as wz just mentioned i'm jeff chamberlain, i'm a scientist from argonne national laboratory. i appreciate everyone coming here on such a beautiful day like it is today and coming inside to listen to us talk. i happen to work at a national laboratory, and what that is is a place where your tax dollars are invested to do things for the nation. it happens to be research. and mostly it's very fundamental research aimed at enabling the development of technology that will change our lives. not only our day-to-day lives, but change our lives in terms of gross domestic product in this country, and jobs, et cetera. since we're a little limited on time is to dive right into the conversation if you're all right with that, steve. okay. and maybe to finish a little bit of an introduction, if you haven't read the book yet, this is actually quite a surreal thing happening right now. and i hope you have read or will read the book and enjoy the surrealty, if that's a word, of what you're witnessing, because i am a character in the book that steve writes about. glad to get some chuckles there

we are approaching table and rock -- chamberlain rock, it was moved from the lakeshore. coming up on the wing tip of a bird effigy mound built here around 1000 years ago. effigy mounds are difficult to photograph. every time they see a camera, they sink into the earth and hide. they are not spectacular or prominent, but they are special. the wing tip extends towards us, the head is in the far distance near the sidewalk and fence. the body comes down the hill towards the lakeshore. the other wing is out of sight on the other side of the body of the mound. we are looking at the bird effigy from a different perspective. the body is extending down the slope. the wings extends to each side as if it is flying up towards the top of the hill. these can be considered a kind of tombstone. they mark the grades of the dead --graves of the dead. they are carved in the shapes of spirits. not everyone got a mound. and sometimes cremations. there is no indication a mound was built. some people got mounds, but had to share. some had simple, dome shaped construction. there seems to be som
