chad myers to make sense of all this.us what this is and how it could impact our lives. >> the sun is now at the peak of its -- almost the peak of its 11-year cycle. it is active now. there are sunspots out there. there are streaming charged particles coming toward the earth. aurora borealis, beautiful pictures there. the greens and blues and reds in the southern hemisphere and in the northern hemisphere. what we could see with this, it hasn't happened yet but it's there, it's the boy with the balloon in one hand and the needle in the other hand. if the boy pokes the needle, like poking the sun, you would see an enormous flare come out. it's called a coronal mass ejection. you can look at sunspots but you must do it perfectly and not directly. through a telescope with a filter that's dark. you can look through a welder's mask. do not look at the sun directly even during the dark -- at sunset when it starts to get hazy, please do not still look at it directly. also solar flares. those flares could send a signal to the eart

let's turn to chad myers in cnn's weather center.ure looked it for a while. 13 acres burned just to the east of i-4. there's the brush fire right there, and epcop center only 2 miles away. magic kingdom maybe more six miles away here. but the smoke was all blowing to the southwest, not toward the theme parks, but right toward many of these hotels. so if you're driving to orlando thinking, hey, we've got a great hotel, it may not be a nonsmoking hotel tonight. it could be a little bit on the smokey side for sure. a couple things we're going to talk about here too is the potential for some weather coming in to the southeast that could help florida and the wildfires, gloria. >> so, well, is that the rain, the hurricane that's threatening the southeast? >> it's not a hurricane yet, but you're right on top of it. >> see. >> it could be a tropical storm. right now it is just an area of low pressure off the east coast that's really gathering some moisture, gathering some strength. and the forecast is for this thing to gather enough strength

chad myers joining me with additional details. what do you know?t to on the way over from there, and that's what they're doing now. they still had about a two-hour window to fly to charlotte, but because it's near bangor, that's the track. typically is track goes right over nova scotia and into the charlotte regional airport. because bangor is right there, they made a little diversion to the right and landed in bangor. we were watching this flight on our flight explorer and it did get down to 300, 400 feet and appeared to make a landing on our maps. clearly, i don't have any visual on this yet, but we'll have to see what happens with this plane and why this plane was diverted to that airport. just a small, little diversion to get to bangor, but it's obviously 2 1/2 shorters than going all the way to charlotte. >> ip to jump in with lizzie o'lea o'leary, our correspondent based in washington, d.c. lizzie, do you have any additional details on this and maybe what kind of aircraft this might be making a transatlantic flight? >> reporter: it's a 767, a

chad myers is watching all of this. it just issued the latest advisory. what did it say?urricane would make landfall around the west coast of mexico. here's manzanilla and puerto vallarta. somewhere in between those two towns making landfall in one of those towns as a near-category 2 hurricane. goes to 3 and slows down when it makes landfall. then, wolf, the problem is it stops, goes around and goes back out to sea. that stop and turn around time could cause severe flooding in western mexico. there could be a foot of rainfall and that could cause flash floolding and we saw what happened with irene and how much damage there, in pennsylvania by flooding, but not wind damage. sometimes flooding could be much worse. >> as soon as we know we're in the hurricane season, one of the things that went through my mind and a lot of political reporters, the republican national convention scheduled for tampa in the last week in august and that's the height of the hurricane season. what could happen if the storm were to hit that area? is the state ready? >> the state is ready. there's n

chad myers is joining us from atlanta.ccording to the japanese government, 70% of the debris sank after the tsunami. what do we think is going to wash up? >> millions of tons of stuff that's still out there. the lives of the people that were lost. there is japan, a very long trip around the eddies and the currents, things that were above water like that boat, like that fishing vessel that they sank a couple of weeks ago that were above water getting pushed by wind. now things that are kind of floating in the water moving along are now washing up in canada and eventually across the western portions of the u.s. let me show you the latest, a box, really a cargo box really. like you might see on the back of a truck. inside that box -- a harley-davidson motorcycle. that's kind of the part there, that white part. there is the motorcycle that had floated now all the way across the pacific. we know it was japanese because of that, look at the license plate. japanese writing on the plate, and now officials are looking to see if the

chad myers is here to talk about the asteroid and what it means to us.rous situation? what do we know about this? >> we knows a ter rouds, parts ofs a t s a teasteroids do hit every once in a while. this is in the asteroid belt to the outside of mars, no the going it hit earth. that's a good thing. that would be the next extinction because this is a big guy. vesta is the name and dawn, the spaceship, has been out there looking at this thing for a year. orbiting this thing. it is a large rock. at one point in time it was proposed it could be a planetoid or a dwarf planet. there's the dawn going around it and around it. we will find out if it has a layers. we think it has a mantle, an inner core, a crust. we are thinking parts of this broke off when another asteroid hit it and it broke off and did get to the earth and became meteors and they have been found on the earth, picked up, and examined. now we have the spaceship out there looking at this thing for a year and na sa is going to hae some big news for us. >> what else do we know about it already? >> i

chad myers, i am always concerned when i hear about a transatlantic flight that gets far enough into the flight that it has to complete its pond hopping. that's the case with this particular flight. it did not go back to paris. >> completed over 3,000 miles of its journey from charles de gaul gaulle. you would expect they would go straight to charlotte, but that's not the way planes fly across the atlantic. it's called the great arc, part of the great circle. here's france, the middle of the atlantic ocean, mid-atlantic ridge, green land, over the bay of fundi. that's where the dergs took place. it turned to the right, made a slight angle diversion, when we assume the f-15s caught up. earlier we didn't know anything about the f-15s. now this seems slight hi more sinister in the base. they wouldn't just take with this out for some person that had too much to drink in first class. there's a little bit mor going on here now. >> more to it. you and i were talking a while ago about the the fact it would have flown i think over newfoundland, a place where often times in a crisis a lot of f

i want to bring in chad myers to talk about this. are we seeing any end in sight? >> no, and the wind is going to be 35 to 45 miles per hour. so that's going to harmper, too. the wind was blowing from the south, now blowing from the west. that makes firefighters scramble around. they know where the defense is, they know which way the fire is moving and all of a sudden after the cold front it changes direction. believe this or not, back the middle of may, may 15th, a wildfire was started in new mexico because of a stray bullet. a ricocheting bullet, just the spark from a stray bullet was enough to start land on fire. only a 15-acre blaze before they caught it, but that gives you an idea of how dry it is. in fact, all four states here, the four corner states here, new mexico, colorado, all the way up here into utah and this would be the four corners where they all come together, 98% of those states, 98% of all land in those states have some type of drought going right now from the drought monitor i just looked at. there's the wind, 35, 45 miles per hour. even some gu
