heard yesterday in land use and discussed extensively, over five hours of public comments, thank chair peskin and supervisor safai for listening to the public comments yesterday. absent this legislation there can be little doubt that when the eviction moratorium that we have in place that is temporary expires, there will be thousands of filings to give tenants notice that they have three days to pay rent or quit, and what would follow as the "new york times" recently predicted is an avalanche of eviction, unprecedented in scale and in harm. we need to do everything in our power to avoid that fate. that's the intent of this straightforward change to chapter 37 of the administrative code before you today. add as defense of nonpayment eviction, showing the tenant experienced income loss due to covid-19 or expenses. in effect, it would permanently take nonpayment eviction off the table for san francisco renters struggling to pay back rent due during the state of emergency. in addition, prohibits late fees, penalties, interest or other charges to tenants related to delayed rent. no person unable t

chair, supervisor peskin, has dedicated his career to that. i know i've dedicated my career to that. i know supervisor preston cares about that. we're looking at this through the lens of the workforce and pulling on their experiences and what they have done in this industry. so when we talk about the current practice right now of leaving an option to guess whether they want their room cleaned, that's a current practice. to remove that and say to move to another step to say that rooms don't need to be cleaned, that is something that the hotel industry has wanted for many years. and that's not something that we would support in this legislation. in fact, we say that rooms should be cleaned daily whether a guest decides not to. office buildings need a significant amount of disinfect ants and cleaning in all common years. there will be thoughtful amendments made today on the amount of times that should happen. those are reasonable. but at the end of the day, we want to elevate and ensure that the workers and the workforce are protected. as we've s

one thing you can do is to partner with supervisor peskin, who is chair of the t.a. board and has also been one of the leaders of the downtown congesti congestion pricing study that the m.t.a. is running. those supervisors as well as the m.t.a. board can present a resolution supporting us at the regional level as well as you have the opportunity to reach out to other key deciders, including the metro transportation commission acting as the toll authority and the golden gate bridge district board. as you point out, it is the golden gate bridge district that has the ability to act in the quickest and boldest way, but they will need to hear from other policy makers about the necessity of changing policies now. both to manage crushing congestion as well as to create the necessary revenue to provide better alternatives for people. so whatever direction this board would like to provide us, we are happy to hear. we also encourage you to collaborate at the political level if possible. >> thank you. director eaken? >> thank you. if, as i've heard rodney fong say, that there's
