>> let's bring in cnn meteorologist chad myers. ave been in the game nearly three decades, is this global warming we are seeing from a meteorological point of view, is there any other explanation. >> it's the prime suspect. i don't have one. maybe particulates in the air. the rain drops, the moisture can get on the drops and get bigger, but i will tell you what, i think sandy would have existed without global warming but the water is warmer. one degree warmer than in '70 that probably made the storm 10% stronger. doesn't sound like a big deal but if you take 10% and you realize if you double the wind speed from 20 to 40 miles per hour, you have raised the force of the wind by four times and then 40 to 80 and now you are 16 times where you were on 20-80. so 10% seems like a small number but it was enough of an increase to make the whole thing a superstorm. then you have to get in to was there a blocking high over greenland because there is no sea ice up there this year and that's another thing. without this blocking high -- >> let me

chad myers is joining us with new information about how folks are getting around some some of the difficult uptown is moving. you get down to 34th street and then below that and it's tough. i mean, i have looked at traffic and the lines are all red, which means cars are barely moving, but let's go uptown and look at the subways, the a, the 1 train all doing very, very well. if we gl farther to the south, 34th street is the cutoff. that's where nothing is really going south. there's no power south of here. you get across to the other side, you go over to brooklyn into queens, and all of a sudden you do have some traffic coming in going to three separate bus locations and the buses are taking people over to lower manhattan. there's another issue down here, the a-train down towards the rockaways. there's just iffing to be an issue here for a long time because that's what the train track looks like. there's just a sloop right in through here. there's no support. that bridge is gone, and there's so much debris. boats literally washed up on shore. come back over here to south ferry. we'll show yo

i want to bring in chad myers to talk about what is taking place. to a hospital official in the last hour or so. they said they had four patients that were brought in. they were going to be transferred to a facility to treat burn patients. what does that say to you about the expense of what has taken place on that rig? >> that was the west jefferson hospital we talked to. we now know that there are 11 people that have been medivaced to four separate hospitals. that's just coming off right now from a press conference that i just literally just left. there were 11 350e78 medevaced. nine people were actually transported to other plaid forms and other places away that were not injured. the two missing that were reported two missing, two dead from the coast guard. that's the same. those two people are the two missing, so officially not too two dead yet. still the two missing would be the back and forth from those two reports. we're going to see four area hospitals. now we're going to talk to them. the burn union sit there. everybody is worried about how

chad myers joins us with that. chad, how big is this thing? how bad? >> well, it doesn't look bad.y it's not a hurricane. we'll have winds maybe 30, 40, gusts of 50. but here's the deal, anderson. you guys are stuck in a pattern that has a big ridge in the west and a trough in the east, and when that happens, sometimes these lows will come over and all of a sudden run up the east coast. sometimes they will be one after the other. there could be more than one in a row. you are going to see winds that are still going to be gusty. the next thing you're going to see is temperatures continue to be cold as long as that trough stays right here. here's the european model. we showed you the models for the hurricane. this is not a hurricane, again, but it does have rain all the way from boston back to new york and maybe even western pennsylvania. you could get some of that snow. remember, this thing is six days away. a nor'easter is almost impossible to forecast properly 24 hours away. so you're going to have to let the forecasters get a handle on this. it is going to be cold. philadelphia,

chad myers is watching the rain, wind, and the snow that is coming.ly going to get it. how bad is it expected to be? >> there could be 20 inches of rain in spots. you put that up in the mountains and you're talking ten feet of snow and all of a sudden you have mudslides, snow slides, avalanches. it could be an ugly mess. you say a couple of days. i see four separate storms over the next 16 days hitting the same period. one storm out in the pacific, headed through san francisco and up to truckee. you don't go anywhere without the chains in your car. they are going to be chaining everything up and down there through the i-80 pass. there's the flood threat in the green because it's not going to be snowing there. there could be a foot of rain before it finally stops. we are seeing all of this purple area. that's only in the next 72 to 120 hours. it just keeps raining. it just keeps going. it just keeps going for the next week and a half. moisture is not going to stop. it's going to come on shore one storm after the next. 20 to 30 feet of waves. from orego

cnn meteorologist severe weather expert chad myers is taking a closer look. he's joining us now. ad? >> well, first of all, the storm surge with katrina was enormous. almost three times more of a wave or of a surge with katrina as bay st. louis was about 28 feet. manhattan island, downtown, the battery, had about 9.5 feet. haven't seen too many numbers higher than that. 9.5 feet moving into the city comparing to moving into the bay, obviously there's a town there and all the way do biloxi, it's the population density in new york city that is going to -- and in new jersey and connecticut, that is going to put this way up in the record books. katrina, $145 billion in damage. andrew, this is cost for adjusted inflation $43.5 billion. and looks like somewhere sandy will fall somewhere between katrina and into andrew. so probably number two on the scale for dollar damage. now, when it comes to deaths, it's disturbing, wolf, to see and hear how quickly the fatality number in the u.s. is going up. you know, you expect it to tick up. it's jumping. katrina though 1,833, rita at 119, ike 11

chad myers, who is watching the transportation situation. they open? how are people getting through? >> they're getting. they're slow, but they're getting. we have even some problems with la guardia still because of the flooded equipment that it has. la guardia, you know, to getting out of there, there was a ground stop earlier. getting better now. still people are laying on the floor. i saw lines to get in the tsa lines. that's how bad it's been. now, let's get down to the ground a little bit because this has changed significantly since i've been talking to you last. the brooklyn battery tunnel opened for at least some bus service. the a-train, though, back to the rockaway, still not open, and probably won't be for quite some time. this bridge system right through here kind of the causeway bridge to get the a-train to the rockaways was just a mess, and it still is going to be that way for a while. south of, let's say, about, i don't know, maybe just soho all the way down to south fery, these lines are still not working. the bus service, tho

our meteorologist chad myers is here to tell us how bad it could be. chad, we're hearing of freezing temperatures, what is going on here? >> freezing temperatures are really the problem. and then there is another storm, a coastal low. sometimes you can call them nor'easters, but this one doesn't qualify as a nor'easter just yet. we have a big rise in the jet stream here, where it is nice and warm in the west. then a dip in the jet stream in the east where all the cold air is allowed to come straight down. when this happens, don, sometimes lows can come over the top and run up the east coast of a coastal low and dump a bunch of snow this way or rain or wind. now, this isn't -- i wouldn't be talking about this, you wouldn't even put me on your show if we didn't have 5 million customers, that's more than 5 million people, that's 5 million households or businesses that don't have power in the northeast. and really can't afford to have any more cold air or any more rain or any more wind. the power lines are barely up there in some spots, trees are half knock

more from this from chad myers. tell us what causes this. what is this?hates from washing machines and laundry, from sewage that got dumped in, or from fertilizer, or just naturally that upwelling of very good water, very nutrient rich water from below got washed up at the top and the algae blooms on top. the biggest problem to swimmers and people the ammonia they create as they live on top of the watt. >> look as alarming. we know they closed the beach at least for a day. is it harmful to human beings, harmful to sea life? what does it do? >> it will give you an eye rash, red eyes. also could irritate your skin with at mothe ammonia but it do kill fish. uses all of the oxygen in the water and fish have to place to go. this wasn't huge like the ones in gulf of mexico, fish were able to swim from one side to the zbloother. >> how often does it happen? >> all the time. we don't see it in places that want to go swimming. we see it way out at the end of the gulf of mexico or the mouth of the mississippi goes out there. happens all the time. look like tomato s
