chad myers is upstairs in our weather center. reynolds, what are you seeing?ow widespread is the damage? >> what we're seeing is we are actually situated on a small hill overlooking part of the subdivision. as far as i can see, you've got homes or what is left of these homes just demolished. i know there's been congestion stur as to whether these were tornadoes or straight line winds. i can tell thaw i've been in television meteorology for almost 20 years. this is signature marks of tornadoes. one thing we're seeing is we're also hearing something. the sirens happen and you can hear the chainsaws behind me. and what we have in clay, center point, oakville, across seven counties in alabama is plenty of damage. they are trying to clear out these roads. a lot of these back streets so emergency vehicles can get back and not only at the cleanup but to also look for more people. we have two fatalities. earlier we were telling you about a 6-year-old boy who lost his life in clay and schools here in jefferson all closed today, understandably, as this happened last nig

i want to bring in our own chad myers. s a really tough story to tell looking at those pictures. so much grief. take us back. what do we know about the conditions that were around when this accident happened. >> unlike the fire, we just looked at in california where the smoke was going up and blowing away. this smoke was trapped near the surface due to what's called an inversion. the inversion in florida is actually air that's cooler at the surface, warmer just a little bit aloft that will not allow the smoke to go away. this smoke from the fire went right over i-75. it was in the middle of the night. it was already dark. people were driving in the smoke that they couldn't see until their highlights were right there as they drove into the smoke, there were already cars crashed inside the smoke screen. so cars continued to pile in one after another with these now more fires involved as these vehicles caught on fire. >> and people i've spoken to on the team for the show are saying this interstate, people drive really fast on

chad myers joins us with a closer look on what's unfolding. i suspect this investigation is only just beginning. >> it really is, wolf. people ask me all day how can there be a hole in the left side and yet leaned over and fell on the right side. that's because the captain did turned ship back towards shore, and you kind of lean when the care turns to the left -- the boat listed right there and literally fell over onto its side with a huge hole on the bottom. the captain said we've lost power, it's because the engine room probably got flooded. it came very close to the show, hit a rock, only wen one more mile. this being one full hour, as it turned to the left, the entire boat fell over i want to show you the size of the rock. there's the rock right there. now, this right here, wolf, that's the waterline. this dark area, that's below water. this may only be 5 feet, maybe 3 feet below the waterline where this rock was actually located. so clearly no sense of say too close to shore, no matter about that at all. there it is from the view. this bo
