let's get to chad myers in the weather center. let us know how things are going to be. >> it's going to get ugly from dallas right to raleigh-durham and hampton roads. that's a big swath of the south with ice and snow. now, the storm that brought the rain, snow, sleet, all that to texas yesterday is moving off the coast. the low country of south carolina, you're getting ice. still snow into the piedmont and the triangle in north carolina still seeing snow right now. that ends today. the next round comes in. this is what we have for today. one, two to four inches. that's it to go. another storm develops in texas and moves toward the east coast. here it comes. comes out of mexico. gets the gulf of mexico moisture and then tries to turn it into a snowstorm for dallas, little rock, memphis, nashville all of the way up toward raleigh-durham and into winston-salem and eventually hampton roads. big snow numbers for the south. 4 to 6 inches north of atlanta. look from charlotte right on through raleigh, that could be a foot of snow even i

chad myers is out on columbus circle. you've been out there all morning. you've been talking about how the temperatures have been dipping, which means the ice is going to set in. what are you seeing? where is the storm right now? >> reporter: this was on top of my camera until i picked it off. that's a chunk of ice. that's freezing rain that's falling. it's raining now and 29 degrees. it's been raining at laguardia, newark jfk. all of that starts to go downhill and after sunset this is going to be a treacherous place to walk or drive. the snow continues north of here. it has snowed across a lot of connecticut, massachusetts, and into maine, new hampshire, vermont, all morning long. we changed over to rain for a while. now we're raining and it's colder. 29 degrees. if you're farther out to the west, you are already done with it. buffalo, cleveland, detroit, toledo all of the way through south bend and chicago, all picked up their fair share for the entire month of february. thank you, punxsutawney phil i think. >> thanks for nothing. all right, chad myers.

chad myers is in columbus circle with a look at that. what is this about 30 more days? >> reporter: that's just a random number i made up. it could be 35 or 40. 30 days is only march 5th. so we're still talking a trough in the east a ridge in the west. the west remains warmer than normal. the east remains colder than normal and when that happens, every time a low pressure comes by there can be snow rather than rain. now there will be rain in atlanta. maybe rain in tallahassee and all that. the northeast prepare for storm after storm after storm. some may hit vermont. some may hit d.c. it's the pattern for the next four to five weeks. temperatures are cold. 17 right now here at central park and colder than that in other places. it's cold for pets and people and for your car and cold for everybody. so the next couple days we see that continuing. low pressure goes by. first storm goes by with probably two to four-inch snowfall across the northeast. could be more into maine and also new brunswick and that. there are so many storms behind it if this stays cold like i expect

. >> chad myers is in atlanta for us. chad, i remember this just a little more than a year ago you and i talking. a city that was paralyzed when it was hit with some snow and some ice. what's it going to look like this time around? >> reporter: a lot of schools got canceled already today in preparation for this. that will stop a lot of cars from being on the road tonight when it does start. it's going to start here in atlanta proper around 4:00 or 5:00. it will be rain but rain and 32. sleet too. if you take and think about this map, we're talking all of the way from dallas, texas, just south of little rock, and south across parts of memphis, all of northern mississippi, northern alabama, georgia and then kind of turning a little bit right on up into the carolinas, that swath, 150 miles. 200 miles wide. that's where the snow will be coming down on the very bottom edge it will be sleet and freezing rain. that's where we are right now. there are the warnings on the map all of the way across the deep south. i suspect that rai

meteorologist chad myers knows the answers to both.down the snow and ice in dallas is now over the carolinas and north georgia. it will move out later on this morning, it's done. 3 to 4 inches of snow in some spots and making charlotte, asheville, knoxville commute pretty tough this morning. there's this storm. if you're not already seeing it it will move away. the next storm developing out towards mexico moves across and south of dallas spreading that snow all the way from dallas through tupelo little rock memphis. big snows, 4 inches maybe 6 inches in cities that don't get 4 on average for an entire year. this will just be one storm. the storm is in the gulf of mexico. it'll grab some of that gulf moisture and dump it up here across the northern sections of the storm. that's where the snow will be. there will also be some ice just to the south of this band. but you're seeing 2 to 4 inches anywhere north of dallas sherman, dennison memphis and all the way across to knoxville maybe as far as hampton roads. more coming in places that do

chad myers? how many days until spring? >> you know i keep hearing everyone talk about the next arctic blast i don't see this current one ending. i don't know when one starts and one ends because it never really warms up. the snow is about done for new york it's done for philadelphia kentucky picked up 18 inches of snow. not far south of richmond virginia picking up 11 inches if you get down where rosa was, there's a lot more snow there. and the cold just continues, it is cold all the way down to new orleans, it's cold in atlanta, where it's been freezing look at this the current wind chills it feels like 12 below in buffalo, 11 below in detroit. and the wave air we have now, it warms up a degree before the next cold wave comes by on saturday and the next one comes by on wednesday. it's one after the other. i looked it up today. i googled it because i can. when does spring start? about 31 days and 12 hours, so i'm not sure that that's a technical term. i don't think meteorologically it's anywhere near. >> did chad just say

meteorologist chad myers joins us from the cnn center in atlanta. the south just not accustomed to this kind of deep freeze. >> you never get accustomed to an ice storm. there's nothing can you do when it rains on ground that's 31. you can't drive on it it's hard to walk. maneuvering is just impossible. so this storm goes all the way from dallas texas, tyler, texarkana, all the way across the deep south, northern mississippi, alabama and georgia with the winter storm warning. the pink area. the purple area the winter weather advisory area. expecting atlanta to be 33 to the south of the city 32 and ice where i'm standing and 31 and snow just 20 miles north of here and that snow could be could be six inches deep. and there's just no way to plow that when you have like ten plows for the entire city. i know there's a few more than that, because every little municipality has a certain number of plows. here's the storm. as it rolls across the south. you get memphis involved. you get nashville, jackson, mississippi. you get birmingham and huntsville and al
