let's go straight to our meteorologist chad myers. >> chad, for viewers who are just tuning in, update them on what has happened over the past hour or so. >> what has happened as two tornadoes, one going up 35w and one going up 35e. you have to understand, from san antonio to austin there's one interstate called interstate 35. north of dallas, there's one interstate going to oklahoma, but right at dfw, part of the interstate goes to ft. worth and part of the interstate goes through dallas and they split. two tornadoes simultaneously, one going up 35e and one going up 35w were making damage on the ground. right now we still have one storm here to the south of dallas proper, probably headed toward mesquite with a tornado warning on it. so this isn't even over for the dallas wort worth area. you called it like toys, i was watching this live, wolf and it felt like i was watching my son throw a train around. that's what it felt like. these are thousands of pounds, 5,000, 10,000 pound trailers, not the tractor part, but the trailers being throne into the sky and that's what it looked like, t

we're working with chad myers, meteorologist, as we're covering this live. at least one tornado on the ground at this moment in time in t, in the dallas ft. worth area. here's what we know so far. we've. watching the tornadoes emerge and the damage afterwards which we'll show you in just a moment. but i can tell you, dfw, this was from a moment ago, dfw has grounded all the flights, also heavy rail transportation, trains. that is shut down as well. people are in prevention and also response mode. you see the bright flashes of light. this is some sort of tractor trailer complex. they're parked. you can see one after the other after the other. they're tossed about. you see this darker color tractor trailer, two two of them in the air. we watched this live on cnn. once we saw that, we showed you live pictures of the aftermath. broad daylight, you see these tractor trailers, we get information from you about where this was. this was southeast of the metro plex area. just imagine, these things are thousands of pounds, thousands. just tossed about. looks to me lik

chad myers reporting for us. thanks so much. >> you're welcome. >>> joining us now on the phone is jonathan cooke, who saw two tornadoes, as i understand, touch down. jonathan, thank you for being with us. i understand you're safe now, but tell us if you would, what you saw. >> yeah, this morning, i was in the bank, caught off guard a little bit. had no warning, and saw lightning strike about 50 yards across the street from the bank. and immediately after got some thunder, and then lightning struck again. thunder came, and i said, we need to look out the window and see what's going on. we looked out the window and about that time, hail started coming down. just a little bit bigger than a nickel. so i ran out of the bank, hopped in my truck, and ran across the street to the rest stop, gas station, with people were taking cover under the pumps, and about that time, a guy pulled up with inweather service truck, opened his door, and said, listen to the weather service woorb veto take cover. and a girl said, look up.

chad myers, how far into tornado season are we? we have just started. >> in fact, mr. wolf blitzer asked me that the other day. he said well, you, are we -- aren't we about done? no, sir, we just started. tornado season happens in america when the cold air from the winter gets pushed back by the warm air of summer. and sometimes the cold air pushes back and says hey, not so fast. this is what we had today. we had cold air mixing with warm air. they mix like vinegar and oil. they don't want to be together. as the warm, moist air goes up, storms are created. thunderstorms that go up can sometimes begin to spin. those storms that spin can put down toerpds, almost like an ice skater, a figure skater going slowly in the middle. will do a very quick spin on the one leg with the arm against her body. it brings the tornado down to one point. that happens all the way from about february in the southern sfiets all the way into may and june in nebraska. it can even happen as late as july and august up into calgary and alberta and even into sa

promise you that had they had choices and time, and they were able to -- >> i want to bring in chad myers, chad's got a question for you. >> tell me a little bit, you talked about what was going through the pilot's mind. describe a pilot who knows his plane is not going to fly anymore. what's the thought process, and i'm sure you think about four minutes worth of things in about four seconds. what is that process like when you're in a plane? >> it's one of the most unique processes in the world. i have to say in my case, i'm long since being a navy pilot, but it shaped the rest of my life because it put every challenge into sequential order and in this case, in milliseconds. so the training, the navy pilot training is issue based. every flight they spring something on you so that you have to decide and take your queues, each set of those decisions that you reach draws you to an inescapable conclusion. this is my decision, i must act. if you look back at the "top gun" movie, one phrase in there, up there we don't have time to think, we have to react. you are schooled and trained to react p

the issue, chad myers, we're talking to the woman from the conservancy in massachusetts.hey deal with stranded dolphins often. they're hoping option number one, best option is that this dolphin goes on its own and you can see the guy, the diver sort of flapping his hands. is that the bridge? >> no. that's the south end. that's actually where there's water coming in because the tide is rising. they need to get this dolphin to the right of the screen and up almost half a mile to the warren avenue bridge. i think once the dolphin gets its sense of direction, it will be all right. they want to go from left to right left to right and the dolphin thinks they're playing with it. >> you know, it's fascinating and they're tapping and they'ric maing noise and what the expert a little while ago pointed out is these dolphins have an incredible, incredible hearing and perhaps that's what they're hoping, these sort of, you know, tactics, making a little bit of noise hoping the dolphin will spin around and move in the right direction. >> this dolphin is around people a lot. you can take

i want to bring in max carey and chad myers is standing beside me as well.alk me through some of your initial thoughts. when you look at how the plane crashed, what's your first impression? >> there are two flight regimes that are unforgiving. one is takeoff and one is landing, pilots have time to make decisions and plan and sort of orchestrate what they're going to do, except on takeoff and landing. my first thought was first of all, thank god no one was killed. and those pilots went through a thought process that was programmed into them from the day they started flight training. check this, check this, check this, that will all go through the pilot's head as fast as possible and make a life-or-death decision. in this case, after checking all that you are queues was after flying, they had to exit the airplane. ergo the -- >> where the plane came from was about 2 1/2 miles so it would not be flying this kind of at altitude. and how many seconds would they have had to make a decision to eject? >> you're right on, it's all about seconds and they were not high

let's go now to cnn's chad myers in atlanta. ad, you've been watching this closely and i've been keeping up with your reporting. >> yeah, joe. you know what? a very populated area for the naval air station to be right in the middle of virginia beach here, the big boardwalk. everybody knows about virginia beach, and then the rest of the area called hampton roads, but you have fore folk, and chesapeake and much more populated than when the naval air station oceana was installed. let's fly you through what happened today. we'll get you right to where virginia beach is. we'll start this all over again so you can get an idea for where the crash happened to the beach, one mile. from the end of the runway to the crash, two and a half miles. so not a lot of time at 200 and something miles per hour, this plane's going about 200 knots as it left here, run way 5r, taking off toward the beach and leaving the naval air station. at some point, something catastrophic happened here where the pilot at some point knew that this plane wasn't going

chad myers, okay, what happened to spring? please explain. >> it left the south.this morning. temperatures in the 40s and even 30s across the carolinas and georgia. but it was snowing up north into new york, pennsylvania, west virginia. some spots over a foot of snow. laurel summit there, that is in summit county, pennsylvania, if you're in like somerset area, that's where they picked up about 6 inches of snow. but it's been very windy. the airports are slow. some airports don't appear to be slow, but some cancellations are coming through where every plane is on time if it's flying. the ones that are canceled aren't on time because naer not going anywhere. so kind of get ready for that if you're traveling across the northeast. it's a big trough of low pressure in the east. almost, almost call it a nor'easter, but because we're so much now into warmer air or into spring, call it a coastal low. it ran up the coast and it dumped all of that snow back out to the north and to the west of that area and there you go. we're still piling up snow because in many spots it is

chad myers and michael holms from cnn international to talk about w45hat happened here. an 8.6, very, very large. significantly smaller than the 9.1 in 2004. five times less energy put out with this earthquake. but let me show you why -- with an 8.6 there would have been a significant tsunami. it didn't happen because it wasn't a thrusting fault. two 4 x 4s. i just painted this one. two plates that slipped called a strike slip. you don't get what we had in 2004 where this plate went up, a mega thrust. it went up meters, like maybe tens of meters in some spots. that pushed up all the water. this is kind of basic geometry. the matter made a bubble, the bubble had to go out and that bubble -- >> how was it different than 2004? >> because you don't have any dirt or land or sea floor going up like we did, the only have it going sideways there wasn't the displacement of the land. the sea floor did not rise significantly and, therefore, the bubble did not get generated. >> is it a part of the world that is particularly vulnerable to this type of thing happening? >> oh, sure. th

. ♪ >>> your weather expert chad myers is joining us now.eathings. almost 900 now off of peru. do we know why this is happening? >> yeah, you know, we have dolphins coming on shore in the cade cod area. there are dolphins, almost 800 now that they've been counting have been washing up in the past couple of months along peru's current there. and here's what they look like. they are dead on arrival at the shore. they are literally not beaching themselves as we understand whales and dolphins sometimes do, but they are literally dead in the water and then the tide brings them up. people are saying what could possibly be going wrong here. noaa and some of the other fisheries are saying there must be some type of bacteria or some type of virus in the fish. in the mammals. they will know what is going on in the couple of weeks a as they literally dissect and figure out what's going on in a necropsy, almost like an autopsy for people. they'll figure out if it's a virus or something else. an environmentalist said hey, wait a minute, a couple of month

let's get more from chad myers. what is the latest? what's happening right now, chad?weather has moved off to the east rather significantly. kind of like a big broom that pushed all of the weather away. it's taking the humidity with it and taking the potential and pushing it into northeastern texas and northwestern louisiana and parts of arkansas. but let me back you up about, oh, i'll go five hours probably from now as we had two rotating supercell tornados, one in dallas county, one in tarrant county, one moving up i-35 and one -- w, and one moving up i-35 east. we had two tornados on the ground simultaneously about 30 miles, 40 miles away from each other. as they moved on up, the tornados were causing damage in here from cleburne back into burleson and even up toward arlington. pretty significant damage with this storm. the helicopters haven't got that far to the west because the weather was just bad most of the day but all the damage you've been seeing here is in the dallas county storm. i'll go ahead and move that out of the way. the storms did travel up to the no

our chad myers tracking it all from the severe weather center. what can you tell us? >> it looks like it was in norman, oklahoma. it was about 3/4 miles north of the stadium. through downtown and out towards the east of the city and up toward the lakes that are off to the east. the storm is still moving along i-40. we don't believe there is a tornado anymore with it. the storm mass stopped rotating. right in the middle of norman, this storm was rotating enough that a funnel came down, created a tornado and has created damage. there are calling for some barricades to stop people from driving on some of the roads. they are calling for some -- started saying there are minor injuries and areas of structural damage where roofs are off the building all together and off the apartment buildings. >> another storm out near chickasha. don't see anything rotating on it yet. we have spotters out there. we are watching all this. this person, vern carlson, driving, looking for the storm. we know where he is just to the east of chickasha. if we get any more information, we will certa

want to bring in chad myers. chad, what do we understand -- where is this guy? what kind of plane?ilot left from louisiana on the way to florida. going to be very careful here. as we know, the people -- the family members, the loved ones of the pilot have not been notified. the plane is fogged over, iced over according to two f-15 jets that have been flying alongside this plane trying to contact the pilot, trying to say, hey, what's going on? at this point in time the pilot is unconscious. he's been circling -- the plane has been circling on its own over the gulf of mexico for quite some time. we have a graphic. it's called gr-118, guys. we can put that on and show the circle. as it left louisiana and went over toward florida. the circle is on the bottom. almost like a plane circling because the airport is closed. just around and around and around. there you go. the pink circles there, around and around and around. the pilot was doing great on the way to florida and then some place somewhere in the middle of the flight became unconscious. whether the autopilot wasn't on or whatever
