neil: chad pergram, thank you very, very much. there are a number of key things missing from this as chad touched on including that liability protection that mitch mcconnell had been hoping to see and that keep as lot of businesses pretty vulnerable here. kristina partsinevelos following that and impact it is having in places like, well, new york city. hey, christina. reporter: neil, exactly businesses did not receive legal liability against covid-19 lawsuits in the second stimulus package. so businesses are concerned that they may be sued left and right if employees or customers get sick on their premises. for example, already according to the lawsuit tracker andrews, hunter andrews, they found already over 6700 complaints filed against businesses across america pertaining to covid-19 as well as hundreds of lawsuits. more specifically tyson foods is facing a wrongful death lawsuit after a worker at the waterloo, iowa plant contracted covid-19 and passed away. those larger firms may be able to incur the larger more expensive legal

now it seems like a herculean task and it might still be but chad pergram has been following it very closely, joins us from capitol hill. where do they stand on both of these measures? reporter: well it's going to take probably until the middle of next week to get everything done and here's why. they don't have agreement yet on the government funding bill and they certainly don't have agreement on the overall coronavirus stimulus package that will probably take another week to jell. so what they're going to do later this week is probably put together an interim spending bill to keep the government open, the government funding deadline is this friday night 11:59:59 p.m. on december 11th that would be a stop gap. they try to marry these two bills together sometime next week if they get an agreement, i say it again if they get an agreement on the coronavirus part. there is concern about coronavirus protection mainly from bill cassidy, a republican from louisiana. >> there has to be some liability protection. it has to be something, something we negotiate that is acceptable to both. fran

we're live with chad pergram on capitol hill. what is the latest, chad? reporter: mitch mcconnell, the senate majority leader says he doesn't want a messaging bill. he wants to make law. he wants a piece of legislation which can earn the signature of the president of the united states. why he is pushing this 550 billion-dollar so-called skinny bill. he is working with the treasury secretary steve mnuchin who was testifying here on capitol hill here today on the house side and was asked about that at the hearing this morning. listen. >> i would encourage congress, particularly over the next few weeks in the lame duck, try to get something done. >> i would advise the president to get involved and get off the golf course. reporter: mnuchin also said he believed that the concept of traditional direct payments was dead. a coalition of bipartisan senators are pushing 908 billion-dollar coronavirus package. doubt that plan could get 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. some republicans don't like there is $160 billion in that bill for state and local governments.
