chad pergram is live with more.s of what mcconnell wants, can the senate confirm someone before the election? >> reporter: let's let history be our guide here. it takes an average of 40-45 days for a nominee to get a hearing, so if you're going to try to do this by the election, you know, we're right on the cusp of that, day 45 before the election right now. usually about 67-70 days before they actually get a confirmation vote. so that would be, again, if we look at precedent here, that would be late november, early december. the other thing you have to look at is whether or not they have the votes. and this is going to be a tight vote in the unite senate. right now -- united states senate. right now it's 53-47 in favor of republicans, and the two senators i would look at first, susan collins of maine and lisa murkowski of alaska. susan collins is facing a competitive re-election bid, and she's indicated she i thinks it might be premature to move a nominee, same with lisa murkowski who was initially opposed to brett

let's go live to fox news congressional correspondent chad pergram with answers tonight. chad? >> hey, laura. here's the average time that you have when someone is nominated for the supreme court before they get a hearing. about 40 to 45 days. in terms of nomination to confirmation, the average is 67 to 71 days. so even to get a confirmation hearing in just before the election, if they do the vetting process, a lifetime appointment, they're really on the cusp there. it's hard to see how they could ram this through before an election. brett kavanaugh, the most recent justice put on the supreme court, 57 days before he had a hearing. 89 days before he was confirmed. now let's look at the parliamentary math. in terms of trying to confirm this justice. break down in the senate right now is 53 republicans, 47 democrats. they can lose two. lisa murkowski, she indicated she does not think that they should fill this seat until after inauguration day. so down to 52. and then let's say this vote were to happen before the election. what happens with susan collins from maine? republican se

we have been trying, i can tell you myself and edward lawrence, chad pergram as well trying to get thead had been reporting $500 billion. you remember a couple weeks ago i had told you we had been hearing that figure, about $500 billion skinny bill, if you want to call it that. there is also a $454 billion figure in there. we are still trying to figure it out is my short answer but we believe it's in the $450 billion to $500 billion range. in any event, it is still going to very much likely face resistance among republicans, this bill put forth by mitch mcconnell because as you know, there are some republicans who argue that we don't need any more spending going forward. they cite several reasons why. first off, the national debt. $26.7 trillion. you can see the figures as they pick up by the seconds there. also, when you dig deeper than that, the congressional budget office has predicted the deficit in 2020 will reach an historic $3.3 trillion. individual tax bills expected to shrink 11%. corporate profits expected to take a plunge by 34%, when you talk about the tax bill the federal

joining us now with more on how tonight's sad news is being received on capitol hill, chad pergram isith us. all things hitchhikers guide to the supreme court right now. chad? >> hey, sean. here's what we have to look at here. mitch mcconnell, the senate majority leader, came out here within a matter of a few minutes after it was announced that justice ginsberg had died. this is similar to what he did in 2016 after justice antonin scalia passed away. mitch mcconnell unilaterally in 2016 announced they would not consider merrick garland or whoever president obama was putting forth. what he announced this evening, he says "president trump's nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the united states senate." there's metrics here that we need to pay attention to. the average supreme court nominees once they're nominated until they get to hearing is about 40 days, 40 to 45 days. it's 67 days from their nomination until they are confirmed. other metrics here with brett kavanaugh, 57 days from his nomination till his hearing and 89 to confirmation. so you can see we're on the with uswheth
