meteorologist chad myers is here at the cnn severe weather center. as we hear about the devastation this morning, at this moment tell us who should be worried now. >> parts of kentucky, tennessee, mississippi, alabama and even here in georgia. and in virginia and the carolinas later tonight. the problem is, they've been asking me all day, will this be as bad of a night as it was last night. i said, you know what? there will be as many tornadoes tonight but will towns get in the way? in the weather office we don't say that tornadoes hit towns. towns get in the way of the tornado. because that tornado is going to go that way, anyway. will something be in the way of its path? and last night 170 miles per hour, tornadoes were just ravaging parts of southern illinois. 16 of them at least. probably still more than that because they'll be out looking at them. now look at this. john, 750 miles across from east to west. 670 or so miles from north to south. that's the area of severe weather that we're worried about. this is the area that got hit last night but

chad myers joining us how. how much snow are they expecting?feet. >> i've been been tweeting out some places will get 40 inches. no question. no question. evergreen, as you get up in to the slightly higher elevations they call the front range, denver at between 6 and 10 inches right on the ground. still snowing in many spots. let's me show you the ireport that we got from evergreen overnight and this morning. look at the video. you think that's only about ten inches until they pan off of the railing. and they show you the car down at the bottom of the deck. and you can hardly -- the snow is almost up to the middle of the doors. so know still coming down. that will take amounts shoveling. the good news is that it is so very light, people ask me all the time, if they get an inch of rain, how much snow would that be. if you use the normal progression, you think about seven inches of snow to one inch of water. but this snow has been 11 inches of snow to one inch of melted water. it's been light and fluffy. but jamestown, california, you were the wi

let's get the latest, chad myers is watching what's going on. the heartbreaking to see it, not a whole lot of warning. what's going on now? >> i think the most frightening part is that it happened in the middle of the night. those tornado warning sirens that are outside, they're not made to wake you up. they're made to tell you to go inside. people were already inside. they died in their homes, in their beds because they either didn't have it, didn't have a noaa weather radio. especially in the southeast, it happens every spring, these storms keep going in the nighttime. you talk about nebraska, oklahoma, about sunset the storms die off. in the southeast, especially right here in the harrisburg, in illinois, kind of the south -- i know it's midwest, but they did not stop. even at 5:00 this morning they were still rotating with significant tornadoes on the ground. wolf, i just want to give you an idea of this storm. from where the snow is, to the east and to the west, we're talking 1600 miles. from where the storms noises are in louisiana, all th

let's bring in chad myers. where is it located exactly where this collision occurred? would be north of new orleans. but at that point in time the river goes west to east so it's 50 miles west of new orleans the way the river meanders. this was a big collision. a double-hulled, which means one on hull on the inside, one hull on the outside, skeep keeping the oil secure inside and it pierced the double hull with a 10 foot by 5 foot gash. 150,000 gallons of oil on board but the gash was above the water line so not that much oil clearly came out. the deal is now this oil is in the river. and people get their drinking water out of the river. there are fish, wildlife, plants, waterfowl in the river and now we have this oil in the river. here's new orleans, and meandering mississippi river. i was showing you how it goes more west to east at this point in time. there's reserve and a big bend in the river here. so much barge traffic in this bend. you can see some barges are parked out there or just anchored out there. what happened here, we have a crane barge with a crane on i

chad myers is here to talk about that.ell us about what is an incredible experience? >> i don't think anybody up on land understands what the danger is involved here, to take that kind of pressure on any vessel, put it down there with a man inside or more than one man inside that is going to be the challenge. that's why they're not going all the way down to the bottom every time. they are doing successfully deeper dives to make sure this holds up. it's basically a big ball, like a gerbil ball. you put the gerbil in it, he runs around. that's what it looks like. as it floats down there sinks down to the bottom, they'll be testing this water tightness. literally it has to be water tight. almost like taking 8,000 elephants, standing it on top of a car. that's the pressure you'll get at 38,000, 37,000, 35,000 feet down there. this is deeper than mt. everest down. in 1960, there was somebody down there for a few minutes this is something where -- why do we care? we could prove that there's obviously life on other planets. if yo
