let's go back to our chad myers at the cnn center. there are hundreds of people who are stranded in a highway whiteout. chad, what are we looking at? >> part of the storm system that's a lake-effect event president. that usually happens in buffalo of south of buffalo or cleveland. this is lake huron. lake huron with a wind out of the northwest dumps snow right to the east of sarnia, ontario which is northwest of detroit. and for hours yesterday, literally 28 hours, the snow came down so hard, the wind was blowing so hard it was simply a whiteout. for a while when this is first starting the police said get off the highway, highway 402. it's a big, big intersection, basically a u.s. interstate that goes from port huron over to buffalo. it would be a big cut-across if you didn't want to go through cleveland, kind of a shortcut across. they said get off the highway, it's closed. get into the little highways. they dumped people onto smaller highw highways. then the whiteout continued and they couldn't move. they couldn't move for in some s

from washington to the cnn severe weather center and my colleague here, chad myers bad weather all over for days on end we've been focusing east of the minneapolis minneapolis weather. that's where the cold air, ice was, this is all changing now. the low is now in the west. the east will be okay, compared to what we had at would vginia beach. that does not look like a beach day. it was icy and snowing and sleet and freezing rain. you put freezing rain down on anything, which means rain that comes all the way down to the ground and then freezes when it hits the ground, there's not much you can do when you're driving on that. thanks for our affiliates in newport news, hampton rhodes. we push that weather off the east coast and bring this moisture surge into the west. so from san francisco right on down to sacramento, even down to l.a., this is where the weather is today. if you can get to the ski resorts around reno and tahoe, you will see feet of snow in the next couple days, and this is not -- i can't even tell you how much you'll see at the highest of high elevations. there will be alm
