get this much bigger till tomorrow morning. up to 50 miles per hour right now. gusts to around 60. there is the central dense overcast we call it. doesn't haven't an eye because it isn't a hurricane. there is the radar bringing some showers to the florida peninsula. the story won't be the showers. there will be lightning with it, as well. it's going to be the rip current. the rip currents that this is going to make all the way up the east coast. from here with the onshore flow like this blowing water on shore. and then that water has to go out and it finds its way over or through a sandbar and those are where the rip currents are the most dangerous. this storm runs up the east coast. it is forecast right there to be a 90-mile-per-hour storm. that's the latest 5:00 advisory. not 80 anymore, 90 miles per hour. skirting or skimming at least through parts of north carolina. but all along the coast, th

i'll speak with north killer carol's governor, but first let's go to meteorologist chad meyers. >> right where our reporters are, all of the way down to surf city which is just to the north and northeast of wilmington in north carolina. this is the new projection for where we think arthur's going to go. arthur is now up to a 70 mile per hour storm. last hour it was only 60, hurricane hunters finding stronger winds than 60 to hurricane center made the numbers higher. 70 miles per hour now. you can believe this is the eye right there of the storm and it's had an eye for quite some time today, but now that eye is what we call breathing. literally it's suck air down at the surface and rising it up through the eye wall and expanding or expelling that air at the higher elevations and making those cirrus clouds blow off of the now increasing in strength hurricane, soon to be hurricane, the hurricane center saying within 12 hours this will be a category 1 hurricane. the danger is for north carolina, parts of south carolina as well. there will pounding surf and there will be waves 6 to 12 feet ta
