i'm emma chandra. top executives from companies reporting earnings spoke with bloomberg throughout the week, and the conversation to go macro -- took a macro turn discussions of economic headwinds and political uncertainty and cloudy forecast for global growth in the eu and china. let's start with the hsbc chief financial officer, who talked about the bank's overall outlook with manus cranny. >> how did the china slowdown manifest itself in your numbers? >> it was surprising to see that at all in 2018 numbers. we had revenue growth in hong kong, 14% in mainland china, and international customer revenues were up 7% for the year. i think we are seeing some credit softness is in the u.k., and the uk's the market i would be more concerned about at the moment than hong kong. >> you have capital to deploy i -- in the u.k. i hear you are rapidly trying to grow market share. is that hard in the current environment? >> no, the team did a great job last year. revenues were up 7% in the u.k., mortgage growth at 1

chandra has more. emma: they were broadly in line with estimates.e driven lower by last month's announcement of holiday sales. the full-year not looking great. below estimates. also seeing owned and licensed comp sales flat. they had been expected to be 2%. take a look at the terminal. i have the same store sales chart. they did put in a fifth consecutive quarter of sales growth but the trajectory is downward. investors not liking that. now looking at the shares in the premarket, roundabout flat. investors like plans to slim down management. will be focusing on new economic models this year , including the number of in-store pop-ups. they are trying to create a sense of better experience within macy's stores and a bit more of the marketplace way of finding new and exciting products at macy's. a couple of other retailers to mention. home depot were out with earnings earlier this morning. they increase their dividend amount -- their dividend by back. the stock of home depot rising 50% in the past three years but they missed today. did really well. exp

we turn now to emma chandra.he president always like to tell the performances of stocks but how have stocks done in his presidency? emma: take a look at the terminal chart on the bloomberg. it shows all the major indexes since the election, plus the russell 2000. they have done pretty well, if you're looking at the nasdaq, that is up 40% since the election. tech is the best sector performance wise. also looking and broad gains for the s&p 500 for the small caps, russell 2000. in this run-up, this is the first year when we had the impact of tax cuts. a big cut in corporation taxes there. a little bit of volatility this time last year. and in the last three months of last year, the s&p actually ended for the year down. it has been pretty good over the first two years of the presidency. vonnie: you have to wonder if investors will be looking for something proactive from the if what we have heard will be enough to keep the positive sentiment going. what about sectors? emma: there is some concern that with a divided c

anna: mo chandra talking about -- emma chandra talking about what to expect from walmart.r is still with us. let's talk about the strength or weakness of the u.s. consumer. i've a chart that underlies the u.s. retail sales plunge we saw last week. you have had a little time to digest the data. do you dismiss it as a glitch or do you think this does augur badly? glitch, we have seen a few as the chart shows. perhaps it is one of those. the holiday season with black friday in november than december, the shift to online, perhaps it is not reflected in the numbers. there is a whole cottage industry about the changes in how we collect the data. you can always find a way to excuse it. it was a pretty bad number. it shaved a few tenths off of the gdp forecast in q4. when it comes to this, we've had the physical expansion in the u.s. and we may conceive -- the fiscal expansion in the u.s. and we may see more. to getonald trump agrees his border wall funding. maybe that leads to -- or there is a pickup in china. ,hen it comes to trading this in the slowdown -- economists are not gr

we're joined by emma chandra to dig into what is fourth-quarter numbers and news of a separation in theompany. let's start with the numbers. they are ugly when you look at sales. old navy flatlining. emma: that is right. in terms of the numbers, not great when it comes to gap. the expectation is that they would not be as good, but old navy has been the upper former for gap for a long time to the fact that they are not doing quite as well and not great. the fact they are being spun off, a lot of people like that. joe: why? now you can invest in the growth of the company more directly, but it was always there. what is it about the combined company now worth 14% more than it was half an hour ago? emma: i was speaking with bloomberg intelligence and one of the things they were saying navy, itf gap and old was in the broader portfolio of brands. on its own, it will get a much better fail value. the analyst community has wanted this for a long time. romaine: talk to me about the fashion trend. and oldo into a gap navy, i don't see a ton of difference in terms of what they are offering. there

for more, let's welcome emma chandra.news from walmart is easy concerns over sales numbers that we saw recently. emma: you are right. walmart came in with same stores sales beat a full percentage point above what was estimated. it has given them their 18th consecutive quarter of same-store sales growth here in the u.s. that has been fueled by their push into toys. it increased its toy offerings by 40%, really trying to take advantage of the demise of toys "r" us. walmart analysts calling it a blockbuster quarter. investors obviously like that, but they also like what you were alluding to, how the walmart figures seem to counter what we heard from the u.s. commerce department about retail sales. last week we got those delayed december retail sales numbers. that is the bottom panel. they showed december sales were down 1.2% versus november. of course, walmart, a big fourth-quarter win, suggesting what analysts were saying, that perhaps some of the counting especially online may have been off. speaking of, walmart also put i

now a look at stocks with emma chandra. what is happening in the markets? red across the screen, all major averages falling again today. this is for the third day. the s&p 500 going toward its worst weeks in september -- week since september. global stocks heading for their worst week this year. i seems that the economic growth concernst, concerns about the trade war, are really weighing on investors. and the post-christmas rally is something of a memory now for investors. take it with a what is moving. we have a number of companies moving, like expedia rising 2.3%. strong earnings, better than expected forecast. and we have some price target increases. and goodyear is a different story, down 8%. cautious on 2019 and their shares sank to the lowest since 2013. electronic arts rising 13%, its biggest gain since 2017. and investors cheering the response to legend, a really good competitor to fortnight -- fortnite. and amazon over the day or the session so far, relatively choppy as we have had headlines come out about the ceo and founder, jeff bezos. taking a

guy: emma chandra joins us now. theresa may is simply pushing the clock, and waiting for kind of a final big moment in this brexit process towards the end of march. >> that is certainly what a lot of lawmakers were saying today from several parties, including her own. certainly, there hasn't been much sign of progress, she may have gone back to brussels, she said she renegotiated the treaty, but there doesn't seem to be a huge. amount of urgency she may have slipped today, but it seems she said that she would is there should be a vote on the deal. head of business did not deny that the vote could come back after march 21, the au summit, eight days before brexit is due to happen. people have been credulous that this would go down on a midnight summit, greek-style summit, and for a while it looked like that would be the case. for example, we see germany increasingly getting involved, we see small countries, we have malta and cyprus all saying that a no-deal brexit would be catastrophic. if there will be any concession

emma chandra takes us through what to expect. revenue, notching up 512 billion dollars in sales in the past 12 months. it is more than the likes of china petroleum. more than 23% of walmart's revenue is from overseas. it has operations in 27 countries. seeing stalled sales, walmart has 17 consecutive quarters of sales growth. the holiday quarter is crucial. analysts are expecting a 3.1% exceed in if you will and foreign-exchange. it, a breakout in e-commerce sales, up 43% in the third quarter. investors expect high-growth as this part of business is not profitable. that makes operating markets another number to watch. a downward slide, walmart -- slide moment has had to spend to keep pricing competitive while facing higher expenses with rising rages and -- rising wages and freight costs. s e-commercedia' market, walmart is battling out for market shares. an update on strategy, more important. india has announced e-commerce regulations favoring home retailers. expect this on the analyst call. francine: that is emma chandra. stay w

emma chandra is here with more. is it hurting amazon? i feel like we have talked about it a lot.ped amazon. it was down 2% earlier in the session. it is paired those losses quite a lot. it has not been helping real estate stocks, though. race evening session doing poorly. look at the bottom of the screen. those two stocks are gbg smith, virginia-based stock. amazon is still going there. real estate companies in virginia doing pretty well out of the news today. about halfon is down a percent. the market overall is down. it is not clear how strategic this really was for amazon. what does amazon give up by giving this up? giving up the second headquarters in new york at code they give up being close to the rest of the financial stocks, the rest of all of those other companies that are there. in terms of how -- we have a chart that shows some of the other biggest new york-based employers. citigroup, things like that. amazon, terms of harrowing -- the stock was not doing so earlier. show e-commerce had not done well over the holiday period, which was surprising to everyone. it was sup
