. >>> now to cnn's chad myers in the weather center for us. just how much rain fell here and what's ahead? >> pamela, it was the amount of rain in inches but also the rate of rain that made such a difference today, that made all of those pictures here. everywhere that you see orange, including new york city, the bronx, all the way across queens, all 4 inches of rain or more. there were many places with more than 6 inches and very close to 8 inches here for jfk. 7.97 inches of rainfall fell since midnight. that is an all-time high. there has never been a wetter day in jfk history since they've been keeping track. even places like brooklyn, over 7 inches of rain from this storm alone. now, the rain is gone. it's moved off toward eastern long island, and by tomorrow it's just a bad memory. there will still be some showers tonight, and overnight we could see a few spots in yellow of an inch or two, but that's about it. this is just about winding down right now. >> all right. chad myers, thanks so much. >>> we are just over 24 hours away from a gov

a storm surge of up to six feet threatening the coast and chad myers is standing by. than 100 miles offshore, but it really is looking like it's getting still a little bit stronger right now. winds could be 75 or 80 miles per hour gusting on shore overnight, hurricane force especially with the gusts at 49 miles per hour at virginia beach already. the biggest threat is going to be the coastal erosion and surge of the water that runs up these estuaries across parts of the east coast. the winds are going to blow from the east for a very long time. pushing water along that coast and rising that water up to surge levels of up to six feet in some spots so, yes, it begins to slow down tomorrow as it makes shore -- makes landfall probably between 5:00 and 6:00 in the morning and by sunday it's all over with gusts only around 20 miles per hour. >> all right, chad myers, thank you so much. we'll keep our eye on that. that is it for me. laura coates hosts an entire hour on senator bob menendez indictment. stick aroundnd for that. from one sererving. to help keep me sharp. try ne

cnn meteorologist chad myers is tracking everything. chad, where is it going? going in the atlantic. and then it's going to stay in the atlantaic. by the time it hits something you're going to be sick of hearing about it, we're seven or ten days before this thing being anywhere, it's so far out in the middle of the atlantic. even byp tonight it gets to be a major hurricane, around 105 right now. look at tomorrow night at a 8:00. we're looking at 160. that gets over your 157 to be cat 5. big wave, lots of wind around the storm system and really so far, missing everything that is the good news. oh, and well, my computer crashed, so now i can't show you the rest. that's just kind of what happens. so the effect basically is that this thing is going to be in the water for the next week. we'll be talking about it every day where is it going to go, how long will it take to get there and so really you have to watch this. this could be from north of the carolinas all the way to nova scotia. we don't know. we don't know anything about seven days, ten days away for any hu

cnn's meteorologist chad myers has been following this. so what is the latest track?us where it's headed. >> still headed to the west-northwest. i mean, that's been the track from the hurricane center and all the models for at least four days. yes, 155, it was briefly yesterday a category 5 at 157 or higher, but we were all the way up to 165. right now we're still kind of losing a little power. there's some shear out there. there's also colder water up to the north, maybe that's another five days away, though, that's how long we will be talking about this same storm because it's moving very, very slowly, but moving right along the path here of where the models say it should be going. while we are all going to wait for this big turn to the right. does it happen a little bit early? maybe bermuda is in trouble? does it happen a little late and maybe the northeast could get brushed by this thing. it's in very warm water, obviously the steering currents around the high and ahead of the low, this is a typical pattern for a recurbing storm. the cold water is from franklin, m

let's go to cnn's chad myers, who's at the weather center for us. ad, how did this get so bad so quickly? >> training rain. one storm moved over the area and then another one right behind it moved right over the festival again. this is in a rain shadow. this is in a place that doesn't rain much ever. this white area right through there. there's lake tahoe. there's reno. we'll zoom in for you. you can actually see if you want to go to google earth you can actually see the city itself, kind of a ring here. a little bit faint but you can really see what's going on right here in the burning man, there in the middle. and there are no roads. no paved roads here whatsoever. this is just that silt. the clay that got wet. it's like walking into a lake and expecting not to sink down a little bit when you walk in off the shore. all of that was just completely saturated. there was no place for that rain to go. and so the people just got stranded there. that clay gets very, very slippery. here's the rainfall. just one area after another. that's the area right the

. >>> chad myers is tracking the storm and joins me now. chad, it's incredible the amount of rain and also, though, as a new yorker, people neu rain was coming. nobody expected like anything we got. the system was not ready for it. you have a whole river flooding. tell us where we're going to see all this additional flooding. >> really now we're out in suffolk county, eastern long island. the rain for new york city is over, but boy, the pictures we are looking at was unbelievable. it was the rate of rain that did it. if you put that down in three hours, all of a sudden that doesn't go well. hour after hour of rainfall still coming down here. now the red box is out onto long island. yes, there are some hours around new york city, but really more like drizzle. the big constitution is out heh big spot is out there. and as just mentioned jfk broke it's all-time record, 7.92 inches since midnight. it just got updated, 7.97. no place in america, in the world can handle that much rain that quickly. brooklyn checking in at over seven inches since mi

let's get right to cnn meteorologist chad myers. chad, where's this monster storm headed? not very far. this is going to take a long time to get anywhere, jake. it really is just a slow lumbering storm out in the mi middle of the atlantic. there's puerto rico way over there, so this is just way out there. but it's 150 mile per hour storm. and just about this time yesterday is when this rapid intensification really, really wound up. and we had two airplanes flying through it at that time, and they were just sending back numbers like we were just -- we were in awe. it was 130 two hours ago and then it was 170. how did that just happen, just that rapid intensification in the very warm-water. so the last symbol you see here, here's the bahamas. here's puerto rico. that's next wednesday. that's how long this thing is going to take to get out of the atlantic and into the sargaaso sea for that matter and take another few days to make a turn. a turn too soon with the models will take it to bermuda. a turn too late will take closer to the u.s. as likely still a major hurricane. it'

chad myers has the details. >> a couple big stories out there today.still have rain across the pacific northwest. just giving a bit of relief for the dreadful drought that they have been having out there for the past weeks on end. more rainfall to come, although it takes a break today, it certainly comes back again on wednesday with the low pressure itself bringing in the rainfall, we'll take all the rain we can get. it looks like in spots 2 to 3 inches will be responsible, maybe more than that in the hire elevations. it rained in houston yesterday, first time in a very long time that they got widespread rainfall. rained across parts of florida as well. more rain coming down today for florida. and even with some of the flooding that we had in south florida yesterday, i think most of that heavy rainfall now moves a bit farther to the north on up toward cinnamon beach in the areas from daytona up to northern parts of florida near jacksonville. we'll have to watch out for that. temperatures pretty mild here. houston 91, you should be 89. pretty close to w

chad myers has the forecast. >> the desert southwest is not going to look like a desert in some spots. significant rainfall with the monsoon moisture right there off the areas around vegas, phoenix, and flagstaff. significant rainfall coming in. i'm certain in some places we'll have flash flooding because there are spots between 2 and 4 and even isolated 6-inch rainfall possibilities across the southwest. across the southeast and gulf coast, more showers especially right along the coast itself. you're going to see some colorful areas from pensacola to bi biloxi. now the middle part of the country. when does it really heat up? some spots could approach 30 degrees warmer than you should be by sunday, especially the upper midwest. look at minneapolis. you should be 78. it will be 10 2 on sunday afternoon and humid. it's not going to be dry. record-high temperatures will be set. even in denver, 96. you should be significantly cooler than that. back up to 92 by the end of your weekend. have a safe couple of days and travel safely out there, people. >>> in the coming hours, president biden

chad myers has the latest forecast. >> it was the amount of rain that fell but also how quickly it fell in some spots. 2.77 inches of rain fell in just one hour. that should happen only one time in 200 years. in some spots now approaching 10 inches of rainfall. not only up to the north, but also down here in rhode island and southern parts of massachusetts saw very heavy rainfall and flash flooding. more flash flood watch, watches all across the board here are in effect because more rainfall is coming. more heavy rainfall that could train again. we hope that this rainfall moves very quickly. that is what the storm this weekend didn't do, it just sat there. but now as the storm moves on by, notice how far it goes offshore, that is some of the good news. there are some yellow spots that indicate 2 to 3 inches of rainfall could still fall. one more thing on the horizon, i know it is still five days away really before it would rain from this, but there is so much potential rainfall from hurricane lee. moving to the north along here and even up maybe eastern rhode island and eastern massachu

chad myers has more on the flood threat on the east coast and the summer-like heat in the central u.s. >> very significant flood event is shaping up here for the new york city metro area. i say metro area because it could be over parts of eastern long island, could be central long island, could be queens, even manhattan. and certainly we'll run this up into customer and possibly even a little bit of upstate new york involved as well. hour after hour of rainfall, this is a computer program that tries to predict where that rainfall will be. and for many hours very heavy rainfall here in the metro area. so it is really hard to tell you whether in six or 12 hours where each thunderstorm will be. but this is a low pressure system off the east coast, not tropical, doesn't have a name, but it certainly will put down significant amounts of rainfall. two to four on this model. i've seen other models that are more than double that. so think about that over the next 24 hours. how much rainfall, how much flooding could be possible and how that affects your commute for today. something else going

cnn's chad myers has more on the northeast forecast and the above normal temperatures in the midwest. >> there was a lot of rain. but there was also high rain rates. an inch and a half to almost 2 inches of rain per hour fell in this area. there's bmanhattan. here's queens and long island. everywhere you see orange, there were 4 inches or more. some places had more than 6 inches. one of them is jfk. they broke an all-time record for any day there's never been that much rainfall to fall since they have been keeping records. not just september, october, may, any single day. even for brooklyn. over 7 inches of rain fell yesterday in that storm. so it's gone now. the rain showers have moved away. there's not going to be much today. there will be a few scattered showers around in the overnight hours to pick up a quarter of an inch to an inch of rain, but not a the lot. the next big story is how hot it gets in the middle part of the country. all of a sudden, we're back to summer here across the midwest. and also towards the southwest. for the next two to three days, look at chicago, omaha.

chad myers has more on where the storm may be heading. >> hurricane lee, very impressive major hurricane in the atlantic ocean right now. and getting stronger. it is in very warm water. the eye is very clear there on the last couple of frames. which means that the storm is likely even getting stronger at this hour. hurricane hunters have been flying back and forth to see how strong this storm is. and still moving toward the northwest. but the models are really turning this hard to the right at the very, very end of that five day period. turning it hard. this is the american model. all the ensembles of the american model turning it hard to the right. now, when does the turn happen? that is always a question. does it happen 12 hours early and turn here with this line? or does it turn 12 hours later and turn over here? a big story for the northeastern part of the united states and even into atlantic canada. where the storm is right now is 3 to 5 degrees firns farenheit,3 degrees celsius above normal. but there was a hurricane here last week, hurricane franklin, also a major hurricane. and i

chad myers has more. >> summer not going away without a fight here in the eastern half of the u.s. 200 record highs expected this week alone. east really of the mississippi river. the heat index will be high, the humidity is all over the place. temperatures are well on up into the upper 90s. and then the heat index will make it feel much warmer than that. but there is a cooldown. minneapolis, you are almost 100 yesterday and now you are back down into the 60s. a little cooler than you should be. chicago, you will be a day later to get that colder air. but it is on its way. you go from 93 all the way down to a morning low of 58. finally some football weather out there for chicagoland. off to the east, nothing yet. temperatures are still going to be hot. cold front not making it into d.c. for a while. it will make it to new york city i think probably 72 hours from now with a cold front that runs on by, but still thursday with a thunderstorm, 94, and then the cooler air by the weekend. >>> steve harwell former lead si singer of smash mouth has died. harwell led the group in 1994 up until

chad myers is in the cnn weather center. chad, i tried to take my dog out for a walk.d not want to go. it's too hot. i think everybody else feels the i same. >> it was hotter like three or four weeks ago but somehow, this heat feels hotter than that. just like we just want fall to be here. it's like, where is it already? well, it's almost in chicago. and the storms that really affected burning man, they have moved away and into parts of montana. no longer in i effect there. but the heat is now on in the midwest and also in the east. but for some spots, only maybe one or two more days. we will break 400 record highs across the country this week alone. but all of a sudden, yes, there's a cold front coming and boy, is it really going to help out minneapolis. today, minneapolis was 98 degrees. in less than 48 hours, it's going to be 69. it's going to take a couple of days to get to new york. another day or so to get to chicago, but it is on the way. not yet for d.c. temperatures upper 90s feeling like 105. that humidity just will not release. here's chicago though. down to

cnn's meteorologist chad myers is tracking the story from the cnn weather center. ibe unusual amounts of rainfall leading to flooding. one 200-year event. we're seeing these every couple weeks. explain what happened and what's going to happen next? >> for this town, they had a -- this event should have happened once every 200 years and it happened yesterday. 2.77 inches of rain in one hour. hard to imagine where that rain has to go so quickly. and then even though it stopped raining there briefly, you talk about that, almost ten inches of rainfall came down. there was heavy rainfall there in parts of rhode island as well and on up towards the berkshires north of worcester. and still running off, still seeing flooding right now. now in the rivers. the rivers are swelling, not so much in the towns and streets, but some of the streets don't even exist anymore because they were washed away. no rainfall right now. nothing really for today, but i do think we will see more rainfall tomorrow. there are still watches up. obviously, now, there's no place for the rain to go. l

chad myers is in the weather center. so, chad, you know, you're doubling your speed in 24 hours. 200 miles an hour. been measured. this could be the strongest recorded storm ever in the atlantic ocean when it's said and done. what does this mean? >> it means that this hurricane has some work to do. if we are going to get to any of that, because it had a very rough 12 hours. this thing looks horrible right now, and that's great news. it ran into sheer today, which means wind that kind of tore it apart. i often say hurricanes are like my cat. don't touch me. and if you touch it with something, it doesn't like it. and that's what happened today. so hurricane hunters are in it. the first pass they flew through was 120 miles per hour. they have more times to if through and look for higher wind, but that is some good news. we have a storm that had a very tough time even keeping its eye intact today. forecasts is still 145, category 4 across even 125, but the end of that cone, erin, is wednesday of next week. we have a long way to go. and even at that, that is still only north of puerto

it intensified from a tropical storm wednesday, but as chad myers tells us, it could still get much, much stronger. >> there is hurricane lee in the middle of the atlantic. going to be a very hefty storm. very, very big storm here. what we call a category 4 hurricane. at this point in time somewhere in the ballpark of 240 kilometers per hour. missing all of the islands so far, all the models taking it to the north and then eventually even a turn to the right and maybe away from land but it is too early to tell. i think really we won't even see any landfall for 7 to 10 more days and that could be anywhere from the carolinas in the u.s. all the way up toward nova scotia. we simply don't know where this thing is going, it is just too far out there. it is in very warm water right now, rapidly intensifying. but look at this blue, this is the wake of what was hurricane franklin. hurricane franklin was also 240 kilometer per hour storm out here in the atlantic, churning up the water. using the energy and the heat from the water and that is where this storm is going. there may be some time w

meteorologist chad myers has more on what to expect. >> ophelia lash ing the coast o north carolina with punishing waves, beach erosion, some of the waves getting over the top of the barrier islands here along the outer banks. very heavy rainfall coming into polices like new jersey, delaware, even towards the nation's capitol. let me push this ahead to the 9:00 hour or so. well on land by then, but still notice how large the area of rainfall. that rainfall shield is going to be all the way up in from new england all the way back down even when the storm is just crossing over into virginia. so an awful lot of rainfall with this. a lot of surge possible. those pounding waves really creating significant beach erosion along the east coast. even though this wasn't a category 3 or 4, it did have its moments all the way up and down the east coast with 3 to 4 inches of rainfall. because it is moving so fast, we probably won't see that 10 to 15 inches worth of rain, but there's still the possibility of flooding with flood watches and a few warnings already in effect. so yes, it's going to be a st
