let's get to chad myers in the severe weather center. are there any current tornado warnings in the area? just one. gulfport, mississippi right along the gulf of mexico where the air is the most humid. we have watches which means they can happen anywhere from almost tennessee right on down to south florida and into the florida panhandle here. a couple storms already rotating on radar. no significant weather right now for tornadoes on the ground that i know of. but the potential is there all night long from central and northern mississippi, alabama, right on down even into, there you go, the florida panhandle. earlier today, pickens county into mississippi right through about macon, mississippi and into macedonia into alabama this is what rolled through here. this was a very large wedge-shaped tornado. one person was killed that we know of. power lines are down. trees are down everywhere from this big tornado. i would suspect, jake, this was probably an ef-3 tornado. at least 150 miles per hour. they are rare in the south but they are hap

so let's get straight to cnn meteorologist chad myers. at is tornado damage. certainly wind damage, the winds at the airport 60 miles per hour. over 30,000 people without power at this hour. the storm came over the lake across into kenner and down into new orleans proper and still moving down almost to about gretina right now. storm moving to the southeast about 30 miles per hour. right there is the rotation as it travels on eventually toward the northern parts of plaquemines parrish. damage has been reported but most wind damage, power lines down, trees down, 30,000 without poor. >> chad, give us that time window again. for folks down there when does the risk pass? >> the risk passes probably in the next 10 or 15 minutes. it's bell chase, it's gretna and moving away. this continues to push into plaquemines parrish. for you northern plaquemines parrish still to worry for another 15 to 20 minutes, take cover there now. >> all right. chad, thank you. everybody, heed the warning, stay safe. we'll monitor the situation afterwards. take a break

we're going to go to chad myers. chad, what can you tell us about this? been an ugly morning. hundreds of flights canceled, the rest delayed. over 500 flights at o'hare didn't even go out today. but the rain has finally movered away. six to eight inches across last well, even though the rain has slowed down, the south side still seeing rainfall. i could go on to traffic.com, this is traffic.com, shut down in places, eisenhower still shut down, so many places here under water. and one more problem we saw, a sinkhole on the south side, 9600 block here. look at this, the car here on the right was there, then all of a sudden that car ends up in the same hole that those other two cars are already in. authorities trying to figure out what's going on here, could it be something underground, maybe a water pipe, but most likely a lot to do with the water that came down from the sky in less than 24 hours. guys, back to you. >> all right, chad, thank you. of course, the sinkhole, when you see that video, only minor injuries. >> thank god for that. crazy. >> yes. sin

chad myers joins me now. , what's the latest on the areas that might be hit by tornadoes tonight? >> heading into the northern suburbs of atlanta, atlanta proper, all the way down to macon and for that matter, right on down to the gulf of mexico into florida. it's hard to show you the radar because the lightning, so many strikes, tens of thousands of strikes per hour, being plotted on top of that radar. so it just continues tonight for atlanta, georgia, on up even toward the northeast, into gainesville. i can't believe there's not a tornado on this storm north of alpharetta. i'm sure there's damage, whether it's straight line wind damage or tops of trees coming off. tell you what, there is a big storm there in the northern suburbs of atlanta, georgia right now, still moving toward cumming, georgia. montgomery, big storm to the south. you see the line with thousands of lightning strikes down to pensaco pensacola. the watch boxes you see here continue to indicate the presence of spin possibility until 4:00 in th

chad myers is in the cnn severe weather center with all the latest. chad, tell me what's happening. >> so many lightning strikes, piers, in the past hour, it's covering up, those lightning strikes are covering up the radar. hard to see what's going on. tens of thousands of strikes from cloud to ground. weather moving into atlanta, moving into montgomery, and this all across the southeast will play out tonight. the problem is now, it's dark and you're going to sleep. you need a noaa weather radio on tonight if you have one. if you don't, go out and buy one tomorrow. you have to think about this, piers. we should have had over 90 tornadoes in march. we had 17. there wasn't a spring in march. now we're making up for that. the weather is warm, the weather, the hot and the cold makes this, this was at least in my opinion from this view, a half a mile wide tornado, probably somewhere around 140 or 150 miles per hour at its core, knocking things down for miles. probably 30 or 40 miles. tomorrow, the weather service will go out there and confirm that that was

. >> i want to bring in chad myers here to talk about the science behind all of this.t do we know? is this connected to climate change? >> that is what they are putting it together with. let me explain why that makes sense. if this climate change model works why it happens. we are talking about clear air turbulence. there is not a cloud in the sky all of the sudden the plane drops or goes up. there are loops in the jet stream that make you drop or go down depending on if you get into one. the jet stream currently is from about new york city back into central parts of france. that is where the jet stream is now without global warming. the forecast for this model says the jet stream will move to the north with global warming because there will be more warm air down here. if you move the jet stream to the north that is where the planes fly. so if the planes are flying in the new location of the jet stream therefore the planes will get into a bumpier flight. what they are going to have to do it will burn more fuel if the jet stream is eventually here the planes will fly to

chad myers keeping track of all of this and jim in goldman, colorado. how is it looking? >> reporter: it is not too bad. it has been snowing for about six hours. 470 snow plows out trying to keep the roads open. in the air over 500 flights cancelled. we can count on that probably going up a little bit as the day continues. if they can keep the roads clear and planes landing and taking off. the upside is that all of this snow means moisture. we have had severe drought conditions here for really the last two years. last year was a horrible wildfire season so every inch of snow here is a plus come wildfire season. if you can deal with the roads and the skies and the kids because this is the first snow day for denver schools then this is a blessing this late snow. >> a snow day in the spring is pretty crazy. chad, where is this going? >> very cold. temperatures are going to be maybe down to single digits in some spots around the foothills. if you see something that is flush now it will be frozen tonight. look at wyoming. the winter 16 inches of snow on the ground. there are t
