. >> cnn's chad myers is live in the cnn weather center. so, chad, this is the northern part of california what more do we know this was a 7.0 earthquake just off the coast of northern california. >> so there could have been a tsunami generated a significant tsunami with inundation onto the land. alex, this could be something here. we don't know numbers yet. obviously, we don't know what the wave would have been. we don't know where it is right now. but we do know that northern california, very close to the coast, would have already experienced it. so that's going to be our ground truth. but san francisco, you could get some type of a wave here about 50 minutes from now. so don't count 50. count it 45 and and be to the good here. but this was a very strong quake. very shallow as well that we think the depths have been changing up and down as they're kind of evaluating what this earthquake truly did. now there was most of the shaking on land here. of course not that far from fort bragg, but this is the area that could also see the waves from

let's go now to meteorologist chad myers in the cnn weather center. ad, what's the forecast as we're heading into the new year? >> well, so far so good for us. i mean, airports are acting very, very well. it will be a windy day in the plains with a fire threat and also a little bit of snow like omaha changing from rain over to snow. but the airport is doing really well. clouds are very thin. not much rainfall over big airports. there's your omaha rain at this point in time, but it does change over to snow overnight. now this is the storm that will affect new york city around ten, 11 or 12:00 tomorrow night. kind of a special time in new york city. and here it comes. i'm going to stop you right at 11:00. you see, the yellow could even be some orange in there. could be thunder and lightning around times square. otherwise, the coldest spot i can find for midnight tomorrow night. nine degrees in minot. temperatures should be fairly mild in new york. in fact, about as warm as we've been for a couple of years. the record highest we've ever been is 58. it wil

let's get back to meteorologist chad myers with the very latest on this one. chad, what is the forecast and how is sasquatch feeling about it? >> he's getting more snow out there in california and oregon and more rainfall. just one storm after another. now a little bit farther to the east in the mississippi river valley. some rain. there's not a lot of travel that really goes on today. really short trips, just maybe across town from a hotel to grandma's or whatever it might be. but really not a lot of problems, especially airport delays. the snow is still on the ground in many spots, but now the sun is burning it off, even in new york city. so it was a white christmas eve. maybe not a white christmas day for some, but still snowy. obviously all the way back to minnesota. here's the rain from saint louis all the way back down to almost new orleans, and you'll see a few little lightning bolts here. so there could be some thunder and lightning for your forecast. new orleans, you'll take it because it has been such a drought ridden year in the lower mississippi riv

let's bring in meteorologist chad myers. chad, what's the forecast look like for new year's eve? >> well, wet for new york city, for sure. and there might even be lightning and thunder in the area. so if you're going to be outside a lot in new york city, and many of you will be. keep that in mind. maybe you have some kind of a safe place to go. no real weather right now. this is a great news. people trying to get in and out of airports and airports are doing very well. we have some rain changing over to snow and omaha, but not a major hub. i mean, i lived there a long time. not too many planes in and out of there going through eppley. there's the snow though. moving into chicago, maybe later on tonight into tomorrow, but it should be mixed with rain and snow. so therefore not really a big icing event here. and really for the entire country here things look pretty good. please do not get outside here in new york city without a raincoat though, because there could be a couple of inches of rain in some spots. certainly not the warmest and not the coldest for the rest of the week, or

our meteorologist, chad myers, is joining us live from the cnn weather center right now. what can you tell us about the forecast? >> well, for new york city, it's going to be thunderstorms. i mean, maybe not severe thunderstorms, but certainly thunder and lightning out there. and then this is the storm we're looking at here. it's right over kansas city right now, but it will swing to the east. and by tomorrow morning it will be probably centered over ohio. and then all of a sudden, the times we care about seven, eight, nine, ten, 11, all of a sudden from dc to baltimore, philadelphia, all the way up to boston, there will be showers. now temperatures are fairly mild. this is a pretty warm new year's in the 50s here. and even right at 50 for the ball drop in new york city. if you are in l.a., please no fireworks when the winds are going to be blowing 40. please. we don't need that out there. and then the pacific northwest, rain and snow. but this is just a series. i think this is number five of storms that have come through here, wolf. >> chad myers reporting for us. chad, t

let's bring in cnn meteorologist chad myers. ow, chad, so officials have warned about the wind speed being a factor here. what can you tell us about the fire's movement? >> you know, high pressure right over the central part of the great basin. all of a sudden, that high pressure wants to push its winds out, and then the mountains get in the way. and then when the mountains get in the way, you start to get the canyons. and that's where this fire was in the malibu canyon area, funneling those winds down like a like a wind tunnel. really? look at the fire storm here. this thing burned five and a half football fields every second. so to the tune now of four square miles. and like veronica said, the winds are going to pick back up tonight. five and a half football fields in a minute. for the time that where the winds were blowing and at times 93mph, they've died down to the 20s and 30s right now. but there are air assets everywhere. i can count one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight helicopters or planes. now dropping phos-ch

chad myers, thank you very much. all right. to some of the other headlines we're watching for you this hour. the fda has issued an urgent salmonella warning for eggs sold at costco. the agency says there's a, quote, reasonable possibility eating them could result in serious health issues or death. the affected product is the handsome brook farms brand of signature organic, pasture raised, 24 count eggs. they have a use by date of january 5th. they were sold in georgia, alabama, tennessee and north and south carolina. also, the cdc says whooping cough cases are at their highest level in a decade. whooping cough, also known as pertussis, starts with symptoms similar to the common cold but a painful full body cough can develop after a week or two. the cough can be so severe it causes patients to vomit and even break ribs. the cdc recommends everyone get vaccinated. and one lucky person could get a belated billion dollar christmas gift. wouldn't that be nice? the mega millions jackpot has soared to an estimated $1.15 billion, the h

let's go right to cnn meteorologist chad myers. chad the tsunami warning has thankfully been lifted, but there is still a threat of more aftershocks. tell us more oh no question, jake. >> i mean we've had over 30 aftershocks already from 2.5 up to about 5.1, but 7.0 was this big quake. so we were in for a shock now the jolt felt very heavy by only about 15,000 people. this is bigfoot country. this is redwood country not a very populated area there. and that's the good news. but when i saw this 7.0, what we didn't know was how much the ground had moved under the ocean and did the ground move up or down or just back and forth. and so that's why this really statewide, all the way from oregon, all the way down to san francisco, significant tsunami warning went out and it went out for a lot of people. and the phones were going off. get away from the shore. this is possible but now the tsunami warning has now been canceled. this was a big quake, no question about it. but it was offshore. it wasn't very deep, which concerned me because tha

our meteorologist, chad myers is joining us right now. so, chad, what's the latest still a 7.0. >> although it fluctuated during the day and the depth very very shallow less than a mile deep. and that was the real concern today. if you have a 7.0 earthquake and if that earthquake moved this way, you were going to get a tsunami well, the earthquake moved this way and we didn't get a tsunami. so what we did get was a lot of sloshing of pools in the area. probably a lot of land there, the redwoods flying back and forth, swaying. but the canceled, the tsunami warning one hour after issued. this is 150 miles away. look at the pool sloshing around here with those secondary waves going up and down into california. now closer to the coast. there was some shaking and there was some breaking, but really this was really, i would say, 15,000 people felt very strong shaking the really not populated area of california. if there is such a thing. but it was a strong to a major quake, very strong at 7.0. we get about 1615 of those per year around the globe

cnn's chad myers is following it all for us. chad. us who's got to be concerned and where. >> you know, i mean, all the parishes of louisiana, even into parts of arkansas. and then a break tomorrow. but another round of this on saturday. so here's where the radar is right now. we have had a couple of tornadoes on the ground. we still have this red box underneath the radar. that's the watch that you mentioned until 2 a.m. we only had one warning. it's right there. if it holds together, it would move over i-20. but really, the rotation doesn't look that impressive right now. but there are big storms out there. there's wind, there's lightning. there's some hail tomorrow. there may be a little bit more, but saturday it really ramps up for another event. kind of like what we're having today. now let's move you ahead all the way to saturday. if you're driving up and down, i 95. well, make sure your wipers are working very, very well because there's an awful lot of rain involved. as we work our way into the afternoon, there will be some seve

meteorologist chad myers has more from the weather center. good morning chad. merry christmas. it was nice to see some snow on the ground in new york. uh, it doesn't all have to be in buffalo. >> i mean, we can spread it out in new york city a little bit. here's staten island, a little picture here. now, some of this did melt yesterday, and now we're down to 27. so watch out for slick spots. watch out for some icy spots. these are all the areas here that really did have a very white christmas. but now we're seeing a wet christmas down here across parts of louisiana. there could be some strong to even severe weather today, but i think the real risk is some flooding. but in flooding that has been parched with the drought over the past couple of months. so i guess you'll just take it when you can get it. just don't want it all to come down at one time. moving ahead to thursday. pretty good travel day. they'll be rain across parts of the south and also in the deep south itself. but then by the time we get into sunday, when a lot of you are going to try to get back on airplanes in n

cnn meteorologist chad myers is joining us right now. so what are you seeing this hour, chad?yeah, those things you just mentioned do not go with trouble free travel, that's for sure. it's raining in michigan. it's raining in wisconsin. and i mean, we're talking the end of december. shouldn't that be snow? no. we actually have the potential for severe weather across the deep south. this is a very warm storm for this time of year, and we're still seeing some thunder and lightning at this hour. but the big event will be tomorrow, wolf. down across the south. there may even be tornadoes on the ground. forecast here is likely likely even some bigger tornadoes that are going to be on the ground f twos and greater, and then on up to the north that will just spread the rainfall. but if we move into saturday, people are getting on the road, rain up and down i-95. there's the thunder and lightning across i-20 just to the west there of looks like nashville and also into birmingham. but then on sunday it doesn't get any better. we're still going to see the rain here across d.c., boston,

cnn meteorologist chad myers is joining us right now. so what are you seeing? what are you hearing? ad? >> well, really it is. it's louisiana, it's texas, maybe into arkansas later on tonight, we finally now have a new tornado warning. we were about two hours without one, but we're looking at them. and these storms are still rotating out there. it's like, when is the next one going to be issued? well, now the northern parishes of louisiana really are under the gun. so the red box here is the tornado watch. that means conditions are right. but houston, you're out of that watch now. but the warning on the next map, the pink area up here. this is the warning. this means that they're seeing rotation on the radar enough to think that a tornado could come down to the ground. so all the way from shreveport, all the way down still to east of houston. this is the threat tonight. but then we move ahead. let's just fast forward all the way to saturday, when a lot of people are going to be getting on the road. and on sunday as well. all of a sudden the rain is in the big cities all the way from

. >> cnn's meteorologist chad myers joins us now. chad, we're talking from the rockies to the northeast here. >> yeah, i mean, really, the rockies are going to get snow. great for skiing. so are the sierra. but for the meantime, for the next, maybe, i would say 12 to 24 hours. we're looking at the northeast because a little clipper coming across canada not going to do a lot. 1 to 2in of snow, but maybe an eighth of an inch of ice. that could be the problem by morning. so we're talking like 8 a.m. that could slow down the airports. we may have to do a little bit of deicing across some of those big northeast airports. this is what 8 a.m. looks like, at least with the computer model thinks, look, there's snow all the way from boston through new york and all the way down to d.c. and around d.c. there could even be this mix into an icy event. be careful with the first step that you take out the door tomorrow, because it could surprise you on this little accumulation. now, we're not talking ice storm. we're not talking trees down. we're tal

cnn's chad myers is in the weather center. chad, where's the threat right now?really just northeast of houston. that's where the two tornado warnings are that we're watching, kind of centered around liberty county northeast. but there was there was that storm you just saw right there. >> that tornado was on the ground just to the southwest of houston about two hours ago. the storm has completely disintegrated, but it is moving toward the north. there you can kind of see it there, hanging down from the cloud there. so some pictures there. we never want to see, especially in december. so here we go. let's get ready to the radar. here we will see the airport speed delayed. we'll also see this thunderstorm activity continue to move into louisiana later on this afternoon and into the evening. and there yes, there is a tornado watch in effect here for a large area. but the warning is what we're really worried about. those two warnings here. well, to the northeast now of houston proper and moving away, but eventually getting into really the bayous there of louisiana. a

chad myers has our christmas day forecast. chad. merry christmas to you. and let's start with the nice weather. how about that? not the naughty. because listen, millions finally got their white christmas, right? >> finally. i mean, here's a picture out of staten island. now, the problem is, it did get to 36 after this snow. so some of it melted and now it's 27. so some of it refroze. be careful with your first steps or your first couple of miles out there today. yes, we did have a white christmas that is one inch or more still on the ground christmas morning. and although a lot of it did melt off the roadways, a lot of it stuck to those grassy areas. so we'll take it. this is the area that had all the snow. i mean, obviously up north into into michigan, also into new york city. this morning, though, we are seeing some severe weather possible here into parts of southern louisiana. part of all the storm system, if you were had a bad night's sleep in houston, that's because there was lightning and thunder for most of the night, even toward college station yes

we have more details now on the forecast for today and into the weekend from cnn meteorologist chad myers. >> yeah. really three different stories for later today. rain in the great lakes. you'd expect there to be snow, but it's not cold enough. severe weather across the deep south and significant snow in the northern rockies. 2 to 3ft of snow in some places there in the northern rockies, pushing you ahead until tomorrow. we'll see rain up and down the east coast. a developing severe weather event here across just areas east of dallas but west of memphis. there it is right here, right centered over jackson, mississippi. this is the area that could even see the potential for a tornado or two. now, with all that said and done, we're still looking at 2 to 4in of rain. and many areas here do need the rain. but remember, we're still trying to clean up the mess from halloween here in the carolinas. they don't need more rainfall there. back out here with winter storm alerts, winter storm warnings in effect. also significant wind with that snow in places you have to watch out for. maybe some aval

cnn's meteorologist chad myers has the weekend forecast. >> right. couple of big things going on today across the deep south, severe weather. and there will be tornadoes across the pacific northwest. heavy, heavy rainfall and mountain snow that will be feet deep. let's talk about the severe weather first. this will be the biggest day of severe weather we've had in a very long time. and there's even the potential for tornadoes later on. today, f two tornadoes, fairly large tornadoes here in this orange area here that we call hatched. this is the area has the most risk of big tornadoes there for later on this afternoon, push you ahead to the afternoon. and the storms are already firing here. yes. it's raining up and down. i 95, but those are showers, not big storms. and then in the afternoon and even into the overnight when you may be sleeping here, louisiana, mississippi, alabama, maybe even to georgia and tennessee, that's the time of night that we could still see tornadoes on the ground. when you are sleeping, make sure you have a way to get the war

cnn meteorologist chad myers has the forecast for you. >> certainly, there will be rain in new york city, without a doubt. >> i mean, it may not be only right at midnight, maybe starting 9:00 10:00, showers on and off. >> there may even be a little bit of thunder and lightning. moving ahead, though, to 7 a.m. coming up here. rain in chicago all the way down toward indianapolis. rain. not snow on the backside. there will be some snow, but more of a nuisance than anything else. now. right around midnight we could see some snow around detroit, maybe toward flint. some of those areas just to the west of detroit proper itself, and even maybe some snow showers for effect in chicago. but temperatures won't be that cold and really not cold anywhere. dc right around 50 degrees, and that's a midnight temperature. new york city 50 degrees as well. back out toward the southwest, though, paying attention toward the santa ana winds, now maybe 40 to 50mph here. we certainly don't want any fireworks going off here. starting fires with a wind of 40 to 50mph. so please be careful or don't even do it at al

cnn's chad myers is live in the cnn extreme weather center for us. so chad, this warning has now been canceled. but what can you tell us about the threat from the 7.0 quake? >> well, there still was certainly damage there. fort bragg crescent city, eureka, maybe even seeing a little bit 20,000 customers now already without power. so something was shaking. i've seen video on social media of of pools sloshing back and forth on land. also, things falling off store shelves. but it was a very large 7.0, and we're still now a very shallow quake. now the difference between a tsunami creating shake and possibly just a regular slip strike, earthquake is will the land on the bottom of the ocean bounce up or go down? and when that happens, you've displaced an awful lot of water that displaced water makes its way onto the shore as that tsunami. so for now, with the tsunami warning being canceled, there are tsunami warnings. they are gone. they were here earlier all the way from oregon, all the way down to san francisco. it was still a big quake. they're still goi

chad myers is in the cnn weather center tracking it all for us. chad, great to see you. what are you tracking there on this christmas day? >> you know, a lot of melting snow across parts of the northeast. and i know that's probably sad for the snowmen that were built, but it's sad because we're going to see ice, that temperatures are going to get down below 32 after dark. so if the road looks wet and you're driving around at 7:00 at night, it's not wet. that is likely ice on the roadways. so be careful they're not melting any snow in minnesota, not melting any snow in wisconsin. it is still cold enough out there. there could be some severe weather tomorrow across arkansas and parts of louisiana. they'll take the rain, but we don't need all of that severe weather potential. and then as we look ahead to sunday, this is when so many people are going to be trying to get back home. they're going to take this storm. we're going to move it into boston, new york, dc and atlanta. all the big airports where people are trying to get either out through or two. and so, yes, this is g

let's get over to chad myers, who's tracking all of it for us. a technical white christmas in new york city. what are you seeing, chad? >> a little bit of snow still left in the grass. that's really about it. but the problem is it got to about 36in new york city and also down to philly yesterday, but down to 27 overnight. so there are some icy patches out there. so not the only place where we saw the white christmas in parts of minnesota, wisconsin, even into north dakota. a wet christmas down in parts of louisiana. this will be the story of the day. some spots could pick up 2 to 3in of rain. now it's a very dry drought area, so we'll take the rain when we can get it. we just don't need 5 or 6in over baton rouge all at one time. the storm does move to the east. we get some rain a little bit farther to the east tomorrow, but that rain really gets to the northeast, where the airports are on sunday, so that may be a little bit on the slow side. when you get to your sunday morning flights. with all of that rain and all of that cloud cover from new yor

cnn meteorologist chad myers has more on the changing weather this holiday season minneapolis got quite bit of snow up to five inches in some spots there on thursday. >> more snow in detroit on friday. also into boston. kind of an overachiever there in boston. but the snow has finally moved away. now only cold air will be coming in behind that low pressure center. cold north winds for sure. still some snow, but really no places that are going to pick up more than a half a foot really. you see a couple of spots here with the purple, but that's still even on the timeline. not all that much. something i want you to do today if you're traveling over 110 million of you will be in a car traveling. this is the lowest sun angle day of the year. winter solstice, which means if you're driving to the east in the morning, to the west at night, or to the south at any time during the day, the sun will be right into your car, right into your eyes. please. i did it today. please do it before you leave. clean the inside and the outside of your car's windshield. it will help tremendously with that low su

let's get back to chad myers. he's back with us and tracking it all. let's start first with who's seeing a white christmas, and then also what people need to watch out for. >> happy everything to you too, by the way. >> thank you chad. >> i did appreciate that all encompassing happy because it is a happy day. we're not we're not seeing any snow now east of the mississippi. the snow is in the rockies, where hopefully the skiers are enjoying it. but up here toward the northeast, we still have a little snow on the ground. much of it melted yesterday in the lower elevations in new york city, philadelphia, and then refroze overnight. so watch for any slick spots. if you're walking outside this morning. but certainly a white christmas for minneapolis, a wet christmas for new orleans all the way down toward baton rouge, seeing some heavier rainfall, possibly even with a little bit of lightning involved here. we'll take the rainfall there because it's been such a drought ridden year for the deep south there, the lower mississippi. so 2 to 4in of rain is really

meteorologist chad myers explains this. >> we've all seen weather maps that look just like this, but do we know it's going to be clear in texas? well, the weather models tell us this. we look at them, and this is one that i made a long time ago. i was an intern with the national weather service in silver spring, maryland, 39 years ago. and this is what the weather model looked like. now we use some human intelligence and sorted that celsius to fahrenheit and kind of figured some things out and knew it was going to be a 55 degree low. but then supercomputers took over and everything changed. it wasn't just digits, it wasn't just numbers. now we could make graphics, now we could take all of this data and push it forward five, seven days make it so much better. but this was still human intelligence. now we have artificial intelligence. this is what our model looks like right now. this is how good we've come from. just numbers to this. but can artificial intelligence make this even better, make it more accurate? and the answer so far is yes. the google cast looks like out to 15 days. it
