it's also leading ing ting t i, anybody witness helpfulness is encouraged to tweet #kchelps. >> chad myersin the snow here in new york city with what you need to know about the snow. good morning, chad. >> good morning. about two hours ago it was all snow. light, fluffy snow band snow. then all of a sudden it started to sleet. now, it's raining. the cnn sign right there says 30 degrees. well, 30 degrees and this shine right here is not going to be good for the rest of the day. it's raining because at about 3,000 feet, it's 35 degrees. it's raining down through the atmosphere. down here, where it's 30. and everything is freezing up. now, scooping this sounds like a great idea. but had they left the snow, the snow would have made a little traction. you scoop away the snow, all you have it glazed ice. it could be very slippery today. even if it looks like it's been cleared, that may be the worst spot you walk on. here's what the graphics look like. snow all the way from binghamton and buffalo and erie. the heaviest snow is going to be to the north of where the heaviest snow was last time. we'

and chad myers is in the weather center. jen? >> reporter: we have seen the ice come down since about 5:00 this morning. it has been sleeting. we've seen periods of freezing rain. we've also seen a couple of snowflakes in decatudecatur, bu ice is the concern. decatur is an older neighborhood. we've got the older trees. it's notorious for the branchs to come down and people to lose power. most people in decatur still have power, but this is the concern. look at this branch. you can see the ice accumulating on the branches. this is what we're seeing all over town. and this is just a tiny one. imagine those big older trees behind me and even those power lines. it only takes about half an inch of ice to add 500 pounds of pressure to those lines and then they just snap. you lose power. and so that's the concern. we have a good 12 more hours of this, jake, as we go through the next overnight hours into tomorrow morning. we're expected to change into snow. could see 3 inches of snow by tomorrow morning. i'm going to turn things over the

chad myers, jump in if you will.'ve been watching the images of the ice collect and how fast it collects on everything from your radio antenna on the top of your car as you're driving to those power poles, to the trees, et cetera. there's really nothing you can do about that, is there? >> pretty helpless after it gets to be 30 degrees on the ground, we're 31, and it's raining. people don't understand how can it possible happen. how can it be below freezing and rain? because 3,000 feet up above it's 35 degrees. it makes rain drops up there. the raindrops fall through the colder air that's stuck here and it collects and collects quickly and gets heavy and very, very fast. we have new pictures in from augusta, georgia. i don't think you're going to believe what happened to some of those eastern counties in georgia and south carolina, nearly every tree has some type of damage. we're rolling videos right now trying to get them into the city. amazing stuff you'll see later on today. it's all about the rain, freezing rain.

let's go straight to our meteorologist chad myers standing by at the cnn weather center. is the very latest, chad? >> it's going to be a bumpy afternoon and night for people all the way south of crack down to the gulf coast. there's memphis, tennessee, right there. the big, red box, the watch box, which means sthat something is going on. it's moving ten miles to the southwest of memphis proper but this cell right there is rotating and will move into memphis in the next 15 minutes, maybe even less. now, even if you don't get a tornado where you are and it's likely that you don't because this one is fairly small, there is a large line of wind coming with the system as well. those winds could be 60 to 70 miles per hour so you need to get inside and take the pets inside. a tornado warning for memphis, tennessee, right now, wolf. >> isn't this a little early in the tornado season? >> it is. we get tornadoes every month of the year but the ones in the wintery season are into southern louisiana and alabama or georgia. they are farther to the north, warm air, 70 something degrees

we'll be checking in with chad myers. chad, give us the big picture right now. >> the new latest computer models just came out. they started running at about 7:00, they're all printed out. so there's a slight change in the forecast, but not that much. still all of the heavy, heavy snow, all snow, will be west of i-95. but new york city, you start out as snow, heavy snow. maybe four inches very quickly. then you change over to sleet and rain for a while. then back over to snow. this is going to happen up and down the east coast. new york, philadelphia, d.c., richmond, same story. it's going to snow hard. you could get six inches in a couple of hours and it will rain and sleet on top of that. snow comes back in, because cold air comes in behind it. so snowing now in d.c., philadelphia, birmingham, alabama. this is the story, there's the low, this is why it's changed just a little bit. going to move this low forward and it will drive almost over to charleston and up the east coast, stopping at 7:00 a.m. it's snowing in new yo

but first, let's get to chad myers. he's outside on the streets of atlanta, keeping a close eye on the power outages and the flight cancellations. chad, what's the latest? >> reporter: up to a quarter million people now without power and that number growing rapidly. when i first looked at that number, about 6:00 a.m. this morning, it was at 54,000. i thought, wow, maybe we get lucky. but now up to a quarter million and trees falling and power lines coming down. my coat is wet now. a long time ago, couple hours ago, at least, wolf, all of this stuff coming down was bouncing off. it was sleet. now it isn't sleet. now it's freezing rain. completely covering everything in ice. there is the ice just right on that little branch of that little plant right there. and the trees getting heavy and the winds blowing 30 miles per hour. 3,000 flights already cancelled across the country. almost 1,000 in hartsfield, jackson alone. i looked at flight tracker, saw three or four flights trying to get to atlanta, not sure they're going to

>> i remember it well, thank you very much, chad myers. you're talking about snow shields and thunder sleet. it sounds like some kind of norris battle with thor. but there's snow in 49 of 50 states right now? >> i have to be careful of what i say, because the only state that doesn't have snow is florida. i don't want to jinx florida at this point in time. but every other state, from oregon to washington obviously higher elevations, california, nevada, all the way into the higher elevations in montana. big snows there coming down in the past couple of days. even in the east, we have snow in georgia, carolinas, mississippi, alabama, louisiana, all of those places you don't expect to have isles or snow, 49 out of 50. there's always snow in hawaii in the mountains. >> florida, chad just jinxed you. thanks a lot. >>> this storm has been a deadly one, taking at least 16 lives so far. one death drawing a lot of attention because it's incredibly, incredibly sad. it also appears to have been completely preventable. more now from randi kaye. >> repo

as that deadly storm is bringing more misery to a huge chunk of the country, let's check in with chad myers. what's the forecast, chad? >> wolf, it's simply time to get off the road now. now the sun sets and the temperature drops rapidly. i'm giving you a three-minute warning. go home and stay there. it's going to start to get really slick out there. richmond, virginia, had thunder sleet. you certainly will hear it as it moves towards the d.c. area. that's going to fill in with rain, snow, and sleet and the freezing rain is going to make travel very difficult in the next couple of hours. now, we're not going to see a lot more snow. this is just about done. the big part of the storm, you could get six inches. everybody else, 2 to 3. not much along the coast. nothing for boston and the cape. back up to the mountains and up towards nova scotia. that's the story now. we refreeze. almost everything on the roadway right now. it gets down to 24 or so, very close. new york city down to d.c., it gets down to 28 in atlanta, down to 26 in columbia, augusta, where there's a mess on the roadways there.

chad myers is here with more of this wintery mess. a foot, you say? >> you know what, vermont and new hampshire, you know, they can handle it. they want it. they want to go play in it. it's not for new york city and it's not for boston. i guess, if you want to go upstate and get your snowmobiles out, like you need more, but there is more coming. look at the numbers, brooke, though. the third snowiest year ever in detroit, 77 inches of snow already this season. now, this is not just this year, this is the snow season, really from october to now. toledo, 72 inches, indianapolis, 52. and there's the big number, new york city 57 inches of snow, already. and it's not done. now, what is done, though, is some cold air, because i think we're going to start to get warm air in here. we could even get the chance of severe weather later in the week. the snow way up here for this storm, but it starts to warm up tremendously. we even have some flood watches out now and even a couple of flood warnings likely as it gets warmer, because some of that snow could melt so

let's go to chad myers. chad, does this incoming storm scare you more than the last one? >> without a doubt, this has a factor of 10 compared to the last one. that was 2 inches of snow. this is solid ice. this is ice on trees, on power lines, on everything. the power lines will come down, trees will fall down. there may be a million people without power by tomorrow night and then another million as the trees begin to fall. this storm is just now getting out of dallas, texas. it moves to the east and then runs right over atlanta, augusta, charlotte, columbia and on up over to the piedmont of north carolina. at least 10 inches of snow for washington, d.c., new york city, like you haven't had enough snow up there and then up to boston. that's the whole story. but the real, true problem with this storm is this area right here. that white area is an inch of ice on everything. that is going to bring down every other tree. i just can't imagine. we looked at this map and not only did we say this can't be happening, this truly is armageddon if this happens because your only hope i

chad myers is tracking the new storm. seems like one after another after another here. >> it is. but this is a little one. >> okay, good. >> yeah, to use the word "storm" we're stretching a little here. 2 to 4 inches for new york city. and i think after 12.5 yesterday, i think that's a dusting. >> yeah, it is. >> although 6 to 10 probably for boston, because this storm gets its act together when it gets east of long island, and it will dump snow on the cape, and dump snow on up even into maine, as well. there is the low right now. this is this afternoon, bringing snow to indiana, illinois. this is kentucky right through here. we'll see that low move to the east, swoop through, almost in clipper-type form. not in the clipper direction, but moving so quickly, because it's embedded in the jet stream. and then by late tomorrow night, 10:00, that's when it gets its act together. so it slides by new york, maybe four hours of snow. so if you get half an inch an hour, an inch an hour, 2 to 4. that's where my number came from. and

chad myers is right in the middle of all of this. chad, how much snow are we talking about? you're in new york. >> reporter: you know, 5 inches on the ground right now. there will be 8 inches on the ground at metlife stadium. metlife stadium, about the same time the super bowl would have started had it been on monday, and not sunday. yesterday a beautiful day. we were at 55 degrees here. today it has been snowing all day, 1 inch per hour. and there is no end in sight. 510 flights are cancelled out of new york city alone. that's about 70,000 seats. so all those people trying to go back to denver or, you know, seattle or wherever you came from, because people came from all over the country to see. they are all stranded either at the airports or back to their hotels. it is pretty snow. trust me, it is nice, light, although fluffy snow. you will be able to make a great snowman or sledding hill out of this. but it is going to come down for the rest of the night. we could easily see in some suburbs 10 inches. and i wouldn't be afraid to say 12 inches west of philadelphia where we

we'll check in with chad myers throughout the hour. we want to get a sense of where the storm is right now and where it's heading. chad, in terms of the latesters what's going on in north carolina? is the worst still yet to come there or are they over tworst? >> if you're in the triad, the piedmont you'll still get an awful lot of snow that will change over to sleet. talking about this higher elevation here. if you're in the lower elevations of north carolina it's going to be warm enough that it will either be a little bit of freezing rain at 33, 34, as it comes down it may freeze a little pit but going to be warming up to 35. it will just be solid rain eventually. in between is kind of that no man's land in this pink area that is the sleet and freezing rain mixed together. people will say what is the difference? the difference is that sleet hits you and it's frozen already. it hits you. it hurts. but it bounces off things. if it's rain and it's liquid and you're 30, all of a sudden it sticks to you like a tree or a car or branches and

chad myers is tracking the extreme weather.at's the storm sunday that could bury the northeast completely. could stop air travel allel together. here's the storm we're talking about today. this will hit different people than yesterday. we're talking kansas city, chicago, up state new york. that's where the warning goes today. snow in new york city tomorrow, four inches overnight. it changes to a. this is ice for baltimore, new york, d.c. it will be snow to the midwest. a foot from maine back to buff he and eerie where new york doesn't get the snow. some, but hit melts because tomorrow we get up to 34. it's an ice event in the morning everybody is worried about. we're worried about whether we can get to work or not. the storm develops in the plains, rolls quickly to the northeast. the next storm is already on the way, digs further south, gets colder air. it gets more moisture. that's a nor'easter for sunday night and monday that could bury the northeast. i'll guarantee like broadway joe for you that there will be some place 24 t

chad myers is in our severe weather center. chad, why are so many airports still backed up. sunlen called it the hangover. >> you know, it is. because all of the pilots that are there may not be with the equipment that they need to fly. pilots are assigned and classified and qualified on certain planes. a he if a dc-9 is sitting there and you've got an md-88 pilot there, they can't fly those two planes. it all goes back to where the pilots need to be and why they didn't get there. they didn't get where they were supposed to be because the flight that was supposed to take them to atlanta didn't take them there so there's a plane there with no pilot. there are 28,000 flights on a regular day. 2,000 or less than that canceled today. we're still flying more than 90% of the flights on this board right now. but because we had so many planes that were canceled and so many people that were supposed to be on those planes and so many planes that only have three empty seats on any given day, if you can imagine, a million people trying to get to that one -- or those three seats or the n

we're tracking the storm with chad myers. chad, if you're home, then it can be a good thing. but for a lot of people, this becomes a nightmare. >> or you're stuck in an airport for days and days trying to get a plane that didn't fly to atlanta. it's going to snow up and down the east coast and change over to rain in many cities. here almost to new york city we have the snow. snowing in philadelphia, in d.c. and richmond. and back down where some of our other reporters are in the carolinas, sleet is coming in. we have a low pressure that's out to the west, running up the east coast like that. as it does that, it's going to put down enough precipitation for everybody to get 15 inches. but that won't happen. that won't happen because if you're close to the shore, you're going to get a rain-snow mix. you're going to get sleet to mix in. let's use i-95 for a demarcation line. along i-95, that's where you'll probably see 8 inches of snow, plus or minus a couple because i-95 isn't a straight road. that's where we could see 14 inches but we won't. we'll see rain and sleet on top of i

joining me now is meteorologist chad myers live from the cnn weather center. chad, how soon will this bitter cold move back in? >> it comes in -- it's already in chicago. it's already in minneapolis. it comes into the big cities tonight, tomorrow, and really the bulk of it is on thursday into friday. chicago, now somewhere around 17, won't get above freezing for the next seven days. in fact, many lows in chicago will be 5 or 10 below zero. it's going to be 17 below in the twin cities. this is a cold air. it skirts the south. it gets here. the low in atlanta is going to be 22. we'll take that. this is the core of the cold. ontario, quebec, it swings down through and into the upper midwest and clips new york city as well. here are the lows tonight. minneapolis, 14 degrees below zero. do the math. that's 46 degrees below freezing. chicago, 1 below. that's the morning low. even for new york, you get to 18 tonight. but that's not the coldest night of the week. tomorrow night will be colder and friday night will be colder than that. it gets down to 11 in new york cit

joining us from outside the cnn center in atlanta is chad myers. nick valencia joins us from decatur in georgia. chad, this ice sounds really, really bad. how unusual is this down south? >> we typically get ice storms. my son wants it to snow so he can get on his sled. it doesn't really ever get to the snow. we always get sleet or freezing rain. this is what we get probably two or three times a year but nothing like this. what we have is a large snow cone. this is the good news. this is what we wanted to happen for atlanta. this stuff bounces off the trees, at least a little. you can stop from the city about five miles and it is not this. it didn't freeze on the way down. it is freezing on the trees. it is liquid coming down. it is mixing here. the mix is the problem. a lot of the trees are going to come down. i know we are 100,000 without power. i am sure it is going to go to 1 billion easy. >> it is not making for snowman making weather. that's the concern. let's go to nick now. thanks for wiping down the lens. you are just outside of atlanta in o

chad myers is in new york to tell us more. good morning, chad. >> reporter: good morning, carol.g on in arkansas. a snowstorm in kansas and parts of oklahoma. that storm now moving through into parts of missouri. it is a winter storm warning all the way to bar harbor, maine. all the way to massachusetts, farther north. first snow that we had with the last storm. the storm brought snow to new york city. this storm brings an ice storm to new york city on top of the snow that we already have. but the snow is through syracuse into binghamton, burlington, vermont and all the way up into maine. that's where the snow is with this storm. there is an ice storm south of there. this always happens. there is always an ice event where it is probably 30 degrees on the surface, 35 aloft. 10,000 feet up it is warm. so it is going to rain down. down here, it is cold, about he low freezing. making sleet and freezing rain all night long. very difficult travel out of the northeast for tomorrow. there is the storm right now. there is the ice storm for arkansas. it moves very close to paducah, probabl

we'll check with chad myers tracking the storm for us in a moment.d lavandera, i like to begin with you and the visuals, you were standing out, as i mentioned 14 or so days ago, the cars were not moving. school kids were stranded on buses on those highways. now, looking good so far. >> even two weeks later, still kind of hard to imagine that that event actually took place on these interstates. this is coming just out of downtown atlanta. things running smoothly. just a light drizzle we've seen throughout most of the day, traffic running very smoothly as we start approaching the rush hour time here in the atlanta area. so we'll be monitoring that throughout the evening. really, the brunt of this storm won't be happening for several more hours. even despite that, a lot of schools, and businesses, and city government across the region, taking early recautions. many things shut down today as well as already announcing closures for tomorrow as well. so, school districts and businesses and government offices really starting to shut down and prepare. and we

chad myers is in new york central park. margaret conley is in boston. chad i'll start with you. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carol. what's coming down now is exactly the consistency of a snow cone and i mean exactly. sleet pellets coming out of the sky. you would think it just came out of a snow cone machine. earlier today it was raining and it was 31 and this is what was happening all over the city. all of these little ice crystals, all of this coming down here, freezing up on every single surface. this is only the second storm this week. two more are coming next week. from wyoming to maine more than 100 million people are waking up to another round ever snow and ice this morning. >> horrible. horrible. >> reporter: overnight snow beginning to pile up in new england where more than a foot of snow is forecast in some parts. >> it's been crazy. >> reporter: in the midwest up to 11 inches of snow blanketed parts of kansas. the state's governor has declared a state of emergency. in illinois white out conditions coupled with sleet and ice sent car after car skidding off

our meteorologist chad myers is tracking the storm. chad, how bad is it going to get? >> well, it's still icing in atlanta. it has been icing since 2:00 in the morning, but that's the difference, erin, is that the storm, the last one that paralyzed the city, started at 2:00 p.m. so people were already out doing things and they got caught off guard. at 2:00 a.m. you're not doing anything except sleeping. people woke up and went, i ain't going out in that, and they didn't. completely different situation happened. the situation that atlanta had is now happening right now in raleigh durham because it started snowing at noon. people were already out doing things. that snow is moving up towards d.c. it's already snowing in resh month, hampton roads and icing all the way down here. david mattingly in charlotte, going to get freezing rain, sleet all night. really more sleet. now sleet is frozen by the time it hits the grouchbtnd. it hurts you when it hits you. sleet freezes on contact. freezing rain is more dangerous than sleet. there will be a big snow event. i'm drawing that

chad myers live in new york, of course, in the midst of all of this. ad, it's like ground hogs day. >> reporter: all over again, exactly. very heavy snow. a lot of water in this snow. and i asked my wife, she just walked over here, and i said was it slippery? she said no, it's like walking on a slurpy. i don't know whether she has ever walked on a slurpy or not or that was just something she thought about, but it really is so full of water, get your gloves completely wet. looking over here, though, it makes a beautiful scene. it's not windy. so the snow is sticking to the trees. that's some good news, some bad news. because of the snow, could get those trees quite heavy and break some of those branches and we could lose power. probably not in the city, but certainly in the suburbs. very pretty conditions here. but now 450 flights alone in the new york city metro closed or cancelled today, because of this. the rest of the numbers you talk about is the backlog. because this plane doesn't get to l.a., the l.a. plane doesn't get someplace else. that's how w
