i want to bring in cnn meteorologist chad myers now. what is this storm doing right now?s more snow going to fall? >> yes. more snow that's in west virginia right now will come through d.c. , philadelphia, wilmington, maybe up to a light sprinkle or just a dusting for new york city. but our gabe cohen is actually right there. that's where he was. 28 degrees right now on earth cam. windchill is still below 20 degrees. we've got some new numbers in here. georgetown, delaware, you're the winner on the east coast but numbers are coming in and they'll continue to come in throughout the evening. one foot of snow for you. foot and a half for chatman, and the ice, we talked about that, half an inch of ice on tree limbs, power lines. over 300,000 even right now still without power. here's the next area of snow. this is the tail, this is the head of the low pressure center. this is kind of a dry slot that came through earlier, cut our snow off for d.c. and philadelphia a little earlier. still, the powdery snow behind it, that light, fluffy snow that's going to blow around. at least

let's bring meteorologist chad myers. tell us what's going on with the forecast. >> there are still more fire starts going on right now. most of them are very small. they start out at five, ten, 20 acres, but with the wind they can grow very, very quickly. and look at what's happened now to the power customers without power, 1.5 million. so right up on top of the trails, on top of the mountains. yes, we had those wind gusts. they were 100mph. the gusts came from the desert. the desert got cold last night. and when a hot air balloon goes up, it's because it's hot. when the desert gets cold, the air sinks. when the air sinks, it hits the ground. it can't go any farther. it has to go somewhere. and it goes out through the canyons. and this is why the wind picks up in southern california at night. doesn't do it anyplace else. middle of nebraska, the well over 25,000 acres that are already burning. and that's wh at 20 to 30mph, that's still making sparks fly. you really want to be down below 5 or 10mph. but the good news is, at

we have cnn meteorologist chad myers joining us now. and, chad, the national weather service just said that strong gusts of wind will soon be picking up again. what are you seeing in the forecast? right. >> you know, i could see a 40, maybe a 45 mile per hour gust, and it's still better. i think we've always been talking about better. yes. better than 80. better than 90 or 100. like we had during the true firestorm. but there will be gusty winds today making it difficult for those air drops to actually hit the location that they're trying to drop. here's what we're talking about for this afternoon. this is about two hours from now l.a. proper, around 34 mile per hour. gusts not sustained but gusts. and i don't believe that they'll be high enough that they have to ground the helicopters altogether. they'll still be making drops. but when you see the water come out of the bottom of the helicopter, it just turns to mist. it's not this big dump of water like they really like. now, tomorrow is a much better day, without a doubt. especially to

meteorologist chad myers has the latest forecast. chad, let's talk about this major snowstorm on the way. what are you seeing? >> a couple of things. right now. >> we have a snow globe that when you got it for christmas, you took it and you spun it like this and made all the snow go sideways. >> that's utica. >> that's barrie, ontario, that's really the cattaraugus chautauqua counties of buffalo. this is the first event that we're getting into right now, and there are winter storm watches and warnings posted in the areas. you likely know that there goes the snow. we could see a little bit of snow even in d.c. tomorrow morning. not enough to really do much, but enough for some effect. >> getting on the grassy surfaces. >> and then the next storm system for the weekend starts to ramp up. and this thing is still in the rockies, so we still don't have a perfect idea yet. but anywhere from the ohio valley through tennessee, all of ohio, indiana, that's a lot of snow coming down. there could be places models are putting out 16in of snow, an

let's go to our meteorologist, chad myers, in the cnn weather center. chad. when is it anticipated that the windstorm might die down and allow the firefighters to get in there and really contain these fires? >> the picture you just showed jake was the best thing that could happen. >> it means the helicopters are now able to fly. so the winds you see behind me 80, 90, 100mph. they are gone. and when that was happening, the helicopters, the firefighting crews could not at all get up in the air. they were all grounded. so now that we know there's a chopper here in the sky, we know that there's fire. one, two, three and four. i've seen that on flightradar24. they are in the air. they will be able to start the air attack because now for i don't know, it must be 15 hours. there hasn't been an air attack. there's been no water, no phos-chek being dropped and everything was on the ground. so now that we have the winds dying off a little bit, now it's just enough to get those firefighters in the air, dropping water and really helping out the entire situation. as the w

meteorologist chad myers joining us now from the cnn weather center. ad, we have talked for hours now about the winds, the wind conditions, how that impacts what these firefighters are having to do and change the changes, their tactics. what do the conditions look like right now? >> now that we have sunset, now the desert is going to get cold again. it's going to be a pretty cool night in l.a. as well. but as the desert gets cold, unlike a rising hot air balloon, a cooling atmosphere begins to come down toward the ground and so the pressure gets a little bit higher. and then all of a sudden that air has to go somewhere and it goes out through the mountain, passes out through and into places that we don't need more wind. but this is a very. disconcerting map behind me. i've moved it ahead now to 3 a.m., a 43 forecast mile per hour wind gusts in malibu at that hour. and i know so much damage has already been done in malibu for two fires, but now we're still seeing the wind come out of the mountains at night. this is how it happens. and then tomorrow the w

meteorologist chad myers is joining us from the cnn weather center. chad, tell us more about about these wind threats. >> sure. the psps is about turning the power off to the power lines before a branch knocks that power line off and creates more sparks. we just don't need more sparks. there are plenty of them out there. the air pressure between the high and the low tightening up a little bit right now. so the wind is about to get a little bit higher. so likely in the 20 to 30 mile per hour range. and that's a decent santa ana by itself. but on the ridge tops jessica we could be talking 40 to 45mph as we work our way into tomorrow morning. so even here, here's 8:00 tonight, pacific palisades, you're at 22mph, and we don't need those numbers that high, because i just looked at radar. and you can look at your local radar, too. your doppler radar. you can actually see the ash on the radar. if you look, you can see it streaming into the ocean. well, when it was really burning earlier this week, you could see it burning. you could see those those ash partic

cnn's chad myers is tracking the wind patterns for us. and, chad, these winds need to die down if the firefighters are going to have any hopes of putting out these fires, tell us more. >> and die down, laid down. that really happens tomorrow. i mean, we're talking three, four, six miles per hour tomorrow, but not today. follow the arrow here from about the northern parts of the mountains. they'll come over. those wind gusts will come over the mountains and down toward the ocean in an hour or so. now, that will not be enough to slow down the helicopters for sure. and even the big dc ten is in the air dumping that phos-chek right now. so great news. we have air assets out there, not enough wind to slow them down. now, when you're blowing and dropping water and the wind is 25, it doesn't always land where you want it to. but look at tomorrow. every color is gone. the winds have shifted directions a little bit, jake. but you know what? we'll take the ten and 11 when those air drops can be right on the money. >> all right, chad myers, thanks so

chad myers is standing by from the cnn weather center. chad, there are reports of wind gusts over 80mph in that palisades area. how quickly is this fire spreading? >> well, we're at five football fields per minute, and i think for a while that was even ramped up from there when it was burning some of the wild land areas. but we have wind gusts that are over hurricane force. and tonight will be the worst night. 95% of the world. the winds die off at night. not here because of what we have in the great basin. we have a desert out here. that desert gets very cold. and think about, like taking a bucket of water and pouring it on the ground. when it hits the ground, it spreads out rather quickly. well, when this cold air hits the ground that is generated in the night time, it also spreads out like a big bottle of water hitting the ground. those winds are going to go through the canyons, and those winds are going to pick up tonight from that devastating wind that you saw. nick, what have there in pacific palisades? we still have the red flag war

meteorologist chad myers is in the weather center monitoring these conditions. and chad, we were just hearing from stephanie firsthand experience. she's saying the winds are picking up where she is in that in the brentwood neighborhood, that she's starting to feel that begin to shift. >> absolutely. a strong santa night. another this 85 to 100 mile per hour event, people aren't really taking this as seriously as they should. a 40 to 45 mile per hour santa ana event is a major event for wind, for fires. and think about all the embers we already have on the ground. it's the antecedent conditions that we have. it's dry, it's windy, and then all of a sudden you already have these embers, tree roots that are still glowing red, but you don't see it because the ground is kind of bright in the daytime. well, as soon as the night falls, then you see all of that red. and as we get into tonight, winds are going to be 20 to 30 and then gusting to 40 to 45. look at tomorrow morning, malibu. this is the gusts of 43. that's just a pinpoint. there are so many spots now with the

right now i want to go to our meteorologist, chad myers. he's over at the cnn weather center with the latest fire forecast. chad, update our viewers on the winds. first of all, fueling fueling these horrible fires. >> the winds will be half of what they were last night. and that seems like it's good. but that just means that it's going to be 30 and 40, not 60 to 80. and that's certainly still enough to push those embers, as you could see in all of those pictures, 1.5 million now, customers without power in los angeles. the morning low tonight will be 53. so 93 point something thousand just in l.a. northeast county proper. but 935,000 people out of about 4 million in l.a. will not have power tonight, will not have heat tonight. likely. the winds did gust to 100mph. they were well over. certainly hurricane strength. how did it happen and why did it happen at night? because 95% of the globe, when the sun sets, the winds die off. it doesn't happen like that. all of a sudden, here in the great basin, which is the desert, when the desert cools off

meteorologist chad myers is in the cnn weather center looking at these conditions. and chad, these winds, the santa ana's are what's driving so much of this. walk us through what you're watching, what you're seeing, really. >> it's the setup that we've had all week, jessica. high pressure, let's call it north of las vegas, because you know where that is. and then a low pressure near baja california. and because those two were so strong, but oppositely opposed, the wind came through the canyons. and that's how we got here. this is how any santa ana happens. but the fact that this was an 85 to 100 mile per hour santa ana wind event means that the high was too high and the low was too low, and that pressure just ripped right through those canyons and right over the mountains. so we are in the 10 to 15 mile per hour range right now, but by 4:00, 5:00 local time, those numbers are probably going to be 20 to 30mph. and then by overnight tonight, we could go all the way to 40. so this is the issue we're talking about. this is the issue we're having is that the wind is going

let's get right to cnn meteorologist chad myers and chad, the winds and the dry conditions continue to fuel these fires. >> yep, yep. >> and today, jake, the winds are from a slightly different direction. so what the firefighters were planning on the wind going this way now. going this way. so what? the firefighters have to get away from the head of the fire, because now there's a new head of the fire talking about the palisades. 8% containment. it wouldn't surprise me. i just looked it up. i tried to find it wouldn't surprise me that that containment is because it's right up against the pacific ocean. it's not going to burn any farther than that. eaton fire there 3%. so here's the wind direction. it's been this direction all week long, from northeast to southwest. look at the arrows now, coming back onto the firefighters from the other direction. that can really fuel more fires that were almost out, because now there's oxygen to the other head of the fire, now the new head of the fire that was almost burned out. and then by the time we look at this, this is sunday after midnight, satu

cnn meteorologist chad myers has the details. >> later on. today will be the last day to be traveling for a while, and certainly in spots all the way from kansas, all the way to the east coast. a very long big snow and ice storm is developing. today is still going to be okay. it will start going downhill in kansas in the afternoon, but tomorrow is the day you absolutely do not want to be traveling. so we take you to 10:00 saturday. all the lake effect snow really gone except for one streamer somewhere around utica. but here's what we're looking at back out to the west. south of omaha, all the way through kansas city. ice and snow. depending on your temperature, the accumulations here across the great lakes are just about done, but the accumulations with the next storm system here will just be starting by sunday at 9 a.m. notice this storm from almost denver all the way to the east to about maybe paducah, lexington, all the way down to knoxville. that's where the white area is. and then the ice to the south of there, and then it just rains sou

meteorologist chad myers is with us now. you see the air assets with these, you know, fire retardants and water. but i mean, it's so vast and there are so many fires. and now with the winds terrible. >> and when we when we use those air assets and the winds are blowing 30 or 40, it's hard to get that phos-chek on the ground in a straight line. it just turns into a mist. so we don't get the real effort that this phos-chek should be able to do. let's just go ahead and take a look at these pictures. there's a couple of things to talk about here. one, the smoke still is vertical. it is still rising in the air. we will know when the winds pick up today and they will when all of this lays over and it blows completely out toward the ocean in a big flat line, that means that there's not enough time for the smoke to rise. and all of a sudden it's just blowing expecting winds today to be e about 40mph later on this afternoon. this to me looks like about ten miles per hour. you see the smoke as it's still going up. that is good news. t

here's cnn's meteorologist chad myers with that forecast. >> the wind forecast is better. i mean, better than this, better than hurricane force wind gusts. but we're still going to be 20 to 30 with a gust of 40. but unlike yesterday when we had the perfect setup out here with the high pressure over the great basin, the cold air, because of the clear skies coming down at night, the entire high pressure getting higher pressure and exhaling through the canyons, through the mountains and making all those winds of those almost hurricane force. certainly in some spots there were hurricane force and above. not going to get there tonight. so 20 to 30. but the fire starts are already here. so the problem we would have had damage with the wind anyway, but it wouldn't have been such damage had we not had the sparks. had we not had the fire starts. well, now there are millions of hotspots on this map, so any fire, any ember, any additional fire push could actually make more fires. of course. still extreme for tonight all the way through the morning hours. but then by later on this aft

meteorologist chad myers is here. and chad, how big is this storm going to be? >> it is going to be very disruptive. there are so many interstates that are in the way of an ice storm of a snowstorm. could be two feet of snow, could be a half inch of ice, a half inch of ice will bring down power lines, bring down trees. >> now, the snow we're seeing now outside just kind of for effect. this is not the storm. the storm is just now developing in the colorado rockies. >> and it will move across into nebraska and kansas overnight tonight. >> if you need to be somewhere on sunday, you need to get there tomorrow. that's how busy this will be and how bad this is going to be. 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. we can still get places. things are okay. you can still get back home. but by sunday morning, all of a sudden, this is a wide system. 700 miles at this point. now we're talking 1300 miles by sunday night. and by monday morning, when you thought you were going back to work in d.c. and philadelphia and baltimore, that may not be the case. maybe not even going to school, not go

let's get back to gabe cohen and chad myers. how is it out there and has the snow started to pick back up? >> reporter: we have really seen it pick back up over the last couple of hours but even as it is getting dark, we are seeing a lot of people coming out to the national mall to experience what is really a rare snowstorm in d.c. the biggest we have seen in years. there are at least 5 inches of snow right now on the ground. we are expecting a couple more tonight. that's why the snow warning is in effect in d.c. as well as those emergency declarations here in washington and in at least six other concern right now about safety in this region. tha's why we are seeing a lot of school districts go ahead and say they are going to stay closed tomorrow because even as crews clear all of this snow, they are concerned about ice d about the frigid temperatures. >> chad, how dangerous is this arctic blast? >> the air behind this will be the coldest we have experienced since last year. but we are not talking about historic cold temperature

. >> let's check in now with cnn meteorologist chad myers. chad, this is not great news. take a look for us at these conditions and what this is going to mean for those gusts are mainly in the mountain areas above 3000 and 4000ft. >> not really where the fires are at this point in time, but something else that's happening today that's not good is that you'll notice these arrows as we work our way through the forecast. they kind of change direction. we're talking to a police chief. fire chief last hour saying, you know what, hey, when they switch directions, all of a sudden our firefighters can be out of position because the winds are blowing in the wrong direction. so yes, it will be gusty today. tomorrow is a completely different story. every wind here begins to go down, but also every arrow changes direction as the fire moves off toward the east in places that we don't want it to move off to the east for sure, especially when you're talking palisades fire and the next town over is santa monica. so the humidity is going to go up, the winds are going to go down, things wi

cnn's chad myers has the forecast. >> yeah, a couple of things going on today, but really more of a tranquily than what we're going to be seeing in the next coming days. some rain and snow here, mainly snow along the lakes. lake effect snow, but very windy conditions all the way from upstate new york. all the way down. every single one of the big airports for today will be windy. may get some delays for sure. the snow will likely be along the lakes and also into the appalachian mountains. temperatures are going to cool down and cool down significantly as this below average temperature drops all the way down to the gulf coast. i mean, you're going to be below freezing all the way down to the gulf coast in places. we'll watch the storm come onshore in the pacific northwest, roll through the middle part of the country. rain, snow, sleet, and yes, maybe even some ice storms going on here. but now this is pushing you ahead to quite a few days. things to still look forward to. or maybe not if you're traveling, but you still have time to get prepared for this rain, snow, sleet and then maybe, possi

. >> meteorologist chad myers is joining us live now from the cnn weather center. as we are looking there at some pretty amazing video of aerial firefighting going on there in in the i think that might be the palisades area, but i'm not for sure. it could be the it is the palisades area there. chad. >> it's it's higher than that. it's, it's it's farther north than that, kind of up toward the mountains. not really. calabasas, but. yes. and what you see here is this is the plane with the phos-chek in it, but it is following a lead plane. there's a plane that it's a much smaller plane, and it's following that and it will tell. the lead plane will tell this phos-chek retardant plane when to release the phos-chek phos-chek. it's red because there's red dye. because they want to know where it has already been dropped and not drop another load on top of what is already there. and they can make a long line of that red phos-chek. it's really just fertilizer, water and red dye and it completely smothers the ability for the flames to continue. i don't know who came up with th

cnn meteorologist chad myers looks at why they pose so much danger in the days ahead. >> santa ana winds happen all the time, but the one that we had on monday was extraordinary. 85 to 100mph. unheard of. but what we're seeing now is even a 45 mile per hour santa ana wind will do certainly some damage because we have so many sparks that are already out there by morning hours here. i mean, we have. at 43, 45 mile per hour gusts. now, this is a transverse range. this is a mountain range up here. you're always going to see color here because it's on top of the mountain. that's kind of how the model is going to run this. but we kind of die off a little bit. have a lighter day on monday, but then again tuesday and wednesday. look at the colors as we bring them back all the way through wednesday and even into thursday. these deep reds are not what we're looking for when we already have embers on the ground. so for today, critical for tomorrow, critical. tuesday, wednesday. the same story. now that's a level two of three. when we had the firestorm, we were of three of three. and it's not going

our meteorologist, chad myers, has more and we've already had hurricane force wind gusts in places here in southern california, especially on the mountain tops. >> but here's what happens in the desert. unlike everywhere else in america, when the sun goes down, the winds die off here because of the cold air that's going to sink down into the desert. that cold air is going to splash onto the dirt, and it's going to spread out. well, where does it spread out? well, kind of in all directions. but when it spreads out through the canyons, that's when the winds actually pick up in the dark, which doesn't make any sense for most of you as you're watching this, but it happens here. so red flag warnings still going. winds were 40 to 60, but they could go from 60 to 80 overnight. so we're going to have to keep watching this now by later on this afternoon somewhere around 4:00. things are going to calm down. but that is a long time from right now for the highest class here of fire weather. the extremely critical warnings here. category three of three here across parts of southern california. the f
